Yeah, this. Only saw clips of it and kind of disliked it, but I'm amazed they're letting it end.

But yeah, I expect a ton of spinoffs and probably a reboot or sequel series.

I think they make you pick your free one before they let you start attempting the gacha though, can't remember how it went last year

Nah, it's its own "banner" that disappears once you summon on it.

I believe there are some people who still have last year's available. With that said, allegedly last year's is finally disappearing tonight and being replaced by the new one, for those who never used it.

The more practical approach is to summon in general tonight and see what you get, then take it. Or maybe wait until near the end of the banner to snag your freebie if you're super patient and plan to keep summoning. But you can take it after summoning normally if it's like it was last year.

Though, if you do plan to pull at all, it's better to try your luck in the gacha beforehand.

Unless you're a whale who won't want a neutral one, you could end up pulling the unit you planned to take as your freebie. May as well pull first, then take your free one afterwards.

That's absolutely the attitude to take.

I've written short stories with other people in mind before, which resulted in me putting a lot of pressure on myself and stressing out about writing. I didn't enjoy the process at all.

Write for yourself, and worry about other stuff once you finish. Just enjoy it as much as you can and try not to stress yourself out, because if you do, it will feel more like a chore than something you want to do.

I've written one. It was nowhere near good enough to get published, so I never bothered to try.

It took about 5 months in total, but I'd take a week or so off at a time at points and would often take time to rework plot details that I wasn't happy with. It also took a solid 3+ weeks to do editing including some pretty substantial rewrites.

As for my process, it took a long time to actually work myself up to writing at all, so it went smoothly enough once I actually started. The idea had been in my head for a few years before I really seriously considered doing it, and eventually I got a notebook and started drafting out ideas, such as character pages and a general plot outline. Eventually it consolidated into a more coherent outline and I had my chapters pretty much set up how I wanted them, so I bit the bullet and actually wrote it. Getting myself to write was definitely the most challenging aspect, as I'd tend to just not feel up to it, or second guess writing it at all, hence why I'd tend to take breaks. Whenever I was really in the zone, I'd make solid progress in longer sessions, but the most difficult aspect was definitely motivating myself to keep going and to start up each writing session.

I'm actually loosely writing a second right now, but it's been going very slowly due to a number of issues with anxiety and depression that I've been going through lately. I've only been writing very sporadically, maybe for a 30 minute session once or twice a week at most, so I haven't really made much progress (4 chapters in around 4 months). However, in terms of prewriting, I've undergone a very similar process with a lot of plotting in my head, then putting it into a notebook. I do think that getting it down on paper like that helps to keep me organized, plus it lets me gradually develop certain aspects of the story out over time as new ideas come to mind. I actually keep my notebook next to my bed and will occasionally just spend time casually drafting out new ideas, even minor things like giving minor characters backstories, even if those aren't really going to be used in the final story. It helps me get more of a handle on the characters, their motivations, etc. and makes them feel more alive.

That's really all I've got. I'm more of a short story writer than anything, and I'm really bad at it, so my advice might not be worth a ton.

IIRC they tend to have respectably long story modes.

I got one of the newer ones (4...? I think?) for $10 on sale a while back and it was fun to just mess with even though I hadn't watched the series since like, part 1. There are tons and tons of characters in some of the later ones and they tend to be really flashy.

Fun game to mess with if nothing else, especially if you have someone to play multiplayer with.

I got a few hours into it and despised it.

The combat was pretty much just "hold forward and watch", the story was nothing (IIRC when I stopped the princess was kidnapped by molemen or something? I wasn't far in at all), and most of the characters were kind of annoying.

I've considered going back to it since it's been years and I might appreciate it more, or it might pick up later. Should I?

This is only if you assume everything Tsumugi said was true. It's quite possible that she's lying.
Tell them, @dotsdfe

Yeah, there's every chance that Tsumugi wasn't telling the truth about a lot of the world and the past DRs.

The big issue is in the intro. The students are pretty clearly shocked and confused during the intro, and even if we assume that we missed a portion of the conversation where they learned they were on DR, it doesn't account for their names. Shuichi and Kaede introduce themselves by names that should have been made up before their first memory was implanted. They should have had their original names at that point. At the very least, that calls a lot of Tsumugi's story about the V3 cast's origins into question.

There's also another clue that's debated among DR fans: the audition videos. The videos that are shown in the final trial are all filmed from a similar angle and with a hardwood floor. One of the sets in Tsumugi's lab has a very similar floor, and it's speculated that Tsumugi falsified the videos there.

It all essentially hinges upon Tsumugi's cospox, but there's no reason she couldn't have applied pink body paint to herself as part of the ruse. She would have needed to throw suspicion off of herself for the entirety of the killing game since her talent could make her a suspect the entire time, so cospox could very well be fabricated as part of that.

One of the biggest themes of V3 is truth vs. lies, and to those ends, the ending is actually meant to be ambiguous. It's quite possible that Tsumugi was lying about everything, or at least most things, that get revealed during the final trial. A lot of people hate the ending because the feel like it invalidates the series, but there's a lot of room for interpretation in the ending.

I really liked GBA CoM, though it's pretty grindy. Has the closest thing to what I would consider both a good plot and story in a KH game.

Remastering it in 3D was a really dumb idea gameplay wise, but also I would argue that adding voice acting cheapened the writing.

The voice acting is really jarring. The game takes place almost immediately after KH1, but Sora's voice is way, way different in it. I actually thought they recast him at first, but nah, it was just the original VA (who I had no idea was Haley Joel Osment until like last night, wtf) going through puberty.

Really? Why?

Anyway, just read the plot. Not worth playing.

For me, it's worse because it's...just KH1's gameplay, but way more limited. It feels near-identical to KH1, except sometimes my attacks get interrupted due to the cards and I have to play around cards to attack. I feel like this type of gameplay would work in a slower game, IE, probably the GBA version, but for a game that feels so similar to 1, it's like continuing the same game but being weighed down.

Yeah, I was actually wondering about that. The collection's order has 358/2 next, but from what I've heard, it seems to be better after 2. I'll wait on that one then.

Second_Chances posted...
For the non-numbered games: Birth By Sleep is pretty much Kingdom Hearts 0. Chain of Memories and Dream Drop Distance set a lot of shit up for the games that come after them and you will likely be lost without them if you actually want to seriously follow the plot. 358/2 Days is kinda pointless and definitely not worth playing, read a summary or watch that movie or something after you finish KHII. Re:coded has awesome gameplay but the story is completely pointless.

Also the 3D version of Chain of Memories on PS2/PS3/PS4 is often considered worse than the 2D one on the GBA from a gameplay standpoint.

Hmmm...I don't think this collection has anything for DDD but I may be mistaken. Should I watch a Let's Play or something for it?

I dunno how seriously I'll take the plot, but I'm at least mildly interested in trying to follow it. I've heard it gets super convoluted as the games go on though.

Maybe I'll restart and play on easy to breeze through it.

I don't want to scrub out on it but I don't even have the card to get to the room to buy better cards and not get beaten by anything the boss throws out. Tons of grinding doesn't sound terribly appealing either.

I got 1.5 + 2.5 a while back and am finally starting on the series. Beat KH1 a few days ago and moving to Re: Chain of Memories and...I kind of hate it. Coming right off of KH1, it feels like the same game but way more limited due to the card thing.

I'm just on my first chosen world (I went for the whale to get it out of the way since it was my least favorite KH1 world), and the Parasite Cage boss is giving me hell. I start attacking it and then get beaten by 7+ cards and hit into the acid. I feel like my only actual chance of winning is to grind for a long time and maybe try to get a Moogle Shop card to buy some better cards, but I don't enjoy the game enough to want to grind.

I dunno. I kinda want to just skip it and move on to something else because I strongly dislike the battle system, but I think this is like 1 of 4 games on the collection and it seems short. Do I need this game to understand the later stuff?
