The idea behind that game always looked super cool. It's a shame that it didn't pan out.

There are definitely times when having a villain be a pure enigma can be more intimidating than humanizing them, or even where being up against a faceless or totally undefined enemy in general can be scarier than something that's known.

There's this fairly obscure movie called Don't Blink, in which people disappear from this resort when no one is looking at them directly. Well, the force behind it is never revealed at all by the end of the movie. There's no enemy to fight against or anything, or anything that anyone can do about all of this. I feel like the movie stuck with me way more due to that just due to how hopeless it all felt - not having a defined enemy actually made it scarier than if it had introduced some kind of monster or alien behind things at the last minute.

Fates has good gameplay but has absolutely nothing going for its plot, it literally didn't even try to establish lore (it's the only FE that takes place on an unknown continent, so fans mockingly call it "Fateslandia"), most of its characters are extremely flat, and it goes too hard on dating sim aspects and includes child characters for reasons that aren't justified in the plot and just feel embarrassingly tacked on (they literally throw the kids into magic portals where time moves faster and they just kind of happen to age up to the exact age that they need to be to fight in a war).

TH is a great FE game. Not perfect overall, but it's definitely one of my favorite FEs and ranks near the top of my list.

I married him on my run, though he was the only gay male marriage option at the time.

One more was added through a free update, and another is coming with the DLC in a few weeks, though.

90% verbal, occasionally physical.

Nah, I was (and still am) extremely quiet/reserved, so never really said anything.

Eventually it kind of fell off, and by senior year, I was on good terms with most of the school. Not sure if people just chilled out over time or what, but I could at least talk with a lot of the school and nobody really bullied me or anything.

A few former bullies actually friended me on Facebook and apologized a bit later on too.

Story reasons

I don't think that this is the case, unless there's someone with a really specific situation on a specific route.

Some people will leave you temporarily at the timeskip and need to be re-recruited, such as Ashe on Golden Deer if you recruit him pre-TS, who is an enemy in the volcano chapter and needs to be recruited again, but I don't think that anyone is outright a post-TS only recruitment. The TS is usually the hard cutoff for recruiting anyone, and after that you don't get another shot at it.

And to answer TC's followup question, the seconds are almost always unrecruitable. Hubert & Dedue never leave their routes, and Hilda can only be taken on specific routes.

I will say, initial horror aside, I do have some morbid fascination in the concept. It's a pretty ripe concept for a horror story, though I'd say that parasites like these and certain fungi have been influences in stuff like RE4 and TLoU.

I only skimmed the video, which was horrifying enough, but then I wiki'd it and saw that the thing compels the host to drown itself so that the worm can return to water.

Ugggggghhhhhhhh, all of my nopes on this one. I should have stayed away.

Daisy has been in mainline games too, as opposed to only spinoffs like Waluigi.

Though, both deserve more on that front. They're both pretty damn popular by now, so they should both show up in a spare mainline game or two at some point.

I have no idea what EoE or tokens are. It's been a few seasons since I've watched

Tokens are a new thing that I don't know much about, but supposedly they're a currency that can be traded or found, and the players can pool it together for stuff like shelter or food, and sometimes there are chances to buy idols and stuff with it. It sounds pretty weak to me.

EoE is Edge of Extinction. There was a whole season about it for S38, and it wasn't great. Think Redemption Island but less bad. Everyone gets a choice to go there or not after getting voted out (and everyone went), and they stay there until the merge & the final 6 or so, where everyone on the island competes in a challenge and the winner gets back in the game. It didn't turn out great honestly, especially because (season 38 spoilers if you ever plan to watch that) the third boot came back in the finale, basically swept everything, and won the season. A lot of people were super salty over that one.

I can't wait for season 40. It's a shame it's kind of twist-heavy with EoE and the tokens, but just seeing a lot of the winners again is super hype.

I do think that it should have been Edelgard (and I wish it had been Claude), but TH deserved a rep.

Similarly, Sword/Shield probably deserves a FP2 rep. They're both really big recent Nintendo releases, and I'm fine with them getting representation.

It helps that Byleth looks unique. Yeah, they wield a sword, but it's mostly in whip form, and a lot of their moves use the relics anyway. I'd be annoyed if they went with some of the FE Smash staples (please no more down B counters, Sakurai), but they didn't, so I'm content.

We're pretty overdue for a Direct in general, the last Smash DLC character is supposedly out soon, there's a mini-leak that points to a Direct soon (the next wave of Amiibos was put up for preorder super soon and they tend to announce those in Directs or in Smash stuff), and general Directs tend to be 1-2 weeks after Pokemon Directs.

Most people are expecting a Direct either this week or next.

Of those, I'd say Vesperia > Symphonia > Abyss, but all three are great.

Vesperia has a good cast and phenomenal gameplay.

Symphonia has a great cast and story, but its gameplay is a bit dated by now sadly.

Abyss is kind of in the middle, with having a solid cast/story and solid but also a bit dated gameplay. I feel bad calling it the worst, because I really really enjoy it, but I think I'm more attached to the others.

Overall for the series, I'd probably say Vesperia > Berseria > Xillia 2 > Xillia 1 > Hearts DS > Symphonia > Abyss > Innocence DS > Zestiria > Graces f > Legendia (though I only rented it for like a day and didn't get super far in at all, I just really disliked what I played of it) > Phantasia GBA > Tempest

Haven't played the others.

I like most of them, but Zestiria was highly flawed with some solid points in its favor like a great OST and an interesting world, Graces f had an atrocious cast/story and a solid gameplay system that was dragged down by everyone who wasn't Asbel being half-mage and wasting the battle system's potential, Legendia I barely touched but disliked, Phantasia GBA was a mess, and Tempest I only played a bit with my friend but barely functioned as a game.

I bought 4 for like $15 on PS4 a while back.

It's a fun mess-with-characters game to screw around with for a while. 4's roster is absolutely massive, and even as someone who hadn't kept up with Naruto in ages (stopped in filler hell in part 1, tried again with part 2 but didn't get super far into it), I had fun just seeing what everyone was like. Those games go crazy with their rosters.

It sounds like I should check out Black Mirror.

I've kind of been thinking of writing some horror stories, and I've somewhat considered trying to tackle more modern takes, but most of the examples I've seen haven't done this particularly well, so I was hoping to gather a few up.

I feel like this type of story almost always ends up being really, really tacky. The only things that come to mind offhand are Unfriended (which was cheesy and bad), and that one recent movie about the app that predicts your death and then kills you (which I never saw, but it was pretty much universally panned, plus the plot summary made it sound really lame). I couldn't really think of an example that does it particularly well.

Surely there are some movies/shows/stories in general out there that have gotten this right, right?
