Republicans messed up in letting Democrats control the narrative. Should have pushed straight repeal from the start.

I still think they would have failed, no Democrat would ever vote for a straight repeal and I doubt 50/52 Republican senators would have voted for it. There's a reason why they were more inclined to go the repeal and replace route.

theoretically, it's time they could be doing something else. Everything has an opportunity cost.
But it's improper to only consider that from one profession if you're not doing that for all

But they can’t do something else, it’s not like they can run into Starbucks and make coffee until the next caller. If they wanted to make more money then don’t become an Uber/Lyft driver.

It’s why they calculate per day or per hour and not per transaction.

Yeah, most Uber/Lyft drivers don’t make a lot of money after expenses unless they are lucky to live/work in certain cities.

Though Corrik, why should idle time be taken into account? Most people already measure per hour or per day and not per transaction.

North Korea releases imprisoned Canadian pastor

http://www.cbc.ca/news/world/canadian-pastor-released-1.4239910

North Korea has freed a Canadian pastor who was serving a life sentence of hard labour, one day after a Canadian delegation arrived to negotiate his release.

KCNA, North Korea's official news agency, said on Wednesday that Hyeon Soo Lim had been "released on sick bail… from the humanitarian viewpoint."

Sucks about the crops but its poor management. They chose to hire illegal workers probably to underpay them. It puts a strain on people trying to run their businesses fairly. You need to get rid of all the illegals to create a proper system and wages will correspond.

In Canadian (and likely American) society the general feeling is that farming is beneath them. There are farms offering double the minimum wage and yet people are not interested.

With cheaper labour in other countries farming is just not a viable business without foreign workers.

This leads to a lack of food security.

It never works that way. No matter how much you want it to.

What won’t work? There have been studies for treatment options using illegal drugs (NAOMI was a big one from a while ago) that can’t be done (because they’re still illegal), with proper safety standards drugs would be safer (you’ll get heroin instead of it laced with fentanyl) and competing with the government and other businesses would obviously mean gangs will get a smaller share of the revenue.

Drug addicts are just normal people like you and me who ended up with some problem (chronic pain, headaches, insomnia, depression, etc) and decided to self-medicate. There's absolutely no reason in my mind to dedicate less resources to them than anyone else, and maybe some reasons to dedicate more (e.g. if allocation is need-based).

Or we could all follow the teachings of Jesus who I'm pretty sure said "yeah you should just let drug users all die lmao fuck 'em" verbatim.

Modern technology likely plays a role in assorted pairing as well. Dating apps/websites lets you see more people that you would normally have not met. This can cause people to be pickier. This causes things like very attractive people or very job oriented people to be paired together.

For example, I rarely choose to match with people without at least an undergrad degree and even among people with degrees art majors are also matched less frequently. Obviously I’m missing out on potentially good matches, but if I’m not picky then I’ll be writing to/swiping people all day.

Realistically, North Korea has no chance of making a missile that could hit the U.S. mainland. So it's South Korea and/or Japan that are doomed. Possibly Hawaii.

This isn't actually true

Their second icbm test was capable of reaching the entire US aside from florida

I think he means that the missiles would likely be detected and shot down before it would reach mainland US.

Are there any studies that fentanyl is more addicted than other pain medicine? In a hospital setting it is a very effective drug to use in pain management.

Regardless the reason why fentanyl is quickly becoming the drug of choice (either alone or to spike other drugs) is because you need so little of it, making it easier to traffic.

You are correct, Mexico isn't very welcoming, but that doesn't change that it is increasingly becoming a better place to immigrate to.

Of course if the US decides to tank the Mexican economy with tariffs we could see more of those people immigrating to the US again.

Republicans on the right (though not "far-right") will be more likely to support it if it looks like the bill may go too far to the left in its search for 50-51 votes.

Obviously someone like Rand Paul or Ted Cruz would never support it, but if the option was to agree to a bill you are a slight no to or risk allowing the bill to move to the left you may be convinced to agree to it.

He was technically the last person out of the primaries, but was he ever getting more than 10% or 15%? He only won his state too.

Totally rooting for him -- he was the GOP's best chance to get my vote and he probably could have gotten it against Hillary -- but I've yet to see with confidence that the party wants him as their leader.

Kasich finished 3rd by popular vote with 13.8% and fourth in delegate count (lost to Rubio). Even when it became a three person race Kasich only defeated Cruz in the northeastern states where he was weakest and Trump was easily breaking 50% at this time
