This is of no benefit for things like mice or keyboards, of which there are probably hundreds of millions of functioning USB A devices out there, and are still widely sold with USB A.

The MacBook design also took out ports that weren't traditionally USB, like Ethernet and monitor ports. Although my newerish one did put in an HDMI, in contrast to one I used years ago that was only USB C. And again, this was like a 2015 laptop but they are still making USB A stuff today

I just got a Microsoft Surface Laptop Studio at work and it only has 2 USB-C ports, a headphone jack, and Microsoft's proprietary Surface Connect port. If you want Ethernet or USB-A, you need a dock. You want to connect a monitor? Too bad, even the dock doesn't have any video ports, you have to buy a USB-C adapter.

Luckily our old Dell D6000 docks work just fine through the USB port and they support 3 monitors at once (two DP and 1 HDMI).

Yeah, I love the Dell Command|Update app. It doesn't even require admin privileges so if a user is having a problem, I just instruct them to run the app and I don't even have to connect to their machine.

Dell's also really good about updating their drivers. I've gotten firmware updates on systems that were 5 years old.

Do true viruses still exist? That is, small programs which spread by infecting other programs.

See, I name all my computers and stuff after rodents, so my first WiFi system was FlyingSquirrel. Then I got a little portable 3G router and that became MiniSquirrel. And then I got a larger 3G router but I wanted it to stay separate from the other WiFi system, so it became MegaSquirrel. Eventually I phased out the old 802.11b access point and converted the router to be just an access point, but I kept the name. And since everything I have uses MegaSquirrel and it would be a pain in the butt to change 50 or 60 devices, it's sort of stuck with that name, even after replacing the APs a couple times.

You can also eliminate many ads by using AdGuard public DNS. Just change your DNS settings to 94.140.14.14 and 94.140.15.15. If you can use IPv6, the addresses are 2a10:50c0::ad1:ff and 2a10:50c0::ad2:ff. You can enter these settings into your computer or you can protect your entire network by adding them to your router.

If you have an Android device you can go into the Private DNS settings and enter dns.adguard-dns.com This will allow you to block ads even over cellular where you usually can't change your DNS settings.

This isn't as effective as a dedicated ad blocker in your browser, and it won't do anything for YouTube, but it can block ads in many apps, and it works on almost any device that allows you to change your DNS settings.

Get a UPS. Doesn't really need to be a big fancy one, even a smaller model will do. It'll also keep your PS5 from crashing if the power blinks out for a moment.

Amazon has a 425VA APC UPS for $61, and an Amazon Basics 600VA UPS for $59.

Or ask your employer if they have any old UPSes they're getting rid of. Most of them can be refurbished by replacing the battery and you don't need to buy the brand-name replacement battery pack, you can rebuild the old pack using standard SLAs that cost about $15-30 each.
