The 2 is a coefficient of (1+2). That takes precedent over being divided into 6. People who think the answer's 9 probably also think haikus require a specific number of syllables, and different parts of the tongue are designated to taste sweet, sour, bitter, and salty.

You do what is inside the parentheses first, before you multiply 2 to all the numbers in the parentheses. There is no coefficient because there is no variable.

Sorry I forgot the second half of my post. You do what is in the parentheses. Then you divide 6 by 2. You don't distribute 2 to the parentheses because there is no variable in them.

PEMDAS is just some over simplified garbage little kids are taught in school, no different than the haiku example I brought up, or when bad English teachers tell their students not to start sentences with conjunctions. 6/2(3) is not the same as 6/2*3. Some spacing might help. 6 / 2(3). Is not the same as 6 / 2 * 3.

I never heard of PEMDAS until years after I graduated on this very web site. Sounds like a very poor teaching tool that taught students that multiplication/division and addition/subtraction are not equal operations when they are.

As a math teacher who uses PEMDAS as a reference I also teach that MD and AS are equal and you carry them out going from left to right instead of M before D or A before S.
