Ah man, the Germs. They aren't my favorite but they are fun.

As somebody who mainly grew up with whatever was on the radio(until i determined the radio punk rock was what I liked and then went down a hole i am still in today), I had a hard time processing the song "Forming" as a teen. Not just the way it was crafted, the production work.

Which brings me to something I care about a lot, in the sense I am a listener who has never been in a studio: production.

It can ruin albums. I was reading a comment on the infamous 2013 album What the...? by Black Flag I thought was boneheaded. They couldn't grasp why so many people cared about the production on a punk album. The prodction on this album is what makes this shit go from forgettable to something you'll never forget. The production on this album is totally off and makes it almost unlistenable, before you can even get to Greg Ginn playing Theramin. A lot of classic punk production is kinda minimalist, but it isn't invasive either. It kinda lets the music speak for itself in some ways because you need to listen in a little harder than other types of music.

So, as a kid, it took me a while to grasp it. When I first got in to Bad Religion I really only cared for the 2000s until I got into the sound from the 80s and early 90s. Now, I definitely prefer stuff that is under produced. Growing up listening to top 40 stuff almost ruined my taste, because I had never heard anything recorded like some 70s and 80s punk before.

2013 Rios|Lew $1 FRN with the serial number B02416510* printed at the Fort Worth facility.

This one, to be exact

http://www.mycurrencycollection.com/reference/star-notes/lookup/1/2013/B02416510*

So, as we can see, this is a star note. But, it isn't rare at 3.2 million. I have literally hundreds of these in my collection.

What gives?

Well, for the 2013 B(New York Bank) they printed some star notes at both their Washington, D.C. facility and the their Fort Worth facility. Somehow, they messed up and printed some serial numbers at both places, creating two identical notes.

The way serial numbers work within a series(ex: 2001, 2003, 2003a, 2006, 2009, 2013, 2017, 2017A) is that the first letter is the bank designation, in this case "B" for New York. There are then eight digits ranging from 00000001 to 99999999(roughly), and then either the suffix or a star. The suffix starts at "A" and when 99 million notes are printed it switches to "B" and then on and on all the way to "X". If it has a star instead of a letter, it is a star replacement note of one originally damaged in production. It can have the same serial number as another note, but it will be differentiated because it has no letter, but there are no duplicates of these numbers with a *, ever. So there can be a B02426510 A, B, C, etc and a *, but never two B02426510 *s out there. Such as no two will have A or B at the end either.

But, some have gotten out. On every dollar bill there are 4 of the same digits in a rectangle pattern, in this case 2 for New York. Next to each set is a small FW or another letter, indicating where it was printed at. FW is fort worth and anything else is DC. That will be the main difference on these notes outside of printing plate number and position. I don't know how but there are exact duplicates of some of these 2013 series star notes. I believe this was a more recent discovery in American numismatics. I have around 240 2013 $1 star notes in my collection, many of which come from New York. The ones from DC are from a 250,000 print run, and the ones from Fort Worth are from a 3.2 million print run, so 250,000 will match up.

The interesting thing is, of course, having one note is worth one dollar but if you found its duplicate? thousands.

Well folks, im checking my stack here. I doubt I have any matches but if I do....

ya'll know i'm gonna love it.

If you mean the blue hands Jazzmaster I posted earlier:

I saw it on a website for 450. lowest price around. When I decided to return the Tissot I went to buy it and they had sold out, and I couldn't find it at that price point anywhere else on the internet just about. So, since I had my heart now set on a Jazzmaster Viewmatic, I searched for a nice one around the 450 range( 500+ is the avg price for this style Viewmatic), and this is the best I could do.

But, while the blue hands were snazzy, this one is also very tight. That picture in that link had me worried. I do not care too much for that style of blue. But then I saw this video of one being held, and the color looked almost purple, so I was sold, and also tired of watch searching.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qjVuy6sWM7g

So that color is also deceiving. The real answer to the dial color is some of the stock photo and some of this video. in the right light it does look a little purple.

That is a nice looking watch. I saw some watches in my search where they had the big minute markers like that, but I went with something a little more traditional

Anyways, I bought this one, from a different site for a little less money

https://www.jomashop.com/hamilton-jazzmaster-viewmatic-automatic-blue-dial-mens-watch-h32515145.html

I like it so far. I am going to take it to a place to remove some links from the watch band, because I am not experienced with it and despite watching a video that made it seem super easy(Hamiltons have a slightly different link setup) I tried and decided to stop because it wasnt going as smoothly for me.

I decided to return the Tissot and I did buy a Hamilton jazzmaster.

Maybe it isn't defective, but when turning the hands the date would change around 10:10, and while I didn't track wearing it exactly I know I checked at 11:30 pm one day and the date had changed.

This hamilton, when setting, the date switches over almost exactly at midnight. I'll see in a little if the date does change at midnight or before(just got it today). Though this is talking about moving the hands and not using the quick date feature that just cycles through the numbers. I don't know if it makes a difference but one video I watched the guy said he will quick change the date(outside of the danger zone of 9PM-2AM or so) to the day before, then turn the hands to set it and have it advance one day that way. So, thats why rather than using the quick change I am just turning the hands.

Maybe there was no defect with the Tissot and I am just inexperienced with automatic watches. But I noticed the date had switched at 11:30(not sure when it actually did change) one night, and even if it isn't defective I don't particularly want something that inaccurate.

One of my favorite parts in all of video games is when you try to assassinate the sorceress. It feels super exciting. The problem is, if they had kept Edea as your villian, it would have been better, because she was a cool villain. I live near Pittsburgh and I was going to say the Pierogie but it may not be as local as I thought, since apparently there is a Pierogie festival in Indiana, and of course as we know people like 'em in Philly(yes yes sunny wife restaurant spelled wrong guhh). However at Pittsburgh Pirates home games there is a Pierogie race, which is kinda interesting.

I guess a true local delicacy is a Primanti Brothers sandwich, since it was created here. It is a sandwich on thick bread with basically any meat you choose topped with french fries and coleslaw. I like 'em.

One problem I am having with this Tissot but maybe this isn't a problem and just how autos work(or some autos).

I noticed when I was setting the time/date the date changes over before midnight. Last night at 11:30 it read 10, when it was still the 9th, but I couldn't confirm when it switched over.

Either autos tend to report the new day a little early or this is a defect. I am not super well versed in automatics to say.

I just set the time/date again now that I am outside of the danger zone(9PM-2AM or something it is recommended to not set the date as it can mess up the watch) and the date switches at 10:15 "pm"(in quotes since this watch doesnt have a concept of AM/PM necessarily)...not anywhere close to midnight.

My thoughts halfway through the first season: animation not nearly as bad as I remember(though Homer looks off and his voice is a little weird here), and while not every episode is great, there is a lot of well written humour to be found. Before this deep dive I always remembered the first season as being poorly drawn and forgettable, and I feel like I was flat out wrong.

Okay so in today's episode of "the wheels keep on turning" ....

I got the Tissot in the mail today, and I wanted to return it, but I opened the box first to look at it and it looks so good in person...I kinda want to keep it, and later on buy a cheaper automatic that has the features I want(or save up a chunk and get something like the Jazzmaster above). But I also feel like this may be a consequence of having it in front of me.

If I could wear it to work once and get my fun out of it, I think I'd be satisfied enough to return it only because I am itching to wear something new. But I don't want to wear it with all the plastic film and tags still on it. Cannot remove(tags at least) if I want to return...

Okay, lets do this again. I now think I have actually found THE watch.

I am likely going to return the one in the OP, though I haven't gotten it yet. It looks sweet but I need something functional.

I've been trying like hell to find a watch that checks off all the boxes I have, and this one just about does it

The Hamilton Jazzmaster Viewmatic.

http://dvciknd2kslsk.cloudfront.net/images/watchfinderimages/Watch/Hamilton/Jazzmaster/45097-2008679217.jpg

It checks off the most boxes, with some things as an added bonus

automatic
some numbers on dial
date
seconds hand(rather than seconds subdial)
minute indicators(60 at 12, 5 at 1, etc)

then it has snazzy blue hands and like, i'm sold!

this is going to be more than I wanted to spend, but that is okay, because I am getting an actual, useable piece of technology. The one in the OP looks very nice, but I can't really use it while working.

One of my hobbies is using my Hoya r72 infrared filter to take photos with my dslr. Now, a brief summary of daytime IR shooting is that with just a filter like mine you need long ass exposures. I choose 30 seconds most of the time, depending on settings, even in extreme sunlight. The photos show up some shade of red or pink depending on shutter times, which looks neat. You can then go into photoshop and edit the photos to look otherworldly(mainly swapping color channels so red is blue and vice-versa), but on its own this is still a kind of interesting technique to use.

Anyways, I got me a shutter timer recently, so I can do long ass exposures, so I was curious to see what happens at night if I went beyond my cameras max of 30 seconds and into "bulb" mode where i could go on for minutes or hours.

What I discovered at night was actually pretty interesting. The only thing you really see is various lights that produce IR, such as most, but not all, of my neighbors Christmas lights. So you see the lights kind of in a dark vaccum, as well as their immediate surroundings. Everything else is black or slightly tinted. Here are two examples I think look pretty nice. Both were 1.5-2 hours.

https://imgur.com/JFxCsno

https://imgur.com/C8KSti1

Both of these were looking out of my house, one in my driveway and th other my porch. In the second photo there is a tiny dot pattern of lights in the up some from the house. That is a mansion on a hill.

So, I have a new angle and a new direction to see what I can pick up, and I'm going for two hours, so we'll see in 1 hour and 20 minutes.

Ultimately, the return should be free or cheap(just a small P+H fee) so I'm going to see if I like the one in the OP when it gets here and if not i'll send it back.

The problem is, there are thousands of watches, but the more traditional looking ones I like all had something off about them. Like, I like the look of the quartz tissot visodates better than the autos, but I want an auto, and a lot of ones that nailed their design were outside of my price range.

my theory about collections is that as a cashier, where most of my finds have come from, if somebody willingly pays with something I take it as currency, tender it, and later buy it out of the drawer for face value. I have no obligation to tell them the value of it, and I cannot assume it was stolen from a collection.

But in cases like this topic here, I won't bullshit people. PK is asking for information and I gave him Britannica. If I felt his coin was worth big bucks I wouldn't lie about it. Similarly to being a cashier, say I notice something older or rare in somebodies wallet as they pay. They didn't willingly give it up, so I would never ask to see it, say its worth face value and ask them to trade it. I would start a conversation and talk about it with them.

When I worked for a liquor store, a young woman used a $100 bill from the 1970s to buy booze. Obviously taken from a collection.

I don't know how much US banknote design changes (not much I imagine), but Canadian banknotes get completely redesigned every decade. I had to call a manager over before I accepted it.

Banknotes change design whenever the BEP feels like it, there is no set schedule. The one dollar bill has not been redesigned since series 1963, the modern $100 dates to series 2009, things like that. For the vast majority of the 1900s, federal reserve notes had their distinct look, such as

https://www.silverrecyclers.com/uploads/blog-images/1990-series-100-dollar-bill.jpg

For small size bills it goes: series 1928 design, with some alterations and additions used up until the 1990s, then they had a few design changes before they went colorful in the mid 2000s.

the value almost solely hinges on the grade it would recieve by a company like PCGS, but sending off coins isn't cheap, so if you send one off and it doesnt grade high enough to make it worth it(based on population reports) you just threw your money away. So, before you get a coin professionally graded you have to be an amatuer grader yourself with at least a 10x scope, because you need to be very confident you can get a super high grade before you send it in or else you're gonna guess and guess wrong.

The best way to tell if it is fake is to get a weed scale(come on, I use mine for coins once in a while but YANNO) and weigh it. If it is 3.11 grams +/- a a small tolerance for wear and tear, and it's real. If it weighs something super off, it's likely fake.

That looks like a real, authentic 1964 penny that was likely well preserved in a collection and released from it at some point(its a nice 1964 penny but it isn't like the grandkids spent a fortune for a cent)

I've seen some 1960s cents with original lustre, and I own a few I have poached from circulation and they look similar. Pennies in circulation do tend to change color, but well preserved you can have the original lustre show. I have seen two wheat cents(1958 last year of issue) with some levels of original, golden lustre. They exist, and I got 'em both retail.

Now, common coins and years(such as a 1964 cent) can be worth money, but they need to grade extremely high. There is a 70 point scale, and while this one looks nice, i don't see anything to think this is a super high grade(though I am inexperienced with coin grading).

If we take a look at the PCGS pop report(Professional Coin Grading Service population report)

https://www.pcgs.com/coinfacts/coin/1964-1c-rd/2890

For pennies, they have categories based on their patina. Red, Red-brown and brown. This is classified as red, and important to note, there is no mint mark so it is a Philadelphia cent.

https://www.pcgs.com/coinfacts/coin/1964-1c-rd/2890

So, looking here, the premium prices start at MS65(Mint State 65/70)...if you had one that graded MS67 or better yet 67+(2/2.5 points higher) it would sell for considerably more. Why? 500+ 1964 Philadelphia Red patina cents have been submitted and graded at MS65 by PCGS. The highest 1964 red cent graded by PCGS was a 67+, and there has only been one to attain that high a grade. at 67, there are 14. This also doesnt account for grades by any other authenticating service. PCGS is one of the top companies.

This coin looks nice, but I'd say it isn't one of those ultra premium grades.

But yeah, in short(...) it just looks like a reall nice 1964 penny from somebodies collection. The figure of $2, if you can find a buyer, might be accurate.

All of this hinges on the fact I am not super well versed in coin grades.

I haven't bought a watch in a long while, so i'm kinda out of the game(some people have me tagged to this day as watch guy. for me it was more of a fad, but I still love watches, but when I buy one now it'll be a serious thing and not just yet another cheaper casio digital watch "just to have")
TopicOkay I think I have found THE watch

I...can't pull the trigger on it. Why? I love the design, but it looks like it may be a little bigger than what I wanted, and it could easily get caught on stuff if i wore it to work, and i go to maybe 1-2 dress occasions a year honestly.

That and since this is a belated christmas gift, my mom just gave me her gift limit $ to spend on a watch, so since it isn't a gift in the traditional sense I am realizing this may not make smart financial sense seeing the money come out of my bank account(even if it was her money i put in there for the purchase).

sigh.... i don't know.

What worries me is how oblivious I would have been as a kid to any of this. I don't know if I would have been the kind of kid to stop a grown ups advances, because I wouldn't even interpret them as such(or even weird) until I was like into my 10s or early teens. But I also fear I wouldn't have had the courage, or whatever you call it, to tell anybody about it were such an event to happen.

I am thankful nobody in my family or anybody else abused me in any way as a kid, but it just seems like if there was somebody, they could have gotten me and I wouldn't have known anything about anything.

I think I have a grasp on how to do it, I just need #0000 steel wool, or at least thats what was reccomended, to get some dirt and grime off.

My furnace shuts off and then doesn't turn itself back on until the temperature has dipped several degrees below the target, and I had this issue once before and a guy came to fix it(covered under warranty) and told me a sensor was dirty and it worked like new after until recently.

I have located it and everything, so all I need to do is get the wool and get to cleaning. Oh and I also need a 1/4th hex screwdriver for the bolt securing it into place, which I dont know if I have, but I will buy one too.

My question for anybody that knows, do I NEED to kill the power from my circuit breaker to the furnace room? I was inspecting it last night and I turned the thermostat off, the outside on/off switch(I click once to "restart" the furnace when it isn't firing properly), and the on off switch behind the furnace cover.

Every christmas there is at least one bad buy of a gift set or somethingorother that nobody buys in the state of pennsylvania and the plcb. Oftentimes it doesn't even make sense, in this case it kind of didn't.

three bottles in a humidor accommodating them. Craigellachie 13, Dewar's 12, and Aberfeldy 12 scotch.

The cost was the same as the three bottles combined. The humidor was 100% free. One person bought one but then also returned it the next day.

I guess people either didn't realize the humidor was free, OR nobody really wanted to commit to Dewar's, Aberfeldy, and Craigellachie in the same trip to the store. Anyways, we sold zero of them, so eventually we were told to break down the gift sets and sell the normal bottles. So, like yeah.

I don't even know if this works. But who needs a humidor this big? You could fit like 500 cigars in here. I keep my snuff in it...
