I'm not a historian but the great depression seems worse than this. Not only did a lot of people lose jobs, but the people who kept their jobs saw their salaries drop significantly. The number of unemployed people in coronavirus is higher, but that is mostly because America has three times as many people today compared to back then. The rate of unemployment in the GD was one out of four, and it's only that high today in some states.

The govt offers boosted unemployment pay to the point where you can make more money that way than you used to with your job, and many people have been easily able to shift to a work-from-home role at their job. The govt also sent 1200 to people making less than 75K and is in talks to do it again but who knows if that'll happen.

Great depression had long lines of people just waiting to get food rations, and half the country's banks failed, and it lasted for years on end.

Then again, a lot of businesses have closed because of corona. But to me I still think the GD was harsher.

I've seen far worse on certain subreddits. Like, literally watch a dude's head explode from a close-range shotgun blast worse.

I've also seen more violent murders than this.

But this one is INFURIATING

-A man in a position of power
-Who is supposed to uphold order and people's rights
-Holding weapons and backed by other officers
-Abusing the power dynamics of racism
-Attacking a man who wasn't fighting back
-Going far beyond reasonable restraint
-Ignoring the man's begging for air and even for his mother
-Seeming to enjoy it
-Ignoring the onlookers desperately urging him to let him breathe
-Other cops defend him and attack the onlookers when they push Chauvin to stop
-Hearing the man's begging for life draining away slowly until he's sputtering and then dead
-Killing him SLOWLY for 10+ minutes. He had so much time to consider what he was doing and to let him breathe. It wasn't a split-second gunshot. This is what gets me the most. Watching the video I kept wanting somebody to run over and KICK him off of floyd. He had time to reflect on what he was doing. He chose to keep pushing his knee.
-The damn insouciant way he walked away from it. No apparent remorse. I felt worse about killing a cockroach today than he did about killing Floyd
-Knowing that it happened following a string of similar incidents and the police just don't give a damn
-Knowing that police around the world have been attacking and even killing people peacefully protesting.
-Knowing the circumstances that have led to this, and the hurtful things people around the world (and people IN POWER) have said
-Coming fresh off of not just the other cop killings of black people but also Amy Cooper weaponizing racism against an innocent black person
-The idea that if it hadn't been filmed, he would have gotten away with it!!!
-Knowing that it took THIS big of an outcry for him and the others to be taken into custody and charged.

That's why this video gets me angrier than a video of a drug cartel brutalizing somebody.

That subreddit has been closed for like three months now.

Admins fired the moderators of the subreddit and told them to find new ones that fit certain criteria. The remaining moderators apparently couldn't find new ones they were happy with, and instead moved the community to another website altogether so they don't have to deal with reddit's policies. Their new website is active, but far less than the actual subreddit used to be.

Its posts get like 2000 to 3000 upvotes compared to before when they were getting upward of 15K upvotes.

It shows up in google results if you search george floyd full video and lasts ten minutes. You can hear the onlookers castigating the officers and Floyd gradually losing his life, but the officers don't seem to care even after they have killed him

He didn't care about Floyd's life and was clearly enjoying the thrill of the power and the harm he was doing to him. Indulging his sadism.

He might not have been consciously thinking it, but he viewed Floyd as just an object for him to do what he wanted with. "I want to squish this guy, and I'm confident I can get away with it." Must have had a rush of dopamine from the sense of power he was exerting. Especially for him to keep going even when Floyd had stopped breathing and resisting (and begging).

Bigotry appeals to the tribalistic parts of our brains.

The people who are different can be stigmatized. We can justify it by claiming they're inferior or depraved. That's what colonizers did. They didn't really see Africans as people like them, they just saw people it'd be easy to seize. Land for the taking, it's the white man's burden.

Black people were systematically stigmatized legally and socially for centuries. Through a concerted effort. "We have a good thing going"

Slavery was practiced less than six generations ago, and segregation was only two generations ago. The racism that drove these things didn't just evaporate when the laws changed. It still gets passed along, including today.

How many generations does it take to wash away the bigotry that was given many generations of time to take root? Definitely a long time. We can pass laws that try to treat people equally, but that doesn't fix the racist attitudes just like that. Whether some people realize it or not, it's still festering. It shows up in police most noticeably.

Racist people aren't reflecting on the questions you're asking. In general, they aren't pausing to consider that black people didn't agree to be in this position. You're black in America, so you kind of have to do this introspection. But they don't--they don't have to really think about the consequences of what they say and do. (And they don't want to think about it)

2020 is the first year I've seen where the people saying "this year SUCKS" have been unequivocally right. The year started off badly and then nosedived. And we haven't even gotten into the meat of what's going to be an especially acrid election.

2020 ACTUALLY sucks, not because a bunch of celebrities died but because there's been so much ecological destruction, civil unrest, social injustice, political acrimony, and fear and panic.

Not me but my dad and his friend. A police officer was upset they were standing on a street and told them to get off. I guess he did it in an abrasive way because my dad's friend retorted at the officer. The officer was upset and either ticketed or arrested my dad's friend, idk. My dad and his other friend were meant to be witnesses for the court case. The officer lied to my dad and his other friend, saying he'd decided not to go with the charges. To get my dad to not worry about being a witness.

The judge believed my dad's friend in the end, luckily.

My job at my grocery store is checking people for masks. Some people get so goddamn snobby and rude about it. I've literally had a person hold his hand up to my face as he walked by, saying "NO. NO. stop. no. NO" because I was telling him he should be wearing a mask. People get PISSED over such a mild inconvenience. Homeless people and old people in general get the snottiest about it. On the other side, I've never once seen an east asian person try to come in my store without wearing a mask.

Oh and also I've seen guys come out of the bathroom after shitting without even washing their hands. Fucking gross.

Oh please. It's not always a matter of opinion that causes conflict between users. There are genuine trolls and hateful/aggressive people and I happily block them so they don't intrude on my topics with their stupidity. It has enhanced my time here significantly. You do you though, enjoy all the trolls.

And btw you actually can remove people from your life IRL, and it's also a good thing to do if somebody is being toxic to you.

I saw it on sale for $9 at walmart.com and was considering buying one. But the only one I would be interested in is the VR one. So I abstained.

That said, I don't think we're in the target age group for labo. It was clearly made mainly for kids. Also of course the argument "why's it so expensive, it's just cardboard!" is basically the same as "why is a game so expensive, it's just a few gigs of data on a cartridge!"
