Uptown Funk bothers me because it seems like it's trying too hard to be good, and don't get me wrong I like the "don't believe me just watch" part but it's like they put all of the eggs into the basket for that song, if that makes sense. Maybe I just hate it because it's popular but maybe someone else knows what I mean

I loved it at first, but for some reason I got tired of it sooooo quickly even though I think it's a good song. And I never listen to the radio, so it's not because I was overexposed to it against my will...

TopicIs the weapon breaking mechanic in Zelda:BOTW really that annoying?
Wetterdew
01/28/18 6:25:43 PM
#21
It's not bad at all, I actually enjoy it.

1. Unbreakable weapons would have been really broken in a game like BOTW, because you'd be able to go right to Hyrule Castle at the start of the game and get the best weapons to use for the entire game, breaking the game difficulty completely.

2. If they didn't break, there would probably be much less variety in the weapons you could find since the developers know nobody would use any of the weaker weapons at all.

3. Because they're so throwaway, it means you can use them in ways you wouldn't if you planned on keeping them forever. Like throwing them, or using Magnesis with them to pop balloons and then tossing them. Sometimes your weapon falls off a cliff or something. But it's not so bad since they're disposable anyway.

4. It is part of the theme of the game, which is living on the land. You wake up in the wild and your only real possessions are the clothes on your body (which you don't even have at first) and the Sheikah slate. Everything Link uses in his quest, he finds in the wild.

5. Weapons are easy to find.

The only problem with the system is how you pause the game all the time to change weapons. But I don't mind.

this is the only part I hate. I don't care if you are gay or trans or whatever. but little kids that haven't even hit puberty are just kids, nothing more. parents that try to claim their kids are gay or trans should be put in prison

Considering that gender identity forms around the ages 3-5 or so, puberty isn't needed as marker for "oh well I guess they're allowed to decide if they're trans or not." The actual transitioning isn't happening until they're much older anyways.

Honestly I've been having gay thoughts since I was 3. If somebody had explained to me what straight and gay were, I would have been able to know I was gay as a kid. And most people I've spoken with about this say they also had sexual feelings as a kid.

Honestly, it's likely because of the multiple genders thing and forcing children to be transgender that has annoyed a lot of people.

What happened to LGBT advocacy groups is what happens to most civil rights groups. After the major war is won (in this case, marriage) instead of laying down their arms and retiring to the countryside, they look for newer, much lesser battles to fight in order to stay relevant. And these "battles" are inconsequential and incredibly irrelevant to the majority public so this causes them to lose a lot of the goodwill they earned.

Pretty uninformed comment. Just because marriage was legalized doesn't mean it's "time to lay down their arms and retire to the countryside." LGBT people are still not protected the way other groups are when it comes to workplace and housing discrimination, and that's just two examples.

Topicis Christianity the reason why the right is so anti-intellectual?
Wetterdew
01/23/18 2:46:27 AM

The far right is definitely more anti-intellectual than other people, that much is true.

I think it's mostly due to their reluctance to deal with modern colleges, whose environments are generally left-leaning. There are conservative colleges, but they aren't the most prestigious ones. So why is college so left-leaning? I guess that's a good question, and you can probably find some good articles about it online. I think it could be answered by looking at the historical role of college in society, and how it changed in the mid-20th century. And also consider that most college students are very young, which correlates with left-leaning politics.

So a lot of conservatives resent higher education as a result.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anti-intellectualism#Academic_anti-intellectualism

This wikipedia article is interesting, and it seems to paint anti intellectualism as mostly a trend driven by sociopolitical currents.

But I think religion plays a part in it as well. IMO it's because Christianity (and most religions) tries to foist their holy book on you to answer questions you would be pondering. It's much easier to say "it's all part of god's plan" than it is to try to explain why things happen.

I'm sure it was crinkly and weird, but given how rude people think it is to ask a woman if she's pregnant, she got away with it.

I used to watch Zinnia's videos on youtube like 8 or 9 years ago. She had some smart things to say but IDK what she's like today. Based on her tweets it sounds like she isn't claiming men don't have the right to refuse trans partners. It sounds like she's saying she thinks it shouldn't really be an issue for most men ideally, but they still have the right to refuse if they want. Entitled, maybe. To me it just sounds like she's saying how she wishes it were, rather than demanding men accept trans people or claiming they don't have the right not to.

In any case, I'd definitely rather hear her post her full opinion on the issue rather than read what the editor of right-mind.us or unabashedconservative.com claims she is saying about it based on a short tweet, and dishonestly claiming she thinks men don't have the right to refuse. Because the article you linked to is written like shit.

Cardboard boxes

It's papercraft that you fold and arrange to make cardboard contraptions that you use to interact with your switch. They also engineered moving parts using things like rubber bands. In some of them, you place the joy con in the papercraft, and it's able to register that you're manipulating the contraption (cardboard piano keys being pressed for one of them) by seeing movement using the IR camera. This can be used to control what's happening in the game.

It's like a toy for kids, really. I can see a lot of kids enjoying it.

There's a context for everything. Calling your server at Denny's "sweetheart" is one thing, but calling a colleague "sweetheart" in a professional setting is grossly inappropriate.

Exactly. Context matters. Most of the time, it's used condescendingly against women, backed with sharp misogynist undertones. The kind of sentiment that isolates and beleaguers. There are also times like you described where it's just used innocently. In the army, it's not appropriate, and the fact that other employees corroborated the account that the man used it to demean her along with sarcasm and condescension makes me believe he wasn't innocent.

People who use sexist language to demean their coworkers shouldn't be promoted.
