The only one of those that might breach the top ten is Mega Man X, which looked not THAT much stronger than pre-leak TLoU. And MMX is the seventh strongest SNES game no? And Oracle of Ages? Come on.

Also 2019 RE2>1998 RE2, and that game still lost to possibly the weakest division winner.

Mega Man X got almost 45% on FFX.

Did you see how Samus performed in the last Character Battle? Or Super Metroid blowing out Galaxy before almost defeating a genuinely strong ZELDA game in the Best Game Ever contest? Metroid is very legit on this site, despite the lack of strong new games.

This was before people realized a poor man's kirby platforming mode with moon gravity and cutscenes that consist of (Nintendo characters stare at each other, nod, rush forward toward the enemy) isn't actually fun or well designed, and before people realized Brawl has bottom of the barrel, extremely unfun gameplay outside of the one terrible mode people cite as its sole redeeming feature, with some gameplay features literally just included to spit on the competitive community since Sakurai was mad that a game where you fight other people until a winner emerges evolved a competitive scene.

Spitting on the Melee community is an improvement on how the Melee community treats itself, to be fair.

Just look at when Pikachu went from 'murdered by Fox' to 'beating Tidus' and he's only been rising from there.

What's so bad about several Fire Emblem characters making it to Smash? Doesn't that game have like a million characters? I'm sure there's plenty of room. Plus FE has LOTS of characters, so it's not like it doesn't proportionately fit.

My point with Byleth is the timing.

If Byleth was just announced as DLC, fine.

But Byleth was the final secret character in a DLC pack of all third-party entrants, all from series that beforehand had no Smash representation, that most people who cared about that spot already owned, and it was a hyped up spot. Could it be Dante? Could it be Master Chief?

It was, from a 'this is exciting and cool' spot, the worst place for MORE FIRE EMBLEM. A comparison would be Metroid Prime Pinball vs. Metroid Federation Force. Doing a silly little sidegame when Metroid is getting plenty of actual Metroid games? A neat little game that has Metroid in the title. Doing it when people are worried if the series is dead coming off Other M? Completely different in terms of how it will be accepted.

Neutral voters who like GTAV or Person 4 Golden but don't care about the other match are forced to vote in Xenoblade/Fire Emblem. The Byleth reveal gives those neutrals a strong reason to support not-Fire Emblem.
