Chad Stricker, of Pearl River County, Miss., spent days searching for his 10-month-old wolfdog named Nymeria when he found the typed note, along with her collar, in his mailbox. He shared a picture of the note and collar on Facebook in a now-viral post. Im sorry to inform you that your dog was shot and killed Saturday night while digging through my garbage, the note said. It did not suffer and I did not take pleasure in killing it. There is a county leash law which you should abide by so that I do not have to kill any more of your pets. I was sick to my stomach, he told the Biloxi Sun Herald. To think that someone killed her while we had been out looking for her, for digging in the garbage ... An animal is not worth more than your trash or the time to make a phone call? Nymerias large yellow collar had an attached tag that showed her photo and description of her personality, along with Strickers address and phone number, the paper reported. Stricker described Nymeria as one of the sweetest dogs anywhere around and very loving in his post. However, he told the paper that there was nothing he or police could do because Nymeria had been off her leash while on another persons property. The leash law in Pearl River County requires all animals to be fenced in or restrained on a leash, or otherwise be considered a public nuisance, according to the outlet. Shooting a so-called nuisance animal isnt uncommon, Elizabeth Treadaway, the shelter manager Pearl River County SPCA, told the paper. Unfortunately we see that a lot, Treadaway said. This dog lost its life over an invisible line it cant see. As soon as an animal goes onto someone elses property, that leash law goes into effect. But just because its law, doesnt make it right what this person did. Stricker wrote a lengthy note of his own to the anonymous coward who claimed to have shot the dog. Its sad to think I have a neighbor of your moral character living so close to me that would do this, it read in part. Do I hate you, no, I pity the person you are and those who have to tolerate you. Stricker said Nymerias body wasnt returned to him. He asked to be told where the body was or for it to be left on his driveway so he could give his beloved dog a proper burial. I pray one day you come to realize what you have done and teach those in your household to be better, he wrote. Because many veterans live alone without family or friends nearby, they can often become isolated and lonely from the lack of connection. As some veterans also suffer with post traumatic stress disorder, their social interactions can also become difficult. Thats when the Vet Friends Foundation can step in with a helping hand. The organization delivers companionship to both the vets and the senior shelter dogs who need caring homes to live out the rest of their lives. Joel Rockey, the Foundations founder, says that he came up with the idea for the organization after spending five years in the Navy in Iraq and Afghanistan. When Rockey returned home from his deployment, he wanted to focus on something he felt truly passionate about. As fate would have it, he found his calling one day when he stumbled upon an old dog in a freezing snowstorm. He took the dog home and nursed it back to health even though the dog was blind, deaf, and badly injured. Although the dog only lived for a few more months, Rocky made sure that those last days were filled with love and attention. He realized that it didnt matter how long senior dogs still had to liveit mattered that their last moments were spent in a caring home. Since senior dogs in shelters are often overlooked and have a very hard time getting adopted, Rockey knew that he could make a real difference; so he got his other veteran buddies together and launched Vet Friends Foundation. Since 2016, they have found homes for more than 130 dogs from shelters across the US. Once the medical needs and personalities of the dogs are evaluated, the canines are ready to be adopted into loving homes. Part of the reason why senior dogs make great pets for veterans is because they are calm, relaxed, and laid-back. Whenever a veteran chooses a dog to adopt, the organization covers the pets medical bills for the rest of the pups life. Although this nonprofit is based in the Detroit area, they also have volunteers working to expand the mission in Ohio, Missouri, and Californiato provide a sense of purpose and connection for American war veterans.
