US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has defended US military sales to Pakistan amid criticism from India, which says it is the target of a $450m F-16 fighter jet deal between Washington and Islamabad.

During a news conference in the United States capital on Tuesday, Blinken said that the military package approved earlier this month was for maintenance of Pakistans existing fleet.

These are not new planes, new systems, new weapons. Its sustaining what they have, said Blinken, who spoke alongside Indias External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar.

Pakistans programme bolsters its capability to deal with terrorist threats emanating from Pakistan or from the region. Its in no ones interests that those threats be able to go forward with impunity, he said.

Blinken met with Jaishankar a day after he held separate talks with his counterpart from Pakistan, Bilawal Bhutto Zardari.

In our discussions we talked about the importance of managing a responsible relationship with India, Blinken said after that meeting on Monday, without elaborating.
The US has maintained strong ties to both India and Pakistan for decades, despite various points of tension between the nations.

US State Department spokesman Ned Price said earlier this week that the relationship we have with India stands on its own; the relationship we have with Pakistan stands on its own.
While Jaishankar did not criticise Blinken publicly over the F-16 deal, the Indian foreign minister said during an event on Sunday that the US position was not fooling anybody.

For someone to say, Im doing this because its for counter-terrorism, when youre talking of an aircraft like the capability of the F-16, everybody knows where they are deployed, he said, referring to the fleets positioning against India.

Very honestly, its a relationship that has neither ended up serving Pakistan well nor serving American interests well, he added.

Pakistans military relies heavily on the US, but the relationship has strained in recent years, particularly during the war in Afghanistan.

For its part, India historically has bought military equipment from Moscow and has pressed the US to waive sanctions required under a 2017 law for any nation that buys significant military hardware from Russia.

Jaishankar said on Tuesday that India also has purchased arms from countries such as the US, France and Israel, while noting that India had the right to exercise a choice which we believe is in our national interest and was free to reject changes due to geopolitical tensions.

Over the last 30 years, the US has made strengthening its relationship with India a high priority as it seeks allies in the region to help counter the growing strength of China.
The US has stayed largely quiet on Indias continued relationship with Russia following the invasion of Ukraine, and was pleased when Indias Prime Minister Narendra Modi told Russian President Vladimir Putin that it was not a time for war.

US President Joe Biden held talks with Modi in April as Washington sought more help to apply economic pressure on Moscow over the war.

Jaishankar has suggested that India is working behind the scenes and that it weighed in with Russia during negotiations to open grain shipments from the Black Sea, part of what Jaishankar called the countrys widening international footprint.

There are many more regions where we will be intersecting with American interests. It is to our mutual benefit that this be a complementary process, Jaishankar said.

Meanwhile, Blinken said during the news conference that India and the US should lean into core values including respect for universal human rights, like freedom of religion and belief and freedom of expression, which makes our democracies stronger.

In recent years, India has been accused of a range of human rights abuses, including curbs to religious freedoms, particularly against Muslims.

Jaishankar responded indirectly to Blinkens comments on Tuesday that both India and the US were committed to democracy but from their history, tradition and societal context.
India does not believe that the efficacy or indeed the quality of democracy should be decided by vote banks, he said.

Cuba has voted to legalise same-sex marriage in a national referendum.

About two-thirds of the population voted to approve reforms in a new Family Code, which will also allow surrogate pregnancies and give gay couples the right to adopt children.

It marks a big moment for Cuba, which saw gay people persecuted and sent to work camps in the 1960s and 70s.

However, there was significant opposition to the reforms among religious groups and conservatives.

The referendum on Sunday was for a new Family Code - a 100-page document which went through more than two dozen drafts and hours of debate in community-level meetings.

Cuba's government had backed the law change and ran a nationwide campaign urging people to approve it.

Speaking as he voted on Sunday, the country's President, Miguel Daz-Canel, said he expected most of the population would vote yes and that the new code reflected the diversity of people, families and beliefs.

On Monday, preliminary results indicated an "irreversible trend", with 66% of votes counted so far in favour of the reform, electoral council president Alina Balseiro said on state television, according to AFP news agency. The law required 50% of voters' approval to be adopted.

The reforms were the culmination of efforts by gay rights activists in Cuba.

Official attitudes towards homosexuality on the Communist-run island have changed over the past decades, partly thanks to the efforts of former leader Ral Castro's daughter Mariela.

In the early part of communist leader Fidel Castro's rule after the 1959 revolution, homosexual men and women were sent to work camps for supposed "re-education".

However, many in Cuba still oppose the step, including evangelical churches and other non-religious conservatives.

Parts of the opposition also campaigned for a "no" vote, urging Cubans to seize a unique opportunity to hand the country's communist government a defeat in the polls.

Cuba's first ever LGBTQ hotel opens

Some anti-government activists consider the referendum an effort by the state to improve its human rights image following a brutal crackdown on all forms of dissent in recent years.

The referendum also comes during a serious energy crisis, which has led to daily power cuts affecting millions of people across the island.

both had some neat parts, but overall, I didn't like either one.

Meanwhile a game like Pathologic 2, which has one of the best stories in gaming history sells about 50,000 copies and no one bothers to even review it and the guys who make it go bankrupt.

If you're in the games industry and want to make single player story driven games, which idealogy do you go for?

That's what makes me sad.

This isn't even a new thing. Silent Hill 2 sold about 1 million copies. Resident Evil 2 sold 6 million copies.

So what did we get? Tons of games that aped Resident Evil because that's what the devs thought gamers wanted. Blue Stinger, Evil Within, Daymare, etc

Spec Ops the Line, also one of the best stories in gaming history sold about 700,000 copies.

The message is clear. Meaninglessly badly written melodrama without thought or effort sells a ton, actual crafted characters and storylines that weaves gameplay into the plot is bad businsess.

Which is a massive shame.

I thought it was a bog standard average game gameplay wise with one of the worst stories in mainstream gaming history of plot heavy games.

It makes me sad that games like it and Beyond Two Souls are the standard bearers, telling game companies the kind of storytelling gamers want and how massively slow the standards are for writing.
