Curious now, based off the ringtone topic, and knowing how many people are like me in that we use our phone alarms to wake us up...

For my part, these are my most-used:

(Philip Glass, Metamorphosis One)

(Greg Edmonson, Inara's Suite, from Firefly)

(Bear McCreary, Passacaglia, from Battlestar Galactica (2003))

(Clair Obscur, Tiresias)

(Murray Gold, A Lot of Life Behind Us, from Doctor Who (2005)).

So how about you lot? Like something gentle but dramatic to wake you without a headache, like my lot? Or something annoying to make sure you get up and turn it off?

I alternate between the opening bars of these two, but right now it's the former:

(Lacuna Coil, Wide Awake - first 13 seconds)

(Within Temptation, Faster - first 20 seconds)

One interesting thing I noticed was that if one of the moshers noticed that someone dropped something, they stopped everything they were doing and held it up so everyone could see.

Definitely left a... different... taste than the two HUGE dudes I saw brawl and wrestle right in the middle of the floor. But apparently that was all in good fun. Surprising.

The former's about usual for a good mosh pit, and a metal crowd. It's why I love it. And yeah, if there is any fighting it's generally in fun or over someone not respecting the mosh pit etiquette, which is to say no abuse or intentional knocking people over etc, in most places.

Edit: wow I can't type this morning...

Im really surprised how nice and welcoming everyone was. I even had someone explain to me, as the band was playing, the general etiquette of the mosh pit. I didnt even have to specifically ask.

That's cool. And yeah, that's pretty much the atmosphere at most metal gigs. It's why they're the genre I end up at most, people are so friendly & kind. When I went to see Leaves' Eyes 2 guys helped me get my wheelchair right up next to the barrier at the front, and during a Lacuna Coil gig a couple of years ago I changed my shirt in the midst of the crowd and nobody turned a hair or tried to grope me or anything. A little sad that that's so unusual it bears mentioning, but at non-metal gigs I would have *expected* to be groped while doing that, so I wouldn't have dared.

I dislocated my shoulder in my first mosh pit at my very first metal gig, when I was 19, and that was before that happened every day. I was having so much fun (that was also a Lacuna Coil gig) that I put it back against the pillar in the middle of the dance floor and carried on regardless. Did the same 3 more times that night, because I was loving the show so much I didn't want to have to go to the first aider and miss any of it. (I've seen them something like 9 times since then. xD)

...why would a 72 year old be posting on GameFAQs?

Because I've been gaming since the mechanical arcade games of the 1950s, built my first electronic game for oscilloscope display as a teenager in 1961, and have watched the growth of electronic games from the beginning.

Good for you! :) Age shouldn't be a barrier to gaming in one way or another (though yes, I do agree with the certificated games *being* certificated, even little kids have age-appropriate games they could play).

I'm 33, but medically retired already, and have been for several years. I've been pretty well told outright that if I ever try to go back to full-time work it could kill me.

If people shouldn't have kids because their kids occasionally do stupid things then no one should have any >_>

Pretty sure that is not the point of this. No parent should be letting their kid put plastic over their face and failing to notice. That's how kids get killed. FFS, every plastic bag here has "danger of suffocation" on it and warnings about letting kids under 3 play with them. Does nobody read anymore?

So anyone "worthy" of being a parent needs to keep constant surveillance on their child 100% of the time, got it. After all if a kid sleeps alone in their room they might choke on their saliva or something and die, no reasonable person would ever let their full attention wander for even a second when it comes to monitoring the actions of their child.

Now you're just being deliberately ignorant and facetious. If that's how you interpret my post, you need to study reading comprehension rather more often.

No sensible parent would leave a kid that young unsupervised in public, not with known hazards around and the chance someone might snatch them. Under 5, under 3 especially, is a very vulnerable age for a child; that's one of many reasons infant mortality is so high up to the age of five. As for your commenting as though leaving a toddler alone should be normal and reasonable behaviour, I just hope you never have one to look after. I wouldn't trust they'd survive your neglect.

I had a minor bout after GenCon, but never too bad. I had about one day of feeling really crappy and then it was mostly just an annoying cough.

My wife has twice ended up with bronchitis after cons.

Ouch! Bronchitis is decidedly not fun, I sympathise. With my underlying problems the one time I've had that ended in my dislocating both shoulders and a couple of ribs every time I coughed. Thankfully, I wasn't living alone at the time -- unlike now.

I felt bad yesterday, but today I'm so damned sick that I suspect I'll wind up in hospital by tomorrow afternoon at the latest. I can just about keep down sips of water and liquid morphine, and stave off adding opiate withdrawal to the mix, but I can't swallow anything solid at all, and between a badly upset stomach and the fever I'm fighting, I seriously considered taking my bedding to sleep on the bathroom floor for the coolness and proximity. The big problem is that I have dysautonomia as one of my underlying chronic illnesses, and dehydration is blackout territory for that. Worrying.

It's peculiar though, I seem to be the only one in the convention Facebook group to have been dosed this badly this time.

@Lorthremar - Con crud is the convention-goers' nickname for the colds, coughs & flu many people pick up after closely interacting with a big group of people from all over the world. It's rather like freshers' flu. I don't usually get it this badly; last time I was in hospital as an in-patient was 6 years ago, and the last bout of flu, last year, was combined with sinusitis and a double ear infection. I'm just grateful I don't get it often, but I wondered how many others catch con crud on a regular or semi-regular basis.

(Also, this is the longest & most coherent post I've written anywhere all day.)

So, Worldcon in Dublin was brilliant...but now I feel like somebody ran me over repeatedly, and it seems I have full-blown flu as my version of con crud. *shivering with fever* So. How bad have you ever had post-con infections etc? And how many people did you interact with closely enough to catch their germs?

There were about 6,000 people at Worldcon; I can't tolerate more than that really, but between them, the ferries & the hotel (though that was quite a good one), I feel really awful just now. Sigh.

My stepmother left my father 7 months ago, and the two of them have been an outright nightmare about putting myself and my (step)brother into the positions of "piggy in the middle", though. All that said, stepmum is a very different person from birth mum, so I really don't believe that if would have been thus acrimonious on both sides had it happened to me as a kid.

Trialia, I am a long term mudder, there is slang and alternative rules of punctuation and grammar for mudders because we survive by typing extremely fast and doing multiple things at once (through typing).

Nog for instance is slang for nodding, it's not a typo, its just a term mudders use.

Almost everything that can be shortened, or especially not use punctuation or parts of the keyboard you don't use regularly is removed. Therefore, even though I have actually taught English, graded papers, and got my masters with a 3.97 GPA, I will almost NEVER use you're when typing. Why? Because I type over 100 wpm, and I don't stop to think about it, I revert to the norm while mudding.

Also, even though you didn't answer the questions, I have to say anyone who will eat a BBQ coca-cola pizza....is not normal!!

I used to do 195 wpm. I never resorted to that.

As for the pizza, I don't know whether I'll like it yet. Never tried it before.

Woah!! Never tried pizza? That is like...actually I can't even think of what that is like....I mean.....never trying water?......maybe??....except I think pizza tastes better? OMG.

Also 195 is super fast, think I was around 130-140 according to that online typing competition website (Forget it's name), but yeah, it's not the typing speed itself, but more, just abbreviating everything and ditching almost all punctuation that is a hard habit to break once you do it for awhile.

Before I met my wife (6 months before in fact) I mudded hard core for a year (14 1/2 hours a day) with over 95% of the time in combat. Those bad habbits have followed me, and probably will forever.

Fair. I learned to type on an old Olivetti typewriter, so I had to actively teach myself to stop hammering the keys when I switched to a computer later on. I have trouble with dislocating my wrists and fingers if I get up to my full speed from years ago, now, so I have to be more careful, though it still happens every now & then when I get really angry.

Of course I've tried pizza, just not this kind.

As far as people on the net being better off than the norm may go... not anybody I know of...!

And as for having internet access... It may not be a "thing" in a lot of places in the States (I've heard it happens in a couple of cities, anyway), but here in the UK, our public libraries have computers & provide a certain degree of internet access for free (usually one free hour with the option to pay for a second, though my own local library don't charge for the second hour either). I know a number of homeless people or people with otherwise insecure or severely impoverished living situations who spend a lot of time in the library I normally use sometimes to save having to use utilities at home, sometimes just to stay indoors. So it's wrong to assume internet access makes somebody rich. By worldwide standards? Maybe. But within their own societies? No.

You have to pay for extra internet time at the library? Maybe its because I havent been to one in a long time, but I dont ever remember paying to use the internet...

*shrugs* Eh. I don't know about where you live, but my local library used to charge a pound for the second hour of computer time, till about a month ago. The first hour was always free though.

Not even the name-calling (the most clear-cut of violations) got modded. Nothing.

*sigh* I wish that surprised me. Same thing happened to me, though thankfully only once.

It's one of the more problematic aspects of having a forum moderated by a group of its members, and with an indefinite degree of transparency or consistency on rules and enforcing them within the environment in question.

Nope. I'm 33 and have 7 of my adult teeth remaining, total. One of which is a wisdom tooth. I have something called dental hypoplasia, which means my teeth crack and crumble to bits, no trauma necessary. It's such a nightmare.

The only reason I even have that one wisdom is because it came through after all my other upper teeth were extracted (17 teeth in one op, upper & lower); my mouth was overcrowded before that, so there just wasn't room for it.

On the plus side, both my upper wisdoms used to be at right angles under the roof of my mouth and the thin layer of skin between them and the air used to get super sore whenever I had a cold, and now they're no longer in the roof of my mouth it doesn't anymore. So, there's that...

It's not a mental illness. It's people who feel the same hate as Trump does. Who feel so passionately about their hate and political beliefs that they plan and carry out these terrorist attacks to try achieving their goals of starting a race war.

This, partly anyway. Not only race war. But the situation in the States isn't really about mental illness. If you look at the worldwide statistics it's very clear that those of us who do have definable mental illnesses are overwhelmingly most often the targets of violence rather than the perpetrators. It's also evident that far too many of the general public have trouble differentiating between, to put it simply, "bad" and "mad" which are not one and the same.

For the record/background, I have bipolar disorder with psychotic episodes - which is to say, auditory hallucinations - as well as obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). I'm also autistic. And not once, as an adult, have I ever assaulted or hurt anybody other than myself in any situation other than self-defence. I am not unusual. Think on it.

Lol, I know right? I have two of those, one black & one white (I managed to lose the first one for a long time, then found it again after I'd replaced it), both used. I've never needed to replace the battery for either of them, and they still charge well a decade or so later.

Heh. Various editions of Bejeweled and/or Tetris, usually. They get stuck in my head, the repetition can be strangely soothing. I've had dreams about other games that I later turned into fanfiction stories, too...

I have done before, & they lasted me years. I've only ever had one brand new laptop, and that was when I got a compensation payment for something; I've never been able to afford one otherwise. Good models though. I always make sure to buy them in person, so I can make sure they function well.

Of course mine isn't properly on this poll. UTC/GMT, or currently UTC+1/BST - Universal Time Code/Greenwich Mean Time, or UTC+1/British Summer Time. Which means it's 2am right now & I have 6 hours til the Hugo Awards voting deadline.

This. BST, currently 2am at time of posting. This time next year there will be no BST. GMT all year round, unless we decide to have permanent daylight saving time (again).

https://www.nytimes.com/2019/03/27/world/europe/daylight-savings-time-european-union.html

Not that it makes a major difference for me, anyway. Unless I wear a sleep mask I invariably wake at dawn in summer - whatever time it is.

Nope, but I'm at GenCon this week.

I've seen the advertising for that one, but never been. It's not so easy for me to travel outside Europe unaided as it used to be - much as I miss doing so!

Hoping to meet anyone in particular? I love Worldcons especially because I know so many people there, it's like a big meet to make new friends & spend time with old ones

Debit cards are more dangerous to use than credit cards. If someone manages to get your debit card number, they can drain your account and while the bank is legally obligated to return your money after you file a complaint, they don't have to return it right away and they can charge you for overdrafts the entire time.

With a credit card, any disputed charges are placed on hold and you don't have to pay for them.

Get a credit card if you can, then ask your bank to cancel your debit card and give you a plain ATM card. An ATM card can only be used to withdraw cash from an ATM and cannot be used to make purchases.

If you have bad credit or no credit, most small banks and credit unions offer secured credit cards; you deposit money into a savings account and you're given a credit card with that amount as your limit. If you can demonstrate that you can handle the card wisely, they'll be glad to offer you an unsecured card with a higher limit. Shop around and make sure you get a card with no annual fee. If you pay it off every month, the interest rate is unimportant but it will bite you in the ass if you carry a balance.

If you're talking to me... I should remind you, I have both bipolar disorder and dyscalculia. Ergo, credit cards will never happen for me. Not to mention that I don't have a high enough monthly income to qualify for any credit card or associated account that I've ever seen anywhere.

Anyway, it is as I have already pointed out, there just isn't ever enough in my account to make it worth stealing from me. I survive on government welfare, after all. It isn't a whole lot.

Or for those who are not aware of it, the World Science Fiction Convention, to give it its full name?

It's in Dublin, this year, in two weeks' time, & membership sales stop tomorrow, except for exchanges & in-person sales at a local convention before this one...

So, given the regular worldwide membership, who here is going this year?

Me, I tend to make it every other year; gives me time to save for a hotel room & lets me skip the ones that usually wind up being in the US (they're too far away & it's too much hassle for me - San Jose in August would've killed me). Last one I attended was Helsinki... Lots, lots of fun. Exhausting, but worth it. So?

If youve never been scammed then the only options are you dont have a card or admit you have not been scammed yet but will get scammed in the future.

Wheres the option for youve never been scammed and dont think you will? Options seem a bit leading.

I know, right? I'd have gone for that. I'm always careful, and I only have one debit card anyway, no credit cards. I don't have enough money for anybody to care about scamming me.

Pfft. I actually have a comparatively *new* cassette player, but have never owned a car so wouldn't be voting for that one.

Anyway, an "everything" store near me, a few years ago, were selling stereo units that had cassette, CD-mp3 (& .wma), radio & record player, with a slot for USB flash drives & one for SD cards, for just 80. And they're good solid units too. I bought one as a holiday treat for myself after a pretty awful year about 5 years ago (I lost two very dear friends at painfully young ages, that year), and it's still going. Will record tape, CD, vinyl or radio to the memory card in mp3 or wav format, and it lets me split tracks before export as well as after.

Great deal there, and it means I can revisit some of my old mixtapes from when I was a kid that I still own, as well as some older audiobooks of out-of-print novels, that simply haven't been released on CD or Audible yet. So why wouldn't I? I still have the mixtape my first long-term love made for me before we started dating (2002-03).

It's about the memories, for me, and recordings I can't get in other formats. I stream & listen to mp3s on the regular, too, so it isn't a case of not moving with the times. I just don't think it's necessary to abandon the past entire when moving towards the future, is all.
