Near the end of the game you'll get a choice to pick one of them and getting that person to trigger as a choice has 2 requirements. Being link level 5 is one of the absolute requirements(for most of them). The other requirement is 'meeting at least 1 of 3 other different requirements' and seeing their event in chapter 6 is one of those 3 so it's not entirely pointless.

So basically even if a character is link level 5, if they don't meet any of the 3 other requirements they won't appear as a choice in the end so keep that in mind.

Celes didn't have an arc about stage fright but she did have one about being cold and distant. You could tell from the way she talked that she didn't really open herself up to anyone. After being put in the acting role of Maria this changes and she lightens up and becomes a lot softer afterwards. So it is technically a significant event for her development, but it's probably not all that obvious in translation maybe.

Granted that's not really the reason why people make a big deal out of that scene. It was just novel for the time

Ao just has a super boss. Not really story relevant. Well, until CS3 came out and presented something that might actually be relevant to a small detail regarding the area the boss is in but it's still overall very insignificant.

There's also technically an added scene near the middle but it's not new information so much as just showing you something you probably would have already deduced after completing the game.

We don't know for 4 anyway because it's not out yet. But I think they've made it clear that 4 is like this grand finale to every arc thus far so... I'm betting it'll be pretty important.

As for 3... I mean you don't necessarily have to play the previous games to understand it but there's quite a few moments where there's an emotional cue that comes from playing the previous games that'll be completely absent without them. Your actual enjoyment of the game would certainly suffer.

But that's only assuming that you actually enjoyed and have fond memories of those games. If the prospect of playing the old games puts you off so much to the point that you're forcing yourself to play them, to be honest you probably won't benefit that much from them. Like, even if you know the character, if you don't give a shit about that character regardless it's not going to matter lol

I always used Fie for my field attacker.

I like the way she runs, she has B rank in 3 categories, and the gun shot comes out faster than any other attack. Also it was kind of fun to 'learn' the range point of when the knife changes to a gunshot.
