Cool Hand Luke (1967)

What we got here is a failure to communicate.

Sometimes nothing can be a real cool hand.

I dont know if Ive ever heard these quotes, I probably have, but Ill be using them all week to see if anyone catches them. Im not a very religious person but I caught some of the subtle comparisons to Jesus in this. That egg scene, when hes laying on the table after his victory, he poses like hes been crucified. That was probably the first one that caught my eye. Also, there being 50 inmates eggs could be the sins of them all? Soundtrack was pretty good, too. Ballad of Cool Hand Luke is a phenomenal theme song. Plastic Jesus also amazing. Not sure about that ending. Fuck those prison guards for not trying to save his life.

Happy to check this off my movie bucket list, but I think Ill need to watch it again to fully appreciate it. This is one of those movies that I can see getting better with multiple viewings. For a 60s movie, Id say it holds up pretty well.

Perfect Blue (1997)

So I finally watched this last night at like 1am. Wow, what a trippy movie. Crazy Mima or Rumi effortlessly hop skipping around like a murderous Mary Poppins on steroids was terrifying! This gave me some Fight Club vibes with all the cuts going back and forth from her real life and being in the studio performing. It was done so well. I vaguely remember Black Swan but of the little things that I do remember it reminded me of some things in that. But I still dont know whats really going on. Its played out soooo well.

Mima and Rumi.
Mimas Room.
Mima is Rumi?

Did she really get hit by that truck early on and is this deformed former pop star/actress with a broken psyche? I also thought that creepy Me-Mania dude and Rumi were related from their facial features. But yeah, what a trippy ass movie. I loved it!

Pretty much same. Ace Ventura, The Mask, a lot of Jim Carrey movies, I still love now. TMNT I absolutely know I still love. One movie that I fondly remember for some reason is Dick Tracy. Ill have to revisit it and see if I still enjoy it as much as I did as a kid.

Murder by Death (1976)

Well, I made it to the end and vaguely remember them talking about a man with 10 fingers but no pinkies or something but didnt care to understand the twist. The plot went all over the place in the last 10 minutes or so that I lost track of what was actually going on. Like who were the random names people were spouting off trying to finagle the money for themselves? This also really didnt age well with all the racist asian jokes. It was pretty bad. It had a lot of familiar faces but also of actors/actresses that I never could put a name to. I went in expecting a murder mystery/comedy but was bored to death.

The Love Witch (2016)

I get what they were trying to do here, and it was a great homage to 1970s trippy hippy shit right down to the dialogue and how it was delivered - big cringe. But my goddess, I now have a huge crush on Samantha Robinson. She was stunning. There were a lot of beautiful women in this actually, like all the characters in the background in the pink tea room. Instead of looking at Trish I was mesmerized by the lady behind her sipping tea. As the movie progressed, I couldn't quite put my finger on what type of movie this was: romance, comedy, soft porn, horror, B movie? It checked all those boxes.

I kinda enjoyed it though, only because of Elaine. She was interesting enough. Probably cause she reminds me of my ex who was also into witchcraft and stuff, but I digress.

Stalker (1979)

What the hell did I just watch? That was my first thought when it was finally over. At first I thought it felt like the movie Annihilation and just kept watching it because I wanted to see what was going to happen next. The cinematography is phenomenal even with using some pretty shitty looking locations. For a late 70s movie this had some awesome detail in it's shots. This movie was slooooow. I honestly fell asleep a few times. I will say that this was not what I expected after seeing the title, I really thought it was going to be a horror flick.

The characters being named Writer, Professor, and Stalker also gave me heavy Wizard of Oz vibes, especially when they enter the Zone and the movie goes into color which I thought was neat. That's probably intentional but I can't understand why. The final scene was "an ohhh there it is" moment but still left me with more questions. The way these characters interacted with all the grimy environments was entertaining though, again, I don't know why. I would never sleep face first in the mud with insects crawling all over me.

When Marnie Was There (2014)

Being more of an introvert myself, I immediately connected with Anna and have felt the same anxiousness when meeting new people or going out and being with an unfamiliar crowd. Or having that feeling of not fitting in, feeling neglected or unwanted. This film felt really grounded into how everyday life can be for those who feel they are outside of that invisible circle that she speaks about in the beginning of the film. The locations and art of this are beautiful. Classic Ghibli. It also has that trademark mysterious vibe that all Ghibli films bring. It kept me on my toes to the very end. Like was Marnie a ghost, an imaginary friend, or perhaps a forgotten childrens doll? The final twist brought it all together, and it made me shed some tears, not gonna lie. All I could think about afterwards is my own grandma, and how much I miss having conversations with her. If this truly is the last Ghibli film, that just adds another layer of sadness. The only thing I can say that I didnt like was that I couldnt watch this with Japanese voiceovers, but they did an OK job with the English dub (looked up the English cast and I knew that was John C. Reilly's voice!)

Hunt for the Wilderpeople (2016)

"Pretty majestical."

"I didn't choose the skux life, the skux life chose me."

This was a hidden gem when it came out. I didn't know anything about it. I think this was the first Taika movie I've seen and it made me a fan of his work. Sam Neill was great in this, too. Pretty much everyone was great, even Pyscho Sam. Bush Man! Just a lighthearted, funny, feel-good movie. I enjoyed it a lot.
