| Skye Reynolds 07/28/18 9:31:17 PM #21 | I don't think I've acted in a directly racist or sexist manner. I think some of my opinions could've been construed that way though. One example which stands out in my mind is my response to Peter Jackson's 2005 remake of King Kong. I complained that they changed the three lead characters: Ann Darrow, Carl Denham, and Jack Driscoll. Carl went from an ambitious man to a parasitic capitalist and Jack went from a rugged sailor to an intimated intellectual. Those complaints are fair or so I still feel. But Ann went from a damsel in distress to a strong female protagonist. Now, I wasn't thinking about the seven decades of social change which had taken place between the original and the remake. I wasn't thinking about how Ann Darrow, being the sole female character, became the movie's default representation of women. I was mad because they changed my story. (And damn them for it!) I feel like I could take up a career in screenwriting and that a criticism from my teens or early 20s could come back to haunt me. "Of course he'd be mad the sequel made Karen more of a rebel. That's not the same thing. There have been many times when comedy actors have taken on action roles and excelled at them (Die Hard). Besides, he'd already dipped his feet into the action genre with A Knight's Tale. But when you have a visual which looks more like Silence of the Lambs or Ichi the Killer than it does Batman, that's reason to say at a distance, "I don't like this thing" or "I don't think I'll like this thing." It was the performance that won the people over. And, well, yes, he was the honored dead. He must have nailed his audition. That's why he got the role. That's the stuff fan casters don't see. The opinions were based on complete ignorance. The stuff like "I'll expect him to have sex with Batman" was pretty stupid. The people who didn't think he had the acting chops for it or that didn't like the look of the character had reason for doubt. |

| Skye Reynolds 07/23/18 12:04:45 AM #15 | It's the only time in the history of comic book movies when an apparent miscast turned out to not be a miscast. Also, as good as the role was, that was not the Joker. People felt cheated at a first glance because that was not the character they were used to and he wasn't. But people forgave the artistic liberties because it was the best villain performance of the 2000s and, yes, because the actor had died. It was just kind of a hushed whisper at the time that the character had nothing in common with any prior incarnation of the Joker beyond color scheme and underlining motivation. Had Heath Ledger lived, I think the movie's dramatic reimagining of the Joker would've been a lot more controversial. Maybe I'm wrong about that. We'll never know. But to act like everybody was wrong and we should withhold judgment is silly. 9 times out of 10, your first instincts will be correct. If a scrawny guy gets called to play the hulking henchman, or a 22 year old is cast to play an 88 year old scientist, there's an overwhelming possibility that the final result will be just as terrible as you would imagine. |

I never noticed it before, but the NES version has two catch screens and the All*Stars version only has one. In one catch screen, Mario runs into a goomba and dies after successfully clearing the first few pipes. In the other, he grabs a mushroom, then stops after clearing the first pipe. The All*Stars version only has the catch screen in which Mario dies. |

I'm perfectly fine to have one TMNT, one Voltron, one Batman, one He-Man, one Spider-Man. If the show captures the spirit of the original and feels like a modern update, I'll give it a chance. If I can tell at a distance that it's gonna be different, then this generation can have their version of the show and I can have mine. |

Over the course of 15 films, they featured crossovers with other giant monsters, supernatural elements, Godzilla's gradual conversion from villain to hero, multiple alien invasions, recurring allies and adversaries including a three-headed arch nemesis, the adoption of a son, an island of monsters which would be established as Godzilla's home, and a robotic doppelganger. That sounds like a film franchise based off of a comic book character -- except there's no comic book. The films are the source material. And the original series has more or less been the blueprint for all subsequent continuities. Nearly every monster from the original series has returned in some capacity whereas none of the characters who originated in the 80s, 90s, or 00s have ever returned. |

Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Spider-Man, Captain America, Captain Marvel (Shazam), Incredible Hulk, X-Men, the Flash, Swamp Thing, Fantastic Four, and Iron Man all had shows, live action or animated, outside of the comics. This isn't a great series written by an unknown publisher. This is a comic made by one of the biggest companies out there. If Aquaman had great villains and mind-blowing stories, we would've seen them adapted a lot sooner. |

I wouldn't trade that for another movie the quality of The Dark Knight. It's a hokey persona. If they had made him something special back in the 1950s and had stuck with it through to today, he could be right up there with the best of them. But when you have a show which repeatedly finds excuses to place the bad guys in the water just so that he can do something, it makes you realize just what a bad persona it really is to have. We don't care that he's Superman who talks to fish. We enjoy joking about how useless he is outside of the pool. It's not like he's a real person, so I don't have to worry about his hurt feelings. I hope Jason Momoa's film goes well for him, but I'm always gonna see Aquaman as a punchline because that's the Aquaman I choose.. It just looks like a job for him. |
