Dead Cells beated!

I turned on respawns because life is too short to continually lose an hour of progress. Only had to use it against the last boss (Hand of the King), which took me 3 tries.

Very fun game. Feels great to play.

I will continue playing a bit more, as it seems like some more stuff unlocked/changed after the credit roll. I also seem to be missing quite a few powers or something, as there's been numerous things throughout my runs I've been unable to use (coffins you can rub - probably some sort of teleport, long vertical shafts I cannot get up, doors with circles I can knock on but nothing happens, etc.).

OH MY GOD IS THIS ALBUM SUCH A BREATH OF FREAH AIR! Just nice easy, approachable pop. So much more my speed after the last 2 weeks. Im going to make the easy comparison and say it reminded me of Lorde a bit.

Had a good run going on Dead Cells. Same run I beat the 1st boss I also beat the 2nd. Felt like I was cruising, then I ran into an Elite that shredded me before I could heal.

Fucking demoralizing

I feel like I might turn on the Multiple Deaths thing in Custom Mode.

16 - Taylor Swift - Folklore - Its too long but this one did grow on me a bit in subsequent listens. Of note, Ive continued to enjoy the song Exile, and have found myself going back to that particular track many times since we ranked this album.
17 - The White Stripes - Elephant - Im just so ambivalent on this album. Its listenable but not something Id seek out to listen to. Its the same way Ive felt about all those White Stripes singles over the years, so I guess its no surprise Ive the same feeling about a full length album.
18 - Phil Collins - Face Value - I dont have any particularly strong feelings about this one. As an album, I enjoyed this more than So, even if it doesnt have as good of singles. Its mostly just a pleasant, fine listen, other than the bizarre Beatles cover that ends the album. That ones just a big miss for me.
19 - Black Marble - It's Immaterial - Theres such a dreamy, almost ethereal quality to this album. Or maybe its that it feels like it was recorded on the other side of a thin wall and were getting only 80% of the soundl. I dont know. I feel like I was so close to really liking this but theres just some thing or element thats missing.
20 - Vast - Visual Audio Sensory Theater - I appreciate some of the artistry here but something about this just did not click with me.
21 - System of a Down - Toxicity - I said this at track ranking time and Ill say it again, this is just a sound that no longer appeals to me. I enjoyed it, and System of a Down in general, when I was in college but its hard for me to revisit.
22 - Peter Gabriel - So - EIGHTIES!!!!! This album is so screamingly 1980s its ridiculous. Its also an album with a pretty strong split between songs I like, songs I think are okay, and songs that I did not like. The singles, such as Sledgehammer and In Your Eyes are great but the bottom tier is so bizarre that it really brings the album down for me.
23 - The Cranberries - No Need to Argue - Another album I dont have particularly strong feelings about. Its fine enough but it doesnt thrill me, which isnt really a fair criticism because this isnt the type of album thats trying to thrill. But thats just the way it goes sometimes.
24 - Faith No More - Angel Dust - I just did not enjoy this album. Its hard to pinpoint exactly what it is that rubbed me the wrong way, I just know this was a chore to get through. I guess I kind of liked the cover of Easy, but its so tonally different from the rest of the album it hardly even counts, in my mind.
25 - Portishead - Third - Third is an enormously moody and atmospheric album. Its also slow and depressing, the exact antithesis of the generally upbeat and energetic albums that form the top of my rankings. In short, this album was a huge bummer for me that felt like it was sucking my energy away. Easily my least favorite album of this cycle.

  1. Metallica - Master of Puppets - Quite possibly the definitive Metallica album. Certainly the one Ive gone back to the most over the years. But then again, after re-listening to this, I dove back into Ride the Lightning and And Justice for All andyeahthose are pretty damn good too! (Maybe even better???). Overall, just a juggernaut of an album.
  2. Guns N Roses' - Appetite for Destruction - Tremendous from start to finish. Theres the 3 big singles but even beyond that, theres not really a bad song here.
  3. Avenged Sevenfold - Avenged Sevenfold - Metal is such an odd bird for me with these rankings. Its seemingly either love (Master of Puppets, Powerslave) or hate (Crack the Skye, Palimpsest (spoilers for next ranking...)). This self-titled album was one of the big surprises for me of this cycle. Much like Powerslave, this was another case of why the hell didnt I know about this?!?. Its as catchy as metal can get, with fun riffs, good singing, and some sometimes goofy lyrics. Hell, even the more slow/country songs are good! Metal sometimes has a problem of songs sounding kind of same-y but thats not the case here.
  4. blink-182 - Enema of the State - I was a big fan of blink during my 15-25 year old period, which also coincides with their heyday. Enema is just perfect pop-punk for me. Catchy, fun, sometimes juvenile and silly, but with enough heart that it manages to avoid being kitschy.
  5. Dream Theater - Images and Words - Id listened to some random Dream Theater songs back in college but for whatever reason never really got into them, despite liking a lot of artists of a similar prog metal sound. So this one wasnt a surprise as much as it was a head slap. Dream Theaters got a great singer that really matches the big, epic, almost operatic tone of this album. And I know that this isnt even considered their best!
  6. The Beatles - Rubber Soul - I mean, its The Beatles, so its hard to go wrong. Its no Abbey Road, but what is? An album of songs that have been seared into my brain. So much so that I had a hard time ranking this, as it was often hard to say really, your ranking this ABOVE the frickin Beatles?!?.
  7. Sunspot - Singularity - Another of the big surprises from this cycle. Perhaps a little bit unpolished in parts but its a tiny band from the midwest that probably about 10K people have ever heard of! I enjoyed the pop-punkish bent to a lot of the songs, and yes, I do wish I had F U money. The biggest compliment I can give is if an album makes me want to listen to more from an artist, and Singularity passed that test with flying colors.
  8. Opeth - Damnation - That statement earlier about metal finds the natural exception here, with this being just a like from me. I always knew Opeth as an unclean vocal death metal band, and so though Id heard a song or two, it wasnt a sound I particularly cared for. Damnation then was a real left turn, with clean vocals and a much more mellow, melodic sound. I could say its maybe a little bit one note, but when its played this well that doesnt matter. Also, its a short album that doesnt overstay its welcome.
  9. Jack White - Fear of the Dawn - I was worried about this one, as I wasnt a big fan of Elephant, the White Stripes album we covered that features Jack White. Imagine my shock when this was a very different, more edgy/hard/electronic sound that really appealed to me.
  10. Japanese Breakfast - Jubilee - Another pleasant surprise of this cycle. I had no idea what to expect going in, and what I got was an eminently listenable piece of pop. I am to understand that the upbeat tone belies some of the more somber messages of the lyrics but Im practically lyric blind sometimes so I didnt quite catch that.
  11. Miracle Musical - Hawaii Part 2 - This has to be the oddest album we covered this cycle. But because of that, it stands out and is memorable, much the same way Rain Dogs was in the last ranking cycle.
  12. Mos Def - Black on Both Sides - Im not big on rap, but this was better than I expected. Theres some good lyricism and a lot of catchy beats. The sheer variety on display here also helps mask the length of the album.
  13. Eagles - Hotel California - Its(more than) a bit reductive to say that its the title track and then everything else butits kind of true for me? Hotel California is a tremendous single that casts a monstrous shadow over the rest of the album, and does the bulk of the work on carrying this album up my rankings.
  14. Love - Forever Changes - Its not The Beatles but its still pretty good for 60s rock. Its an easy album to forget about, but when you listen its yeah, theres some decent stuff here.
  15. Linkin Park - Hybrid Theory - One of the albums I loved as a late teen that I was hesitant about going back to, because its such a product of its time period. Theres a lot of angst and emotion here that doesnt really hit the way that it used to (and why would it to a 30+ year old), but at the same time, I cant pretend that theres not some good stuff here. Or maybe its just hitting those nostalgia centers and making me think its better than it is.

As with the previous album rankings, I updated this each week as we covered an albums songs. As someone whos never been big into music, a lot of these albums were new to me, so many of these are ranked based upon just a few listens.

Heard album before ranking: 6/25
Heard at least one song from the album before ranking: 12/25
Never even heard of the artist before ranking: 7/25

As with any ranking, there is a certain amount of fluidity here, especially with the middle of the list. Ultimately, I did this thinking about one question: how much do I want to listen to this album again?, so this is a very subjective list for my tastes.

If I tried to put this into tiers, Im thinking
Tier 1: 1-7 - Great albums that I really enjoyed and will continue to revisit in the future
Tier 2: 8-19 - Albums that range from like to okay but that I could see myself listening to (at least parts of) again
Tier 3: 20-23 - Albums I didnt particularly care for and probably wont listen to again
Tier 4: 24-25 - Albums that are a big fat NO for me

Sorry, this one's only getting two listens this week. I did sit down and pay more attention to the lyrics, which really revealed the absolute DENSITY of this album lyrically. Like, there's hardly any choruses at all, which is just tough for me because there's nothing to latch onto. So many of the songs just start and it's a 3.5-4.5 minute barrage of story, which would be fine except I find the singing to be kind of atrocious, especially when he got into that yell/scream range. I also did pick up on some of that interweaving of lyrics/themes/whatever between some of the songs.

Woman (in mirror) was a fairly easy choice as #1. It didn't grate on me, had a nice little beat, and I did enjoy that lyric "tiny dots on an endless timeline". I already mentioned how a kind of liked Objects in Space on my first listen and that remained the case, despite it being spoken word rather than singing. The middle songs had some good lyrics or poignancy. The ones at the bottom had too much yell/scream for my tastes at were kind of hard to get through.

Just to be clear, I'm not a fan of this. I'm glad to have given it a shot but I cannot envision myself ever listening to this again.

My mom has blood cancer. They're not sure the exact type and advancement yet. She's going for more tests in the next few weeks. But signs don't point towards good news.

I feel like I've been putting up the defensive shields, trying to maintain calm and reassurance because that's all I can do. But it's this constant low thrum in my thoughts. There's been times I feel distracted and can forget about the reality for a while. And then there's points when I just feel like bursting out into tears. And this is literally just the beginning...

It's so overwhelming.

Snake5555555555, I enjoyed your thoughtful write up and how much the album means to you.

I say that because you might not want to read the rest of my post...

Did a first listen and I feel like this is a repeat of last week, just with more traditional rock rather than metal. Once again, I failed to find much in the instrumentation and found the vocals to be not good. It was just a lot of yell-y/scream-y vocals with some seemingly random rock beats. Again, I just felt a disconnect between the vocals and the instrumentation. This is 10+ minutes shorter than last week's album but you could have fooled me with how interminable it felt.

Okay, now let me try to walk it back some.

I will of course be giving this another few listens this week. And I will try to pay more attention to the lyrics. I listened to this on an afternoon walk and that's not particularly conducive to absorbing/appreciating lyrics, especially for me with a new album. I think I find more enjoyment in how singing melds with the instruments (maybe some of the reason I enjoyed Roses so much with the French lyrics). An album that's so lyric and story focused is a tough sell for me and there was certainly points where my brain went all Charlie Brown's teacher (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ss2hULhXf04). All that said, I kind of enjoyed the last song a bit.

Two more listens did not change my opinion. I just didn't care for this. I feel like I should like this but my reaction was for the most part "meh". Two of the three instrumentals were actually very nice, to the point where it made me wonder if there's any classical music that would work for Ranking. The final instrumental is clearly the worst (of the 3), and the shortest, so I just put it last. The "real" songs on the album didn't do very much for me but I tried to rank them as best as a could, despite my flagging interest.

Back in 2013-2014, I was playing catch up with the series, actually got up all the way to Freedom's Cry
But then they announced that they are releasing two games on the same year (Rogue and Unity) and I said fuck this, I am done

This year I decided to return to the series and I am currently doing a marathon of all the games (started Syndicate today) and...yeah this shit makes me feel like quitting again
It's bad enough that I heard about the Odyssey/Valahalla bloat and being 200 hours games and now they decided to announce 4 different games that will be releasing...pretty much I assume in less than a year apart?

I am tired

I also fell away the Unity/Rogue year. One a year was already pushing it, then they did 2!

Since then I have eventually played all the main games thru Origins, which was just a month or so ago. I will very likely play Odyssey and Valhalla at some point.

With that said, hopefully these are more bite sized experiences and not all 40+ hour games.

Yeah, I was including your inevitable last place vote in my statement.

It's especially weird to me here, on a video game forum, where people have probably had greater exposure to purely atmospheric music.

Well thats one of the reason I need to revisit a few of these again. Especially when my reaction to that one was SO negative.

Love it or hate it is still good though. Sometimes you get a pleasant surprise.

Im the week after you and will very likely be doing some nice upbeat pop-ish albums that will likely elicit more milquetoast reactions of like or dont like rather than love or hate.

It's funny comparing the reactions to Portishead here and on the music-dedicated forum I frequent. There, we voted Third our #179 favorite album ever and the band itself #62 on the all-time artist poll I am currently hosting.

(Their debut, Dummy, sits at #35, which I maybe should have nominated instead as a more accessible work - but Third also dominated its vote that week despite only being my third choice, so I'm thinking there are plenty of Portishead fans here who simply aren't actually participating in these polls)

Youre not gonna like my ranking of it (but you probably already figured that)

Ive had my ranking done for a while but I wanted to do some spot listens just to confirm and jog my memory so I could write a sentence or two.

They matter in that they are a key piece (along with Star Wars) to keep people subscribed to D+ monthly, and it appears in that, they are a success and matter significantly.

In terms of the MCU value, introducing new characters is going to depend on who our next crop of Avengers are, but WandaVision played a crucial role to Dr. Strange, Loki has played a crucial role for Quantumania, Ms. Marvel is the second lead (as far as we know) in Captain Marvel 2, and I'm sure handing the shield to Falcon is going to be of immense importance. Now, you could argue "yeah, but how important are these stories to those?" and the answer is always, "to the studio, they've made it clear it's as important as they can manage it".

I think you did a better job of getting at what I was feeling, that the series are more important to D+ than they are to the MCU. (FYI, not implying you feel the same.)

Johnbobb posted...
Yes, when they're designed to set up major pieces of the franchise and are advertised as necessary viewing with the franchise as a whole

Loki literally introduces who they're making out to be the next big bad of the series, Ms. Marvel is (supposedly) setting up the upcoming The Marvels, Hawkeye directly connects to both Black Widow and several upcoming shows/movies, etc. Arguably Moon Knight and What If? are the only ones that don't really matter.

Which isn't to say that they're not important at all, just that it's hard to see Marvel ever making the shows required viewing for broader MCU understanding. Correct me if I'm wrong, but the movies have provided "enough" explanation for any elements with origin from a series that the "deep dive" is optional.

On a certain level, do the D+ shows really matter that much? A cynical take would be that they're being made to keep people subscribed to D+, and so, as long as a the shows aren't atrocious, they're cheap enough to fulfill that objective. A couple of bad shows in a row won't sink the MCU, but a couple of bad movies certainly could.

Eternals
Spider-Man: NWH
Dr Strange: MoM
Thor: L&T
Black Panther 2

For me, that's 2 good (Spidey, Strange), 2 okay (Thor, Shang-Chi), and 2 "whatever" (Widow, Eternals).

Series
Wandavision
Falcon and Winter Soldier
Loki
What If
Hawkeye
Moon Knight
Ms. Marvel
She-Hulk
Untitled Halloween special
GotG Holiday Special

For me, that's 2 good (Wanda, What If), 4 okay (Falcon, Loki, Hawkeye, Moon Knight), and 1 "whatever" (Ms. Marvel). ...I know I'm higher on What If than just about anyone else.

I think best movies > best series but also worst movies < worst shows. If I could have only the movies or the series, I think I would very slightly favor the series but it's a pretty close call.

PerfectChaosZ posted...
Of course theyre also producing much more content at once than the other phases. Wed get Thor 2 and thats all we had for so long waiting on the next thing to come out wouldnt be for a long time so it got immortalized as a terrible movie. Whereas Miss Marvel came out and people rallied against it but now its over and theres the next thing to talk about next month.

Yeah, that's a big part of it. Good? Bad? Doesn't matter! Onto the next hit. It makes each entry (movie or series) feel less "special" than it used to.

Are the people eating only one meal a day just completely sedentary or don't exercise/work out? As someone who gets quite a bit of exercise, I feel like I'm eating something practically every 2-3 hours or I'm miserable.

Did a first listen a few days ago and, uh, yeah...

What a bunch of you were saying last week (for So Long, Astoria) applies for me this week. This was just a long slog of "whatever"; a bunch of okay/fine metal instrumentation but with vocals that didn't seem particularly great and didn't feel "connected" to the music.

We'll see if my opinion changes with more listens but I am skeptical when my initial impression was so poor.

It appears Westlife is yet another boy band. Not sure why we are being subjected to a boy band week but...

Lol, I kind of figured that from context. Have to have been a one hit wonder

Im skeptical but will remain open minded, considering Spice was better than I anticipated. Also, there are some guilty pleasure songs from Backstreet and Nsync

I mean, we're getting more "episodes" but the total runtime for a season has got to be roughly the same across all these various MCU shows.

Not a whole lot of X games out there other than what you mentioned and some random X-Men games that probably aren't good for this.

I'll "vote" for Xeodrifter since it's short and a Metroidvania. But I'd probably be willing to give Xenoblade Chronicles a shot if it was picked. It's pretty far down on my backlog priority but with a 3 month window it's possible I could get that done, especially since it's on Switch and that makes it excellent for "watching sports but actually just having it on in the background as I'm really playing a game".

Hard to argue with most of the choices on that list. My personal list would probably have 6-7 of those, though they'd be in a different order.

Love the love for DKC3. That's a great game that always gets overshadowed by DKC2 because it came out so late in the SNES lifespan.

I played some of Lufia 2 on an emulator way back when but I didn't get past that 99 level side quest dungeon. Feels like the type of game I should revisit...if I ever had the time to revisit games...and an actual way to replay them...

American Idiot should absolutely be an album we cover at some point. Honestly, now that you mention it, Im a little surprised it didnt come up during the initial phase. Maybe it being overplayed has caused a negative backlash.

Ive heard the singles off Dookie but not the full album. The height of its popularity was before I got into music.

I added it to my album ranking spreadsheet and, of the 3,300 albums I have listened to, it landed in the bottom 10 (do note, however, that I mostly listen to music I expect to like, so I'm not saying this is an 'all-time worst album' as I haven't listened to much notoriously bad music - I'm certain there are thousands of albums worse than this I would rather not subject myself to)

Just, half the stuff here sounded to me like the montage transition music of a mid-2000s teen drama. The other half was rejected Sonic the Hedgehog background music. I already find pop-punk vaguely annoying and this had the added layer of being overly long and largely generic. I got a headache a few tracks in. The only moment that felt okay to me was a cover song, of which I greatly prefer the original.

Interesting, and provides more insight on your general dislike (comparatively speaking, based on Rank the Albums) of Singularity and Enema of the State. I feel like I'm the opposite and have a general soft spot for pop-punk. I've a feeling I will rank this one below those as well, just not quite as far down as you.

I can see the merit of your some of your criticism. The album is a little bit too long, though I feel like we could say that for a lot of the albums we've covered. I don't know how old the band members were in 2003 but I'd imagine having a sound of a "mid-2000s teen drama" makes sense. Pop-punk in general just skews to that late teen demo. Not sure I get the Sonic stuff but then again I've played almost none of those games post-Genesis.

I'm a bit of a masochist and (so far) have listened to everything, even if I know after one spin that I strongly dislike or hate it. I don't blame anyone for "pulling the ripcord" though; life is too short.
