TopicFleas are testing positive for the plague in parts of Arizona

http://abcnews.go.com/US/fleas-testing-positive-plague-parts-arizona/story?id=49177920

Officials in two Arizona counties are warning the public after fleas in the region tested positive for the plague, the infamous infectious disease that killed millions during the Middle Ages.

Navajo County Public Health officials confirmed on Friday that fleas in the area have tested positive for the rare disease. The public health warning follows a similar notice from Coconino County Public Health Services District in Arizona warning of the presence of plague in fleas found there too.

Both counties are situated in the northern part of Arizona.

"Navajo County Health Department is urging the public to take precautions to reduce their risk of exposure to this serious disease, which can be present in fleas, rodents, rabbits and predators that feed upon these animals," the public health warning states. "The disease can be transmitted to humans and other animals by the bite of an infected flea or by direct contact with an infected animal."

Officials also urged persons living, working, camping or visiting in these areas to take precautions to reduce their risk of exposure, including avoiding sick or dead animals, keeping pets from roaming loose, and avoiding rodent burrows and fleas.

While the warning may ring alarm bells for people who only know of the plague from history books, the findings are not without precedent.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) notes that studies suggest that outbreaks of the plague occasionally occur in southwestern U.S. states like Arizona during cooler summers that follow wet winters.

Symptoms of plague include sudden onset of fever, headache, chills, and weakness and one or more swollen, tender and painful lymph nodes, according to the CDC. If untreated, the bacteria can spread to other parts of the body.

Honestly I never really cared for his stand up too much. Something about the eccentric, hyperactive style never really clicked with me for a lot of his jokes.

I can see that. His bit on golf, though, is top fucking tier.

TopicWorld's oldest man, Auschwitz survivor Yisrael Kristal dies at 113

http://www.bbc.com/news/world-middle-east-40904907

The world's oldest man - the only member of his immediate family to survive the Holocaust - has died at the age of 113.

Polish-born Yisrael Kristal died on Friday, a month before he was due to turn 114, Israeli media reported.

Mr Kristal, who lived in Haifa, Israel, hit the headlines last year after deciding to celebrate his bar mitzvah a century late.

The original celebration had not taken place because World War One broke out.

Mr Kristal was born in the village of Zarnow, about 90 miles (146km) south-west of Warsaw, in 1903.

The son of a religious scholar, Mr Kristal lost his mother and father during World War One, according to reports. He later moved to Lodz to work in the family confectionery business.

After the invasion of Poland by Nazi Germany in 1939, Mr Kristal and his family were moved into the Lodz ghetto.

His two children died there and Mr Kristal and his wife Chaja Feige Frucht were sent to Auschwitz in 1944 after the ghetto was liquidated.

Mr Kristal's wife was murdered in Auschwitz but he survived, performing slave labour in that and other camps. When he was found by the Allies in May 1945 he weighed just 37 kg (5 stones 11 lbs).

According to Tablet Mag, he thanked the Soviet soldiers who rescued him by making them sweets.

The sole survivor from his family, Mr Kristal emigrated to Israel in 1950 with his second wife and their son, where he continued to run his confectionery business until his retirement.

Mr Kristal was officially recognised as the world's oldest man by the Guinness Book of Records in March 2016.

Speaking at the time, he admitted he did not know the secret to a long life, saying: "There have been smarter, stronger and better looking men than me who are no longer alive."

He is survived by two children, as well as grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Israeli newspaper Haaretz reported.

His daughter Shula Koperstoch said he had died on Friday afternoon after becoming ill on Thursday.

She told Israeli news website Ynet [in Hebrew] she had had a "great father", adding: "Despite all that he went through, and he lost the whole family in the Holocaust, he had a lot of optimism, and he always saw only light and good in everything."

The man who kept O.J. Simpson's getaway Bronco hidden for roughly 22 years wants more than $500,000 for the infamous ride ... and he's hoping to get it from the guys on "Pawn Stars."

Simpson's former agent, Mike Gilbert, got in touch with Rick Harrison in the hopes of unloading the car he got from Al Cowlings following the 1994 slow speed chase on the 405 freeway.

During the episode, which airs Monday on History, Gilbert told the guys he's had very serious offers in the past -- but wants more than half a mil or no deal.

The challenge for Rick -- we've never seen him spend that kind of money on the show before. The most expensive items ever sold at the Pawn Shop were gold bars valued at $128,000.

http://news.sky.com/story/brussels-police-shoot-at-car-full-of-explosives-10979534

Police in Brussels have opened fire on a car believed to be filled with explosives.

Shots were fired after a high-speed chase through the suburb of Molenbeek.

The vehicle then reportedly got stuck in traffic, at which point it reversed into a police car.

Belgian broadcaster RTL quoted a police spokesman as saying: "We got the driver out, and he immediately told us that there were explosives inside."

The car is understood to be registered in Germany.

A bomb disposal squad are on the scene and are using a robotic bomb detector to search the vehicle.

Brussels has been on high alert since 32 people were killed in suicide attacks at the city's airport and a metro station in 2016.

Many suspects linked to those attacks, and the 2015 Paris terrorist attacks which left 129 people dead, lived or transited through the district of Molenbeek, which borders Brussels City.
