I agree with seph g here, one of my biggest pet peeves in video gaming is when the final boss requires a completely seperate skill from the one you spent the entire game honing. Sonic is notorious for this, and the dumb flippy minigames are a dumb wall to put in front of the final boss.

Also Sonic 1 isn't really a game designed for speed like 2/3/Mania are, so going slower than you might normally turns an already painfully slow game (by todays standards) into basically 7 Grand Dad

Duolingo is for extreme beginner level learning only. It barely teaches grammar at all (unless you're in a well established language which has a lot of text descriptions written). For me I used it to get used to reading and basic vocab.

After that I moved onto various youtube series and blog posts, where you can find beginner and intermediate grammar lessons, but more importantly you can get deep dives into a very specific grammatical nuances that let you actually understand the real language.

Then after you have that intermediate grammatical foundation, you can focus on fleshing out vocabulary again using a flash card system (I use memrise) and also native material (shows, etc). The grammatical foundation will let you realize when you understand the structure of a sentence, which is fine even if you don't know all the words because you can just look them up and add them to your vocab list. But most importantly you can recognize when you understand the words but NOT the structure, which is something you should go look for a specific blog post about. And so on you learn grammar and vocab back and forth and you continue this for the rest of your life pretty much.

This is basically where I am getting to, duolingo has been my primary vocab and character familiarity resource, and then I use those lessons so I can jump into intermediate courses right away.

I do find it troubling that in my first month of learning Mandarin I was able to see some very clear grammar mistakes on duolingos end, but all in all I find its a good device for review and vocab.

So judging by everyone else's experience I should expect another few months of using it, max.

Route 13

What was once a set of fishing docks, is now an industrial wharf. Fishermen are replaced with sailors and workers. Theres a large shipping ship on the east side that the player can enter, probably because the local bad team was trying to smuggle cats or something dumb like that. The west side has several factorys, and theres a lot of trainers running back and forth from one side to the other. Theres a big shipment that's barring you from making your way to Lavender Town, forcing you to take a turn into Route 11.

Route 14

Route 14 is mostly unchanged. The path on the left hand side is now revealed to be a big hill with the benefit of 3-D. On top of the hill is the same patch of long grass and a bench overlooking the fence maze. Sitting on the bench lets you see the shimmer from hidden items in the fence maze.

The maze itself is almost completely the same, although it looks a little worse for wear from the years.

Route 15

The top ridge of route 15 is full of houses now. Trainers wait bored next to their doors for passerbys to challenge. In the middle of the row of houses, theres a house with a fenced yard on one side, and long grass on the other. This is Kanto's pokemon daycare. Entering leads you to meet the daycare couple the Old man introduces you to the new daycare center, which takes place almost completely in your pc. Theres a "Box" that can hold two pokemon, and 6 eggs at a time. If the pokemon make an egg, its stored in the box queue. Your pokemon and their eggs can be taken out and switched around from any pc.

When two pokemon are in your daycare box, they show up as walking models in the real world, and you can visit them in the daycare center's yard.

Talking to the Old Lady gives you a "Bigger Daycare" project available for funding in public works. Funding this opens up another yard for the daycare center and another box in your pc. This means you can have two different sets of pokemon breeding at the same time.

The bottom ridge is mostly unchanged. There are signs of wear on the road but nothing that a little bit of money wouldn't fix!

Yeah medals were great! They kind of forced me to engage in the world and try new things. Like I personally loved the one type challenges for the elite four, because it forced me to use a lot of pokemon I liked but couldnt justify putting on a team.

It was more a joke because when I was a kid I already found the Viridian Forest theme to be very creepy, so I was asking how it could be even creepier.

Gotcha. The cool and somewhat annoying thing about gameboy music is that because it's so simplistic, we can all hear different things in it. A remastering can completely ruin the mood of the original for a lot of people.
