Cycling road is similar to D/P's cycling road, its on a high bridge and you can see the original cycling road below it (Its now called route 17) . Its overgrown, and has a few houses on it.

The new cycling road itself has a gimmick, there are ramps all over, and hitting a ramp with your bike allows you to skip the trainers on the course. There are 12 trainers in all, but if you try moderately to avoid them, you should only have to face 5. If you do it perfectly you won't have to face any. The trainers here continuously attack you, even if you've faced them before, so subsequent trips down cycling road, your goal will still be to hit all the ramps, unless you're grinding.

When you get to Route 18, its still the same stub of a route, so not much has changed. Theres a bench you can sit in, and some pretty fly boys you can challenge for a battle. Going back to Route 17 doesnt seem to be an option right now. The local bad team is planning something in front of the door.

Upon entering Fushia City, you meet a man who identifies himself as "the warden"

Im intentionally leaving it vague so that you can fill out the rest with your imagination. If you listen to the FR/LG version it has a somewhat upbeat and peaceful tone, so this would contrast with that.

Route 3 isnt much changed from the route we know and love, but there is now and entrance to "Spoke Mountain" back where there used to be nothing but a girl who falsely accused passerbys of sexual harrassment.

Obviously, we move past the clearly fan made mountain to Mt. Moon. The entrance is boarded up, and theres a big pink sign above that reads "Fairy Tours" examining the entrance you find a sign that reads "Fairy tours is closed for renovations" an NPC outside complains that its been closed for 3 years.

This leaves us no choice but to head to "Spoke Mountain" you brace for the inevitable bastardization of what should have been a pure unadulterated Kanto.

Spoke Mountain-

Spoke Mountain isnt really worth talking about. Its your standard cave with zubats, geodudes, trainers, probably the evil team of the game kicking a kitty and your rival fights you at the end which would have been challenging but she healed your pokemon first so it ends up being way too easy.

At the top of the mountain you'll find a bench that looks out over most of kanto. I won't spoil every city, but you can see Smog around Vermilion, you can see that the seafoam islands now seem more like an ocean village, and if you sit there long enough you might see a legendary bird fly in the distance.

Also at the top of the mountain is Rydel Rydel Jr. And the new, state of the art cycling road. Its a giant bridge that extends high over the original cycling road. Rydel talks about how he put so much money into cycling road but now its full of hooligans. He gives you a bike because "if people see a child like you enjoying Cycling Road, everyone will know its safe!"

He tells you to go down cycling road, and he will meet you at the bottom.

Viridian Forest:

Backtracking to route 2, you see theres an opening to go into Viridian forest where there wasnt one before. Its at what would previously be the exit in days gone. The old man at the entrance says he saw the gym leader charge through like a man on a mission.

Entering the forest you see a very familiar layout, the old route is there the same as before, but its overgrown and lots of the areas are super narrow. Going into these narrow areas triggers a camera change and the player character is doing that "barely cinematic sidestep" bs that literally every game does when they're trying to create tension. While going through these areas its possible for low level beedrill to pop out at you.

The music is the same old Viridian Forest music, but with a creepier vibe and a little bit of theremin thrown in.

Your destination is the former "start" of Viridian forest, where you find the gym leader, Leif under a large tree (this large tree has a hidden antidote on the side of it). Leif asks if you have any fire Pokemon and proceeds to proclaim that he vows he will never buckle under the heat of a fire pokemon again! He cuts a new exit to Viridian Forest and invites you to fight him at his gym.

Going back to Pewter you can fight his bug/grass gym and challenge his Kantonian Skorpi (grass/bug) that has the ability "Kindling" which negates fire damage and raises attack when its hit with a fire move.

Before I forget, the habitat pokedex from fr/lg is back, pokemon are default organized into habitats instead of by number.

This is important for this game's gimmick.

Also super sad I have to clarify this but your pokedex is no longer sentient and insecure

Pewter City:

If you found route 2 depressing, you'll be happy to know pewter city is almost exactly the same. Theres one or two more houses, but all in all, not much has changed. Some NPCs mention they dont get many visitors since the old gym leader left.

With the topography afforded to us from 3d graphics we can see that the Pewter Gym is on top of a hill behind the pokemon center, a bench lets you see quite a bit of Kanto from the hill. Lets visit the gym later.

If you were to go to pewter city gardens you would find a field of flowers with a man and his combee inside. He mentions that he used to use repel on his garden when he was young, but ever since he started using combee's sweet scent to draw in more pollinators, the flowers bloom so much more beautifully.

The museum is the star attraction of the town, going inside you're greeted with a giant aerodactyl skelton hanging from the ceiling. Ever since fossil ressurection became the norm, the museum has been able to fill itself with actual live Pokemon, you can see lilleeps and anoriths in a big tank on the wall, and theres a kabuto touch tank in the middle of the floor. Upstairs you'll find a scientist who tells you fossil resurrection is old news, he has found a way to adapt a fossil's genes so it could survive in modern day Kanto. He can only do it with the skull and armor fossil though, so let him know if you come across one.

Finally you make your way to the gym, the sign says its a grass/bug gym. A youngster outside says the leader got really angry and ran down to route 2. Looks like its time for backtracking!!

Route 2:

Route 2's music is big and brassy, to signify a type of "progress" or industrialization feeling to what used to be a nothing route.

Theres a road that goes to pewter, and seems to run straight through what used to be viridian forest. The bisection of the route is gone, there are houses on the right, and thick trees on the left, all accessible from the middle road. Theres a man at the top of the route that reminisces about the forest that everyone used to walk through, and how it became overgrown when the road was put in. An examination shows there doesn't seem to be a way to enter the forest, although there is a bench you can sit on, which changes the brassy tune to a serene soft tune. While you look at what used to be viridian forest, you can faintly hear the cries of the pokemon that still inhabit it.

Digletts Cave also has no entrance, just a sign that says "Due to the pollution caused by human activity, digletts cave has been closed off."

The same patches of grass from before are still there, although interestingly enough, theyre mostly populated by darumaka now.

Viridian City is much more hustle and bustle compared to its past self. The pokemon league challenge is huge, and Kanto's League is the clear "Classic league" the city is full of buildings, mid sized, and there are street vendors all around selling pokemon league branded clothing. Watches, Shirts, Hats. These vendors all sell one item each but a nearby NPC tells you about "trade routes" that you can open up by streetpassing with other people. The more people you streetpass, the more options local stores have!

NPCs around the town are mostly older, veteran trainers. Lots of them make comments about how long they've had their pokemon. An NPC in a pokemon center will give you a nugget if you show him a pokemon thats at least 17 years old (from the 3ds gbc games)

You cant visit Route 22, it seems the Pokemon league has expanded and the entrance is right there at the beginning of the route.

Make your way up to the gym, and you'll meet a familiar face, its Blue! Blue invites you in to see what is now his art museum. Inside the musuem is beautiful vista paintings from every region. Blue talks about how he traveled all over to get these paintings and how his collection is still far from complete (theres an upstairs that you're not allowed in yet). Amoung the various paintings theres a sorrowful drawing of a raticate surrounded by flowers, if you examine it it says "Memories, Artist Anonymous"

In the upper left hand corner theres a woman who is so wired on coffee that she won't let you pass without showing you how awesome she is at catching pokemon. After her tutorial, you can make your way to route 2.

Route 1:

At a glance, route one looks nothing like what we remember, instead of the zig zag path that use to be necessary, there now seems to be a set of stairs that zip you straight to Viridian City. There are small areas to the side of the stairs that you can explore that show the familiar topography of what route 1 was 20 years ago. Over to the side theres a big sign advertising the Pokemart, it looks tacky and out of place. It seems like at one point in time you could take the stairs to viridian without stepping in tall grass, but its currently overgrown. A woman NPC complains that no one has taken care of the grounds for this route in a few years.

Edit: the music is still the route 1 tune, but a slower tempo and a bit more wistful than one would expect. Its not sad or foreboding, but its definitely not the same happy tune from 20 years ago. It has an almost meloncholic vibe.

Pallet Town:

Pallet town is much bigger now, there are several houses, and an apartment building. Blue's old house is now a pokemon orphanage where Blue's sister takes care of unwanted pokemon. Theres a grassy park area near the water where you can sit and look out over Route 21. (Benches now give you a first person view of the area when you sit in them) The Pokemon Lab is still there, and its fancier than ever. Since oak has become the big name on pokemon, there are multiple floors and lots of different pokemon running around the lab. Theres a guy outside the pokemon lab and he gushes about how nature is amazing, and talks about how there are so many sights to see when you sit down on benches.

The story starts in the apartment building, and your character is visited by his neighbor, a character who is both the opposite gender as the one you picked and also, black skinned. She says that all pallet town kids get to choose a Pokemon from the professor, and she asks you to come with her since shes nervous. You follow her to the lab and theres professor oak! 70 years young. He tells you he's far too old to be handing out pokemon anymore, so he tells you to find the other professor, and suggests you go out to find him.

As you go out the door you see professor Elm walk in, hes about the age Oak was in R/B/Y. He introduces himself, gives you your pokemon, dex and pokeballs and sends you on your way

Soon we will have an announcement for hey you pikachu 2, a souless cash grab in which kanto is recolored with sun and moon assets and delivered in such a way that even long time adament fans of the series will be on the fence on whether they want it.

But before we go all that, Im going to go through Kanto, the real Kanto 20 years from the events of red and blue. I'll describe how its changed, how gyms are different, how the towns have grown, and what is happening with all the characters from the first game, one by one.

Let's do this.

animal crossing isnt a single player game, so if you've only played it by yourself it makes sense that you wouldn't enjoy it. But having several people living in a village together is what makes it so nice. Being able to trap your mom in a pitfall, send your girlfriend a shirt with a pixelart bill cosby on it, put up signs that say not to trust your roommate, the fun in the game is created by the people playing it.

That said, I don't think either the master sword or the buster sword are the most recognizeable sword, cause there's a much more played game which I have seen foam replicas of its sword at conventions, and instantly recognized even though I've only played the game for like an hour:
