The Clinton "machine" had far-reaching, decades-spanning influence-- most of it channeled through the Clinton Foundation. "Dynasty" is the wrong term, but there was an entrenched political establishment with the Clintons at the center.

Plus, when you consider how close we were to having Bush-Clinton-Bush-Clinton-Bush in the White House, with the potential to span 36 years... you can't blame people for feeling like the presidency was on the verge of becoming dynastic. Granted, that's more the Bush dynasty rubbing off on the Clintons.

Short answer: yes.

But it only matters for your first job (or two, if you don't stay long). Work experience becomes the dominant factor after a few years, and depending on your choices you might find yourself paying student loan debt long past the point where your degree is still actively helping you.

It's important to lay a good foundation and start out with a leg up... the people you meet in college and your first couple of years looking for work can have a dramatic impact on the long-term trajectory of your career. At the same time, if you're paying off student debt into your 30s instead of investing and saving for retirement, you're crippling yourself financially.

Trump is smarter than average but nowhere near smart enough to be President. I have little doubt that he's smarter than I am, and yet even I could do a better job in the White House. For all my inadequacies, at least I understand that the job would be too big for me and I would surround myself with qualified people, because I'm not crippled by ego and a lifetime of sycophancy. These specific deficiencies tip the scale against any intellectual advantage Trump might have.

The financial impact of hiring / firing is minuscule compared to the impact of Trump's executive orders and signed legislation.

The real problem with all of the hiring / firing is the loss of institutional knowledge. I get that there's a lot of disdain for the "establishment" from all sides, and maybe there's merit in injecting fresh blood into the gov't, but at the same time, you lose decades worth of wisdom when you wipe the entire slate clean at once.

Got my copy of Nier Automata today and put about 3 hours on it (went in completely blind except for having listened to the soundtrack in advance). Best leap of faith I've taken in gaming, in a very long time. I've never played anything like it. The way the game weaves between genres is amazing. It has no business feeling this cohesive and yet it totally is.

Apples and oranges. Hollow Knight is a vastly superior game. It also had funding and an actual team behind it. Still, Undertale is impressive for what it is, and it does some surprising, wholly original, genre-bending things.

Star Wars was always for families, imho. The OT speaks in multiple registers at the same time and balances them very well. The PT, on the other hand, tries (and fails) to achieve a satisfying balance by swinging wildly between fart jokes and immolation.

I know that a good portion of the electorate is confused about this, but despite presidential candidates' empty promises to the contrary, the executive branch can't actually write law. That's why we elect congressional representatives.

For me, it comes down to the engine. Yooka Laylee feels like a BK game grafted onto a different engine that wasn't specifically designed for it (and that's exactly what it is). The movement, control, mechanics, etc don't feel as cohesive as BK. The final boss battle feels especially wonky... almost like a user-created Little Big Planet level where a different genre of game is being forced to run on a common engine that doesn't feel right.

Don't get me wrong, though-- I enjoyed Yooka Laylee. It's not as good as BK but it's not terribly far off the mark either.

Context matters. It's not racist to point out that Norway is a first-world country, while parts of Africa are third-world. However, Trump has a history of saying vulgar and untrue things about the people immigrating from some of those third-world countries. His recent comment reinforces that.

I think you're both right, to an extent.

If I heard any random person say that another country is a "shithole," I wouldn't immediately conclude that they're racist. We all know and recognize that the world consists of first-world and third-world countries. What makes Trump's comment so distasteful to me is that it reinforces his long record of racial remarks.

The original evacuation plan was to jump the fleet through hyperspace, which would have given them a clean, untraceable escape if not for the First Order's new tracking technology.

I don't know what the dreadnaught's speed is versus Hux' ship, versus Snoke's ship, etc... but going just on the information presented in the movie, I don't see any reason to believe it would have been a factor during the chase. Leia and Holdo's plan at that point was simply to stay out of range of the larger ships while retreating to Crait.

There has to be some baseline, implicit social contract. Without government, property rights are unenforceable, you have no freedom to move anywhere, there is no court system to hold aggression in check (i.e. NAP is out the window)... under anarchy, theft would be the least of your worries.

I have this one. It's pretty good-- faithful to the books and authentically medieval wherever possible. The recipes aren't amazingly gourmet or anything, but the book deserves high marks, imo. Could have been an easy cash grab, but they made a real effort.
