Counterpoint: Chocobo GP.

I was gonna buy that game when it came out, I loved the trailer. But then it was a free to play battlepass game with premium currency, a game built on the back of recurring purchases and grinding. The UI sucked, the menus were cluttered, it screamed "spend, spend, spend!!!".

And apparently? The actual gameplay was pretty good. It's just that everything around the gameplay was fucking terrible.

I would have outright bought it if it had launched with a $50 pricetag, no microtransactions, no battle pass. If they wanted to do a CTR Nitro-Fuelled with additional GPs and in-game currency, that'd be one thing. But they built a perfectly serviceable video game that I wanted, and then surrounded it with mobile game elements. It feels like they built a console game, and then built the shell of a mobile game around it after the fact.

Lately I've been playing chicken with my sleep schedule. I woke up 15 minutes before work twice last week. I'd take my phone off charge, go back to bed and listen to music. It's a miracle I haven't fully slept in.

So this morning was no different, I'm exhausted and I have to be at work by 9am. I get up, grab my phone and go back to bed. It's 7am, I have another five alarms going through to 8am where I'll have to start my day.

I dismissed every alarm as it happens, and I just laid in bed watching the clock go up. I saw it hit 8.14am.

I thought "fuck it". Set an alarm for 7 minutes later, at 8.21am.

It didn't end in total catastrophe; I did take a cat nap, but I didn't overshoot the alarm. Still took me a few minutes to get up. But of all the close calls I could have taken, that was cutting it close.

I thought red letter media was a right wing news joint??

I've always been confused everytime I see it come up
Red Letter Media is a group of middle-aged men from Milwaukee who do contemporary and classic movie reviews, and they collect schlocky video tapes and criticize them on the internet. There's a show called Best of the Worst where they watch three terrible VHS tapes, and they used to physically destroy the ones they liked the least.

My understanding is that they lean conservative, but their content for the most part is apolitical. Like they're gonna make jokes about David Carradine cranking one out in a Thai hotel room and accidentally asphyxiating himself, and one of them has an almost perverse glee at seeing old people doing exercises or talking about getting into accidents - really hyperbolic humor. But they're not jumping on-camera to go "January 6 was legitimate, stop the steal!! Let's Go Brandon!!!".

I'll side-eye some of their content for sure, but I think most people can enjoy the content without worrying about politics. Best of the Worst is an absolute gem, and they began watching unmarked video tapes with no indication to what the contents are at some point as well.

I can't personally speak to their political views. If there's evidence that they're absolutely horrible, I'm going to be really upset. But up to this point, I really like watching them talk about shitty old VHS movies and instructional tapes.

TopicDo you think people have the capacity for real, meaningful change?
MrMallard
01/23/23 6:16:28 AM

People are capable of real, meaningful change, but imo people tend to hold onto biases for years even after they've adopted a new point of view and tried to move on with their lives. Improving yourself and making positive changes is one thing, but there's always a little bit of crust around the edges and it's not difficult to let it back in and control your life again. People can regress as much as they progress, the amount that someone can change depends on the person and how hard they're trying.

An important factor is why someone has decided to change. Say you fall out with a friend, and they work on themselves specifically to try and mend your friendship. If you don't want them back in your life, and they revert to whatever state they were when you fell out, were they trying to change for the right reasons? Would their change of heart have held up if the relationship had been salvaged, or would they slip back into old habits once they were confident that things were back to normal? Changing for someone else can probably work out positively sometimes, but I don't think a selfish want is a good foundation to build a new worldview and it doesn't seem sincere if you dump it because you didn't get that selfish want.

Ultimately, my belief is that change - large and small - is a continuous process that someone has to dedicate themselves to if they want to see results. It isn't a switch you flip, though there are moments of crystallisation that can get someone started on the road to real, meaningful change. Change is a process that requires constant vigilance and effort - and the question then becomes, who has the fortitude and strength to make the decision to change and see that process through? Most people can't keep that process up for long stretches of time. I sure can't.

I've changed over time, but I still have negative biases that I have to work through, and long bouts of anger, fatigue and depression makes it really easy for me to justify getting lazy and letting it slide. That desire for change is real, as is the effort I'm making. But it's an uphill climb because there's a lot of regressive things that don't just go away because I've decided I want to be better. The process might never end for me, or for anyone else. But it's worth it to try, and it's that commitment that I think leads to real, meaningful change in the long term.

tl;dr people have the capacity for change but it's really fucking hard and they've gotta stick with it for a long time to see results

Fuck yeah. They put out an album last year themed after like a shitty 80's VHS movie you'd see on Red Letter Media. It's called Bleed Out, and the final song on it - the titular song - is a slow, steady ballad about a guy bleeding to death and accepting his fate, and acknowledging that the last mark he's leaving on the world (the copious amount of blood coming out of him, staining the ground and the wall he's leaning up against) is going to get washed off in time and no-one will remember or care that anybody died there.

https://youtu.be/urUM2Ne_vTw

I've made this topic in the past, but I got sucked back into Guilty Gear stuff and I want to talk about it.

First of all, this was the first new Guilty Gear fighting game in six years. Fans were demoralised because Arc System Works had essentially lost the franchise to Sega - all they had was Sol Badguy, Ky Kiske and That Man, and they made this weird action game RTS type of game that got mixed reception. They gave Ky a son with another Guilty Gear character they didn't have the rights to, so they had to allude to who it was very softly.

This trailer was the perfect way to reveal they got the rights back and were making a brand new game. I was in the fandom during the hiatus, this was fucking incredible.

Secondly, this was the first 2.5D game of its kind. Obviously it wasn't the first throwback to 2D fighting games done in a 3D style - the earliest I can think of would have been Mortal Kombat vs DC, and the first one to really make waves was Mortal Kombat 9.

What I mean is that this was the first game to intentionally "look" 2D. It was the first fighting game to make these cel-shaded character models and develop them to look exactly like a 2D sprite, giving the game the freedom to look, move and feel incredibly crisp, but fully capitalising on the look and feel of the original 2D fighting games. Like you have to understand, the 3D models are physically manipulated frame by frame to look like smear frames. No-one else had this attention to quality before this.

The trailer has such an incredible bait and switch. Like okay look at these two sprites, they're about to fight, oh damn look at them jump around it's 2D - and then the swords clash, and the CAMERA PANS AROUND THEM in realtime to show that they're 3D models. Guilty Gear Xrd was the first fighting game to do that.

Third, the music. Heavy Day is the best lead-in song to a fighting game trailer. Nothing comes close.

This trailer was hype. It was innovative, it was a total crowd-pleaser and it fucking rocked all over. This is easily in my top three game reveals.

Here's the current shortlist, it's big on winners and short on burning garbage:

Try and guess the three movies I've already seen, I dare you.

Would anyone be interested in a thread like this? It'd be a weekly movie, with high points and low points spaced out to avoid tonal whiplash. Imagine going from Being John Malkovich to Bigfoot's Wild Weekend.

All of those comics and their respective artists, sans Dan Shive of El Goonish Shive, are basically their own online art clique. There are guest comics going back to the beginning of most of their comics that each of them penned for each other's comics.

So it turns out that the kids were as young as 13, and most of them didn't speak English. The company is accused of tampering with employee files and intimidating the child workers.

Under the law, children younger than 14 aren't allowed to work. Children between 14 and 15 aren't allowed to work past 7pm during the school year, and they're only allowed to work for a maximum of 3 hours.

This company took child workers who didn't speak English, made them clean slaughterhouse equipment like bonesaws, electric knives and grinding machines, and they manipulated documents to hide the fact that they were breaking 85 year old child labor laws. This is sick.

The language used to describe Israel by the people who got it off the ground was that it was to be an "apartheid state". The goal from the start was to drop in and start subjugating people for their land, and then make it so that Palestinians were treated like second-class citizens. They then continued to steal more and more land, to the point that they're forcibly evicting people and bulldozing their homes to this day.

Israel was never a socialist country. It was an apartheid state, in name and function.

True. I ended a friendship of eight years because a line was crossed, you would have thought we were inseparable before the fallout happened. A lot of long-lasting romantic partnerships tend to bottom out around the point that their kids go to college, and some people divorce in their sixties. You could even count one of the partners dying before the other one as a relationship ending. The natural state of relationships is to end.

I can't say whether there'll be another romantic relationship in your future, but if there is, keep it breezy and fun. It will eventually end, whether a week later or 70 years in the future, so keep yourself comfortable and make it so a relationship with you is a fun ride from beginning to end.

Oh, these are NFTs. I thought you got those as actual figures on your shelf, or something else that's actually cool.
He also had three of the same infinity stone, just in different NFTs

If Mel Gibson gets the Infinity Stones, he'd probably dust black people and Jews.

So basically what I'm saying is that we should behead Mel Gibson before it's too late.

Sometimes I like to find long words and masturbate them into my speech without knowing what they mean.

On one hand, I think the meme is overstated a little because you can modify your party's priorities and make it so they heal more often. It's not perfect, but it's not to the point where Mitsuru is like MaRiN KaRiN every turn. She absolutely does do that if you don't modify her settings, but I found that modifying her priorities led to her AI being much better.

On the other, being able to control your entire party is unequivocally better than having an AI-controlled party, and the original battle system is both outdated for its time and a major pain in the ass to go back to. I legit don't get it, even Dragon Quest 2 from the eighties let you control your entire party.

Also, if I'm being honest, a lot of the anime cutscenes in Persona 3 are off-model and poorly dubbed. There was one near the end that I really liked (Nyx's fucked up deformed human face) and I liked the cutscenes from The Answer, but removing them isn't a huge deal for the most part. It's undeniably a downgrade not to have them, even if they aren't perfect, but it's a downgrade I can live with.

I will admit that I really enjoyed walking around the Persona 3 world when I played FES back in 2021.

So it seems like we're in agreement that Jared Leto has been the least successful actor in the world of superhero movies.
