I only saw her content recently, her "Karl Marx vs Charles Darwin" video was really good. I had no idea that anything like this would be happening.

She carries herself so well, and she seems so comfortable in her own skin. I'm happy for her.

What blows my mind is that she's been on this journey for about a year. She performed as her pre-transition self for the sake of the show while living her life as a woman, putting on fake facial hair and wearing baggy clothes to hide her changing body, and she only came out publically when she was ready to. When she had a compelling script for a video, when she could express her truth through one of her performances.

Referring to videos as "performances" is a bit cringy, and following through on these long-winded cinematic bits is awkward to sit through at times. But I respect that she has a vision, and choosing to frame her public transition through the lens of one of these performances was a bold choice and perfectly executed if you ask me.

I'm happy for Abigail Thorn, and I wish her a long and happy life full of love and acceptance.

Tell you what - Garden of Words is only barely feature length at 45 minutes. I understand being put off by his worse stuff, I saw his early indie movie and I wasn't impressed - even though he animated and voiced the entire thing by himself. But if itd

The Garden of Words was one of my favorite anime movies as a kid, the soundtrack is great and the animation is on a whole other level. I can't speak for the Children who Chase Lost Voices, but I love the Garden of Words so much I actually bought a physical copy of it on DVD.

Saw the trailer. It's no more heretic than Ocean Waves, or their other lower budget 90's output.

I think it'll do well among kids, the animation and themes will be more dynamic than the current reception seems to indicate, and while it won't be a Studio Ghibli Masterpiece it'll likely be received well enough. I get where the consternation might be coming from, but in motion, I think it's a cut above some dogshit like the CG remake of the first Pokemon movie.

It doesn't look THAT bad.

My understanding is that a lot of modern Studio Ghibli movies vary stylistically. Ponyo looks a lot more cartoony than Spirited Away, and Princess Kaguya is in a whole league of its own. The screenshot in the OP looks like a miniature diorama, with details like the bottle lending to that atmosphere and the sheen of the goop that's on the whisk adding a level of detail that really sticks out.

From Ocean Waves to Grave of the Fireflies to When Marnie Was There, Ghibli movies vary in style and tone. Like Princess Kaguya, this is an experiment in style and I'm willing to see what comes of it.

like Dido and James Blunt.

I listened to James Blunt's whole discography like 5 years ago, and it does drop off very fast. But Back to Bedlam is still a good album, and songs like Three Wise Men are still a mood.

Dido was pretty huge in Australia in the 2000's, I conflated her with Missy Higgins who's a more local act. Her and James Blunt have some of the mellower singles of the decade, and I'm kinda craving that.

In fact, the only song I didn't like was Friday the 13th because Octavian's parts were awful throughout.
I hate to be that guy, but Friday the 13th ended up being one of my favorite singles off the album. I really didn't like Humanz, The Good Good had one excellent single and I've traditionally been pretty harsh on Damon-lite songs like November Has Come and Sweepstakes and stuff. But Friday the 13th is such a moody, appropriate song, and I thought Octavian's vocals fit the lyric exceptionally well. He sells it from the first line.

It's like, there's so many awesome layered sounds to the music by the end, and the part before 2D comes in strips away all of the bright, brassy trumpets and snazzy percussion. It's that sparse moment with the bass and piano that made me fall in love with the song, and it reinforced just how lush the song had become by that point. I love it.

It's such a bouncy, strung-out song. Excellent mood music. Its only crime IMO is that it's a serious grower, because it took me a few listens to enjoy it. It won't be for everyone, but I'm a hardcore apologist for Friday the 13th.

I really liked song machine, but my personal issue with it is that the very first song, Momentarily Bliss, is by far the best song on the album and nothing else comes close.

So while the other songs are good in their own way, nothing else quite reaches that high for me after the first track. I hate it when that happens.
I never quite had that, every single up to Strange Timez was better than the last imo. Friday the 13th took a few listens though. Momentary Bliss was one of my least favourite singles when all was said and done, and Desole was the one that made me think that Song Machine was going to be a return to form.

Episode 7 left up questions and mysteries for the following movies to answer (and to be completely fair they were literally just leading to the exact same thing as the OT). Episode 8 did that. Episode 9 then said those answers were wrong.

I wouldn't agree 100% with this, because I think that 8 went out of its way to ruin a bunch of plot threads that were meant to span the entire trilogy. Like let's be real, going "that mystery about Rey's parents is nothing", keeping the audience in the dark about an escape plan as well as the character who's primarily affected by it and then going "we had good intentions the whole time, you should have trusted us and been more patient!" and killing off the big bad was just a bunch of insufferable smug bullshit. The idea of "subverting expectations" got a bad rap because of how The Last Jedi did it, and I do think that it was an intentional spanner in the works that ended up derailing the entire sequel trilogy.

But like I said before, I think TRoS was a worse movie. It was a phoned-in piece of dogshit. Parts of TLJ felt fake and forced, like the shoehorned humor - and I don't think it's a great viewing experience because those moments take you out of it. But as far as I'm concerned, TRoS felt entirely fake and forced. Most of the dialogue feels rushed and expository, pertaining to and leading to multiple macguffins before the final villain wastes 20 minutes of screentime with a nonsensical plan full of possessions and betrayals that amounts to nothing and ends with him sucking the souls out of a couple of characters apropos of nothing.

And TLJ is partially to blame. But I think that the post I'm quoting has a really solid point that a lot of people are skimming over, and it holds a lot of truth as to why TRoS ended up being a worse movie.

TLJ exists, for better or for worse. So TRoS has two options. They can either go back on everything that TLJ said and try to reset the status quo enough to answer TFA's questions in a way that makes sense to the way they were posed in TFA, or they can take what TLJ did and move forward with it to make something completely new. You can either do as much damage control as you can and try to salvage the original vision of the entire trilogy, to the detriment of the final movie, or you can try to turn lemons into lemonade by exploring the ramifications of that second movie and risk making something different and arguably more interesting. You can try and marry the disparate elements.

There's been some consternation over the idea that the most important force users in the movies are Skywalkers. The important ones who aren't Skywalkers - Obi-Wan, Yoda and Palpatine - are directly tied to the Skywalker family and its subsequent feud in one way or another. And a majority of people haven't played all the games and gotten into all the EU stuff where there are more prominent force users - the main conflict of the Star Wars franchise to a majority of people has always been a Skywalker thing, from destroying the previous society to bringing in a new era of peace.

Because of that, I do think it would have been an interesting idea to have Rey be an unrelated party who finds peace in the fact that her higher calling isn't tied to her past. I think it would have been cool to stick with the ending of TLJ and imply that the next generation of force users are growing up around the galaxy, with little to no relation to the Skywalker feud. That's a new direction compared to making Rey a Palpatine - The Force doesn't give a fuck, and anyone can stand up to adversity if they have the heart of a champion. It would at least be an attempt at giving the sequel trilogy an identity of its own.

But Rey is a Palpatine, and that's why she's so good at using the force. The Last Jedi was wrong, she was special all along. Applaud us for layering references upon references to make this movie the most Star Wars it could have been.

I played the Primal demo too. It was okay. I feel like it was tapping into the Buffy crowd. Never played the full game, and I hear that the ending is dogshit - but it was neat. Probably good for a curio, probably not as lofty as Mark of Kri.

Alter Echo is another game with a demo I liked as a kid, but with a full game that's just tedious, annoying bullshit by the end of it. The aesthetic is cool, but I remember beating it as a teenager and being so profoundly disappointed about it. That's a game where the demo is better than the game itself imo.

idk if Battle Engine Aquila is on there, but that was a serious guilty pleasure back in the day. I'd recommend fucking with Battle Engine Aquila.

Seek and Destroy is a budget title from Japan, but it's a very cartoony and heavily customisable tank game set in a world where each tank is a living, sentient being. There are towns for the tanks, there are training arenas, there are new parts to make your favorite tank run that much better, and there's a wide selection of tanks to play as with different guns and stats.

Basically - if you can buy Seek and Destroy, buy Seek and Destroy. That's a decent roster of games I grew up with that might be available.

Also, I used to think that Whiplash was a goofy, charming game about animal testing and wanton criminal mischief, but apparently it peters out about halfway through and it didn't review well.

Can someone tell me everything wrong with RoS? Like what happened to make it "undo" The Last Jedi? I haven't seen it yet and don't plan to lol
Rose Tico is off the team, and she farts around base camp in this movie. It turns out Rey IS special after all, just for the wrong reasons. Her and Kylo DO have a force bond, and their connection is so strong that they kiss at the end of the movie.

Here are some other details that might be of interest to you, with MASSIVE SPOILERS. As in, I spoil an entire plot thread. Don't click here if you don't want like half of the movie to be spoiled, including some ending stuff.

The Leia performance they rigged up with CG and cut footage is stilted, baffling and about as respectful as shoving a hand up her ass and making her sing showtunes. Rey has a force move that lets her heal others using her own life force out of nowhere - it feels like the laziest deus ex machina ever, even considering dumb bullshit like the Jedi mind trick. There's a pointless, time-wasting plot about a spy in the First Order. It's Hux, and he dies 5 minutes after revealing his treachery. Rey uses force lightning and supposedly kills Chewbacca, but he shows up less than 5 minutes later because she blew up the wrong spaceship. Palpatine does fuck-all except for executing a pathetic, barely coherent Batman gambit at the end, he's only there to put butts in seats.

this is hardly a comprehensive list, but these are some of my nitpicks with the movie.

Nah, it can't be the worst film out of all 9 when it's literaly preceded by The Last Jedi
The Last Jedi wasn't exactly a picnic, but I can say completely seriously that it was a better movie than Rise of Skywalker.

Leia using the force to fly through space, as maligned as that scene is, at least tries to go for a grand, charming surprise. It's at least a good-natured attempt to subvert expectations. It's the first time Leia has ever used non-telepathic force powers on-screen to my knowledge.

As silly as it might be, tell me that's worse than Palpatine's returning message to the universe being aired in Fortnite and not the movie itself, before the movie explains his return away with "Somehow, Palpatine returned".

And let's face it, Mark Hamill did a good job in TLJ. Rey wasn't perfect, but her time with Luke Skywalker was pretty decent too. I could even praise Poe at times despite being the fire that lit the flame that signalled the start of the movie's flaming dogturd brand of humor. But in Rise of Skywalker? Fucking EVERYONE was phoning it in. Poe might have been a bit better, and that's about it.

The Last Jedi is where the sequel trilogy fell off the rails, but I think it's a better movie than TRoS. It's simply less of a piece of dog shit, even with its flaws.

If you don't mind Virtual Console suggestions, I'd suggest Wario Land 2.

It's ahead of its time imo - the graphics are great for its time, being the last first-party release on the original Game Boy and possibly the first first-party release on the GBC, and it has branching paths with different bosses and locales. It's a very quirky platformer, with no health bar and a focus on accumulating wealth - as is the norm in Wario games - and it's one of the first games I ever owned.

If a really good GBC platformer from the 90's sounds appealing, I can't recommend Wario Land 2 enough.

In the absence of an equivalent game, I can accept a roguelike. A Robot Named Fight was extremely fun in the absence of a new Metroid game - it has the chunk problem you mention, but it also has over 50 unlockable elements as you play including weapons, new areas and new skills like the Super Metroid wall jump. It also kept its gameplay fresh with a Boss Rush mode, 4-player Deathmatch and a Mega Map with every environment in the game as opposed to a random selection of 3 that makes up a standard map.

The drawbacks are mitigated by the variety of gameplay elements and game modes it offers. It isn't Metroid, but until a new Metroid comes out, it's a close approximation and it's heavily replayable.

Slay the Spire is fantastic too. It's easy to drop in and out of a game, its card based combat is easy to get into, it's on every last-gen console including the Switch and mobile and it's endlessly replayable with daily challenges and unlockable card types that expand the scope of the game.

Man can't dine on roguelikes alone, but they're a quick and dirty alternative to a type of game that might not be focused on at the moment. When Nintendo makes a new Metroid, I'll play it - until then, A Robot Named Fight scratched that itch. Slay the Spire is just great non-committal fun, and for a card game, it isn't hopelessly up its own ass with stupid effect bullshit.

I agree to a point. I think TFA was a fine jumping off point, as safe as it might have been, but TLJ went out of its way to be as difficult as possible and TRoS was a hacked-together mess with 2 movies worth of shit jammed into a sausage skin to try and salvage what was left of a trilogy.

I was invested in the characters of TFA, but they're so inconsistent over the course of the trilogy that it's not even worth watching. It's depressing.

Finn picked up a lightsaber and defended her against a genocidal wannabe tyrant, getting mortally wounded in the process. They had chemistry all throughout TFA, and they drove each other's story arcs. Sure, they didn't get any screentime together in TLJ because Rey was off with Luke Skywalker, but they didn't need to A) craft a whole new love interest for Finn who didn't end up being endgame anyway, and B) reduce Finn to a joke from the moment he wakes up and give him a weak rehash about not running away.

Finn went from "oh fuck, he copped a lightsaber to the spine, what a heroic moment, hope he's alright" to "haha coma man walk around in bubble leaking fluid, funny". And his character never recovered.

Even in The Rise of Skywalker, they tease it with Finn's "I've got something to tell you" storyline. I'm not opposed to it being a force sensitivity reveal, but it was brought up multiple times in a way that alluded to a romantic possibility and its origin could easily be an attempt at a dying declaration of love. Also, the way he chases after Rey calling her name for most of the movie indicates that he likes her a lot and wants to be near her. It was ultimately pretty superfluous, and it ended up being annoying, but I would argue that he showed more concern for Rey - and arguably more legitimate care and interest in her as a person - than Kylo Ren ever did. The possibility was there, and for whatever harebrained buttfuck-backwards reason, they didn't go with it.

Kylo Ren, meanwhile, tried to fight her to the death in the first movie - again, Finn took up her lightsaber and fought him off to stop her from getting killed while she was passed out. His connection to Rey in TLJ was machinated by Snoke, and when they had defended themselves from his guards, he reverted to his darker personality and tried to break her down to join forces with her. The third movie was a clusterfuck in every regard, with new force powers everywhere and enough mastery of the force from them both to actually pay off the force connection thing - but Kylo Ren had still tried to kill her at least twice over the course of the sequel series, spent that entire movie lording over a fascist regime that ruined millions of lives - including the rebellion's - and he had tried to exploit her vulnerability over the course of the sequels.

So why is Rey's connection to him romantic? Why do they shoehorn that in at the end of the last sequel movie, when there was someone in her life who actually drove her to embrace destiny and rise to a title beyond her station? When there was someone who nearly died fighting for her, defending her from Kylo Ren himself? Someone who she actually liked and got along with?

Rey and Finn were good for each other, and they cared deeply for each other. Rey and Kylo were bonded because destiny said so or whatever - which could have easily been a platonic relationship in itself once Ben Solo embraced his redemption. I'm not opposed to Ben Solo getting redeemed, but did they have to deal it with a kiss? Couldn't the power of love heal Rey after the stress of going after Kylo Ren, and ground her in a way that makes her compassionate to Ben's redemption?

Why they wouldn't capitalise on John Boyega and Daisy Ridley's chemistry is beyond me. It made more sense to me for Finn and Rey to be together. I don't dislike Kylo Ren or Adam Driver - I think the actors did the best with what they were given. I just think Finn and Rey had more chemistry in the first movie than Rey and Kylo Ren had in the entire sequel trilogy, and the fact that they faked us out with Finn's pointless, unanswered "I've got something to tell you" story arc is disappointing and insulting.

Finn and Rey made more sense as a romantic couple. No hate to Reylo supporters, except the ones who doxxed Daisy Ridley and Adam Driver to try and get them together irl (?????????) - but Finn and Rey would have been a better couple than the stupid clusterfuck that canon Reylo actually was.

I've seen the promos, it looks bad. Granted, the original show was schlock - I've seen reruns, it's a mediocre action show for people's dads and grandpas. But this reboot looks bad in its own way.

CW shows are all so superficial. They have a bunch of generically pretty actors reading through hackneyed dogshit for 22 minutes a pop, and for all the visual gloss they try to smear over their shows like Riverdale and Vampire Diaries, it all comes off looking incredibly cheap and fake. The dialogue and acting is a cheap pantomime, the sets and actors look cheap and fake, and nothing about any CW show I've ever watched has been substantive to any degree.

Walker looks just as soulless and fake as Riverdale. It can, and should, bomb. The original show wasn't much better, it's a generic timeslot filler - I'd rather watch Diagnosis: Murder over that crap. But Walker looks particularly cheap and fake, especially compared to the original.

TopicPompeo attacks multiculturalism, saying it is "not who America is"

Is Pompeo one of those classic, salt of the earth names descended from the Santa Maria?

If he's gonna go all in and denounce multiculturalism and "wokeism" and all that, then there's no reason not to speak at him in a broken Italian accent or to turn his rhetoric around on him and tell him to get on a boat and fuck off. The reason no-one will do that is out of a basic sense of decency and a desire not to attack a man based on his cultural background, because that's fucked up and rude.

Immigrants, regardless of what generation they are and how naturalised they are, deserve more respect than this human turd seems to think they do. If Pompeo wants to foster an environment where deviation from the "great American norm" is rejected and attacked, then how would he react to anti-Italian bias? How would he cop all the abuse about cooking a nice pizza like Mama used to make, or getting out of the country, that his comments invite? That's the same backlash other races and nationalities face for practicing cultural practices deemed un-american by his reasoning. Chances are, the things he does are as tied to the Italian-American experience as it is to the Republican WASP dipshit experience - just as ripe for the picking for a racist fuckface as the aberrant traits he hints at in his bigoted statement.

It wouldn't be fair. It'd be culturally intolerant and cruel to do so - so let's not. But that's what he's inviting onto others. If he wants to stoke hatred towards other cultural backgrounds like this, then he can deal with the extremist fuckfaces throwing slurs at him because of his Italian heritage. Fuck him.

TopicI'm thinking about getting into brandy. Any recommendations?

I stopped drinking last year due to health concerns. Since then, stress has been getting to me more and more easily. I'm speaking to a counsellor at the moment who's urging me not to drink, and as much as I've been heeding her advice, I'm getting to a point where stressful situations are giving me physical symptoms that weren't happening before - weak legs, and tightness in the chest and stomach.

I'm physically unable to be around people when I hit a tipping point - I have to get up and leave to avoid lashing out, and that tipping point has been reached more and more frequently lately, even around people and places I feel comfortable and safe around. The presence of a single person in an otherwise comfortable environment is enough to set me off through no fault of his own, and it's making my social life unbearable.

There's a failure to cope, and if I don't mitigate this stress, it's only a matter of time before this stress affects me psychologically or physically in a way that I won't be able to control.

I'm going to talk it over with my counsellor. I'm sure her stance is going to be zero alcohol tolerance, and in the event of that happening, I will respect her input and abstain from drinking. I'll also take her stress relief suggestions into account. I want to get better, and I want to do right by the people who are trying to help me.

But the way I handle stress is killing me. This last December, there was one day where I got hit with a level of despair so great I went weak at the knees. I went to bed at 4pm because it had floored me so much, and I didn't even get up for dinner. This last week, the stress of being around my best friend of 7 years was so great I isolated myself for four days. I left an environment I was fine in until he came along, solely because he entered the environment, and the despair that arose from the resulting stress led me to neglect everyone in my life for four days until I found my footing again. I used to cope with this stress by drinking - it was to an unhealthy extent, and that's something I want to work on, but it's all I had. Now there's nothing to cushion the blow.

I didn't quit drinking right away, despite my physical health problems - I tried to find ways I could keep drinking without exacerbating my health issues. One test did exacerbate my health issues - all the veins in my left hand went blue and it started tingling, just like the night I decided to get medical attention. Another test, in which I had low sugar/low carb drinks with an equal amount of alcohol to the first test, didn't exacerbate my health problems. At the time, I was planning to commit to a lower alcohol intake with the drinks I had that second time. I realise now that I was misguided - after going over it with my counsellor, I quit cold turkey and I haven't drank since.

I've since had multiple dreams where I break my sobriety, and the elevated stress levels just from being around certain people in my life are becoming unbearable. And I'm hoping that in extreme circumstances, when my stress levels are so great I can physically feel them, I can afford a casual drink or 2 in a controlled environment to help me cope.

Given that this is an acceptable compromise - which it almost certainly won't be viewed as - I'd like to buy a decent bottle of brandy. Something sharp, sweet and rich. Something expensive to spring for, to disincentive excessive consumption - something to have on hand for emergencies only.

I'm scheduled in for an appointment with my counsellor tomorrow or next week. I'll bring this up then, and it'll probably be shot down. It'll probably be justified.

But for curiosity's sake - if this was an acceptable measure, what would be a good brandy to get? I'd drink it straight, and I'm looking for a rich fruit flavour with a level of alcoholic sharpness that makes it impossible to binge on.

It's an extreme measure to consider, especially when taking my troubles with alcohol into account - but with the negativity I've been feeling lately, I'm desperate to find a solution.

Yeah, it was pretty wild when Daniel LaRusso fell into a woodchipper torso-first and donated his legs to Johnny Lawrence. It's so fucking awesome that Johnny is a 4-legged karate centaur now. Beat season of television ever imo.

How bad do the child abuse ones get? We've already seen Zach Braff admonish orphans for losing both of their parents.
