Not sure.

My best guess is technocrats (in principle it should be workers, but usually it's technocrats) deciding on what gets made rather than letting markets or capital flows decide.

It usually boils down to trying to control the economy rather than letting the economy control itself.

not fully related to the topic but also didn't merit it's own topic I guess. look into it, the rabbit hole leads to computational linguistics anyway.

Yeah I know what you mean...

When I finished high school I never really had any plan for my life so I just enrolled in community college because it was just something that was easy to get into and a solution that I told myself would just let me fall into a better opportunity. I was never really an intellectual person so a liberal arts program was probably a dumb idea. I met a girl not long after that and she was really into reading and arts and stuff like that, and I liked her a lot because I thought she was pretty and smart I guess. So eventually I started copying all her hobbies, and my friends would all hang out at my house but basically I only cared that she would come around. It was so stupid because I was surrounded by a bunch of cool people by would regularly sell them out in exchange for her attention, and did a lot of things to get her attention. So anyway basically I built this whole character out of loving literature and being intellectual, and I became a pompous ass who thought he was better than everyone because I was just so smart. I always was kind of overconfident for no reason, but in high school I was really shy so that side of me only came out when I was really comfortable around people. I think all my college friends knew exactly what was going on and thought it was pretty funny, so really the joke was on me.

Eventually we all drifted apart but a part of me never let go of my picture of myself as an intellectual. But as soon as that girl was more or less out of the picture, I started reading less and less and things only became a surface level interest. I was also diagnosed with schizophrenia at the the time which didn't really help but that's not the point I guess. Anyway now there was this part of me who had sold himself out to all his friends in exchange for some sham pursuit of wisdom, but even then some of them stuck around. After community college, I majored in philosophy because that girl was still kind of in the picture and she went to the same school and that was also her major. She ended up not attending for those years, not sure why, but I still cringe at the thought that if we were to go together I would have probably suffocated her with my presence.

When I was 14 this friend of mine said I was like a puppy. It's kind of true because I have this bad habit of following people around and I have no real opinions of my own, I just either agree with people or take the opposite view depending on how I feel about them. So now I'm in university, mentally ill, and just way out of my element and I didn't really do that well, but I guess I improved a lot and by the time I was done I was waaaaay more mature than when I started, but I wouldn't say I had a good head on my shoulders by the end of it.

Back to intellectualism, basically that never left but since that was a personality I adopted to impress a girl, and was never quite authentic, I think I'm doomed to never be truly intellectual, or will never be able to approach the subject without some level of superficiality. At best it will be a decent parlour trick or a well placed reference for people in the know. This eats me alive because now the girl is gone, but I still have all these books that I buy to keep up the charade. I think a lot of the reason I don't read or write, or study something, now, is because there's no one left to impress. There is just the vague feeling that maybe if I stick with it, some girl, or even just a potential friend will come along, and we can bond over that subject. I'll probably never make a great discovery or anything, or even learn something new because my love of wisdom and learning was burned into me for the wrong reason. It never belonged to me and probably never will.

Even when I was in my graduate program, I basically adopted the identity of the subject matter. I am a chameleon with no soul. There is a little bit a positive note here since even though I was in grad school for something that just seemed like a path to stability, my faux intellectualism stayed with me- so I always made a point to say "well, my true passion is philosophy, I'm just here for a job". But even that is a double edged sword because it's still just me using that persona as a way of impressing people. But at least it was still a part of me, I don't know.

I feel pretty messed up about it because the last 10 years of my life have been nothing but me donning a fancy cap with a feather in it, so I can tip my hat to anyone I meet. But no one even gives a fuck and yet I continue in that manner. It's weird when you have an identity that isn't really yours, because a lot of your actions aren't your own either. Ever plan I come up with is some dumbass scheme that I think will bring me happiness, but it's always the same: I'll use my brain power to impress everyone.

At some level I really care about this shit, I like to think. But it's doomed to never making substantive progress because that part of my life essentially was the resulting of someone else's personality. Folie a deux, I guess, is what it is, because one person's madness becomes another's obsession.

I think every man in the world has two virginities,if you really think about it. There is the girl you first have sex with and then there is the girl that brings to life some part of you that isn't really yours, but you adopt it for her sake. I guess for some people they get over that part of them. But for me, I wouldn't say it ruined my life, because even was I was young it was clear I'd not amount to much, though I never really got past it and I still cling to things that I feel I'm doing because I think it would impress someone like the girl that I mentioned at the start.

It's not like video gaming where I can just do it peacefully and don't need to make a show of it, I think. Socially hobbies really are horrible- I don't mean hobbies that are social I just mean hobbies that people like to share. Because you can't enjoy them unless there is someone to enjoy it with, and then if it's something no one cares about, the suddenly you barely care about it either. And with intellectual pursuits like philosophy, well, I want to care about it, but I'm probably only caring about it because I feel like it might impress someone, which I think I've made clear by now. But maybe I can learn to care about it for my own sake. I don't know. I guess it doesn't help that philosophy is pretty useless as it is.

Women want the total package when it comes to guys, which is whatever, I guess. Slay, queen.

Guys usually want attractiveness though, but cast a much wider net anyway because most of us are pretty desperate these days.

Not sure which one is ultimately more shallow. Dating is a trash heap.

Edit: I didn't really answer the question, but the answer is both care about looks. But for women that is a part of an equation that can be mitigated by other factors and for men, a lot will just compromise anyway.

Personally I find Science of Logic is a lot easier to read than the Phenomenology, especially the Lesser Logic (condensed version), which is written as an encyclopedia. I would probably say start there.

Edit: Sadler is pretty great, that would be a good secondary source if you just want to dive into the Phenomenology directly. I dont have a lot of experience with secondary sources for Hegel though, unfortunately.
