Most people dont know what's going on there because it is a small country that has virtually no effect on the world. China is a global power so of course people are more likely to care and have opinions. But it's moot because a lot of non profits are actively working in Myanmar anyway

You can find atrocity everywhere and it's absurd to expect people to "actually care" about everything going on.

I think most people have been socialized to have transphobic tendencies. That's why so many seem deeply ingrained in their ignorance. I think educating oneself and being exposed to transpeople can chip off that subconscious transphobia.

I meant to say that it might be the case someone has a trans friend and the subject in question is just naturally transphobic, I guess i'm worrying about microagressions, which I am critical of the possibility of unlearning in some cases. idk. I know it's on me to do better in this respect but that doesn't mean it's super easy to completely know when I'm behaving improperly, especially if it's in a group that is just... Not very open to discussing that stuff in a serious manner.

also TC what is your take on the fact that women are generally doing better than men these days, sexual objects or not? better education and better careers. they seem to have an easier time with independence. i think that is part of why it's actually hard to be a woman now, they need to have amazing lives or else they're not living up to the standard.

Men are never as much of a joke as women.

Even drunkards that spend all their time at a bar are seen as "fathers" or "dads". Women who don't come home and abandon their kids are trash as far as society is concerned - not even worth a home.

China got to where they are today by stealing IP from capitalist companies. USSR just plain fucked themselves and dissolved the country.

i'm not talking about contemporary history... i'm just talking about a level of industrial capacity and modernization. things like railways and factories, a major financial or technological sector; things that are basically requirements for powerful countries to get to the point of where they are today. historically that generally seem to require either a massive sacrifice of human capital (gulags, purges, slavery, colonization) or just being in the same vicinity as wealthy countries so you can benefit from proximate trading wealth (in some ways this accounts for countries like Japan, Taiwan, South Korea- that was largely dependent on American intervention, iirc).

i literally don't understand why you wandered in this topic just to say that. China and Russia were both backwater agrarian countries before becoming communist, and they became industrial powers with major urban centers while they were communist (tbf i'm not as sure of this when it comes to China. but it's definitely true for Russia.), even if they're not or mostly not communist anymore. I say this and fully accept that the means were brutal and tragic: I wouldn't want something like that to happen again even if it meant a great leap forward, so to say.

i think you mean to say industrialization, urbanization and modernization have pretty high death counts. it's pretty hard to separate a lot of communist nations historically from those concepts. by and large capitalist nations had slaves and empires which took the brunt of the brutality.

Were we to somehow liquidate the wealth of the entire planet, and equally distribute the resulting $37000 or so each to everyone, we'd be right back to rampant weath disparity within a decade.

i am talking more about infrastructure and housing, not necessarily equally distributing the sum total of wealth. i'm not saying everyone has to make an equal amount of money, in fact i'm more or less fine with wealth disparity (though i am less fine with property disparity, i think it's a shame that land ownership is kind of a non-concept these days, but there are a lot more people...). it would be nice if everyone had a cell phone, clean water, and a toilet. it's doable.

in terms of food, this sounds fucking crazy but i think the concept of food needs to be done away with entirely. humans have a very intimate relationship with food and it is the backbone of many cultures, sure, but how we are not all subsisting on efficiently produced powder or pills in 2020 is beyond me.

Scarcity doesn't really have any solution, just various theories of management.

it's doesn't have a practical (read: profitable) solution. if private citizens could plunder corporate wealth in the same way corporations plunder the planet and citizenry, there would probably be more equality economically.

you hate to see it, i guess, but the only solution to global poverty would be a planned and concerted effort to end it, which is essentially communistic at the most basic level. ironically this would also give a shitton of people jobs and something worthwhile to do, but it's fucking hard and people might lose money as a result so why bother.
