yeah, this comes from you having this misguided notion that the greater benefit to society is universally considered good by all. most people who do things that you or I would consider evil they don't think of themselves as evil. not everyone has the same moral compass as you and just chooses to be evil. it comes from them disagreeing with your way of thinking. scar doesn't think he has a moral obligation to benefit the pack -- he thinks there is nothing wrong with looking after himself above others.

Lawful is honestly the easiest one to distinguish. Neutral vs Chaotic is where it gets trickier to me. Best I can determine is neutral is primarily driven by self interest or by an active desire to achieve neutrality and will act lawfully or chaotically from situation to situation depending on its interaction with the world as a whole. Chaotic is actively whimsical and will do whatever catches their fancy at the time. I feel like those two tend to have the most overlap, though I would say chaotic good is more likely to do "stupid heroic things" than neutral good.

chaotic people are supposed to be actively opposed to lawful people. for example I'd consider myself chaotic since I don't think 'lawful good' can actually exist. I think anyone who calls themself 'lawful good' is probably lawful evil, or maybe lawful neutral at best.

obviously I'm not neutral because I have feelings directly opposed to lawful ways of thinking.

neat. also I'll mention that 3 of my 4 favorites (Aku no Hana, Boku wa Mari no Naka, and Onani Master Kurosawa) all have a lot of very similar elements. two of them are actually written by the same author. so if you do like ""Flowers of Evil"" in the end, it's definitely worth looking into the other ones listed there.

Harem End is something I think normals should stay away from at all costs, but I posted it as part of my overall rankings just cause I figured I'd list all of my top stuff (and in case anyone else other than you was lurking the topic in search of manga recs)

Oh look another badass monster chick who they make into a white lady in every single one of her splash arts. This must be Riot's signature move. Pretty cool looking overall, and even my hatred for dragons isn't enough to drag her ranking down very much because her design is fairly awesome.

Championship Shy is notable one of the better looking alternate skins, but it would be so much better if every other skin wasn't "let's turn her into a normal looking human." Her ingame model looks pretty lanky and lithe despite the fact that her splash art makes her come across as a more imposing character, but whatever.

Overall pretty good stuff. Not sure if Shyvana was the other one people thought was going to break into the top tier, but I'll say she's not quite that good. There's even some more human looking characters I think are better. Having more cool monster splash arts would have helped her ranking but sadly...

Singed


I don't particularly love or hate this design. Singed is very middle of the pack for me. He's kinda ugly looking but that's not super related to his concept. He's a mad scientist but he doesn't have any particularly defining features so he's just sort of a normal dude that's smart because the lore tells you that he's smart.

Basically just some dracula looking guy with a bandaid over his mouth.

I think I actually recommended you the anime in a similar topic in the past, now that you mention it. didn't know if you had watched it or not. anyway, um, the manga is definitely better and it actually covers a ton of material more (like I think the anime only covers around 1/3 or 1/2 of the story)

also I'll second Mac's recommendation of Cat Street. it's not among my favorites anymore (pushed out of the top of the list by better materials), but it's probably my favorite pure shoujo manga that I've read.

best manga I've read:

aishiteruze baby; highschool boy raises his niece after his sister skips town

aku no hana; troubled teenagers struggle in a world where they feel no one else identifies with them

boku wa mari no naka; not your typical body swap manga

bokurano; children are forced to defend earth by fighting in a giant robot, only this time there's a twist...

death note; I think everyone knows what death note is. my appreciation for this series goes up every time I re-read it, until the point it became one of my 10/10 series

hana to hoshi; best short shoujo ai that I've read. if you're not into girl on girl romance, skip it


harem end; a twisted but very unique horror story from the master of gore. in my opinion, his best work. has really creative premises both in the main story and the included short stories -- pretty standard for shintaro kago -- but I think this is the one where he executed it flawlessly.

onani master kurosawa; honestly the premise of this sounds way more dumb than the story really is, so all I can say is just go read it.

shinigami no ballad; short stories about a god of death helping people in the world of the living reconcile with passings.

the top four are in bold

some other really good stuff that's worth checking out for its uniqueness or other factors, even if I don't consider it to be top tier on its own:

Alien Nine; great science fiction story which seems a bit cutesy on the surface but is a bit more twisted than it seems at first. notable because of the authors love for western sci-fi, and I think he does a good job of blending eastern and western styles together into a totally unique and masterful product.

Angel Densetsu; a very ugly character is judged harshly for his appearance, but truthfully has a heart of gold. this is about him finding his place in the world.

Fraction; the second best work by shintaro kago, mentioned above. all of what I said about Harem End applies here, but Fraction isn't quite as good.

Kon no Ki Konoha; a sad but cute short story, only one chapter long. used to be one of my favorites when I initially read it, and it has a very unique premise. as I read more and more manga there just wasn't enough room at the very top of the list for everything and it got pushed down.

out of these, I think only Death Note is in shounen jump

honorable mention:

Shingeki no Kyojin (Attack on Titan) will almost certainly end up on that first list when it finishes, but since it's not a completed series I haven't moved it up there yet.

And on the complete opposite side of the scale from Riven, if you told me a character was named Rumble I don't think I would ever guess that it was a cat wearing goggles. Him riding around and fighting inside of a mecha is pretty cool. Not bad.

Ryze


Old dude who used so much magic that he turned purple or something. Honestly this feels like one of the first designs in a while that I'm not super into. Also I kinda thing his amish beard is pretty lame.

Sejuani


A mounted fighter, which is a pretty cool concept. Not only that, but it's not even some lame ass horse or something; she's riding some kind of giant snow beast! The best thing about Sejuani's design is how seamlessly it works with other types of skins. The sabretusk one looks different from her base concept while still being unique and looking really cool.

I have no idea if Sejuani is any good or not, but assuming you can ride around on a giant beast and smack people with a flail this is 100% the type of character I'd probably want to at least try playing around with almost immediately. And wow I'm actually ranking someone based on gameplay for once!



Manages to beat her SWORN ENEMY (I think?) Lissandra in placement, and comfortably rise to join the other top tier human looking females. Although she's apparently some other non-human race like a frost person or whatever, this isn't good enough to place above the likes of Riven and Miss Fortune.

Advance apology for those who like this guy but evil jester/evil clown is probably one of the tropes I consider more lame than almost anything else that gets so overdone as much as it gets overdone. Don't really have much else to say other than; "Welcome to the bottom tier!"

So he's basically the ninja from Strider. I will fairly place him around the same range as Akali, because ninjas are basically similarly cool no matter what you really do with them. To say that another way, there's not much you can do to set them apart. Akali will rank a bit higher because she has really sexy eyes.

This guy would probably fare better if he was a direct ripoff of THE SHREDDER from ninja turtles, though.

Another cool ass looking monster in this batch, Rengar, if I'm not mistaken, seems to roam around the battlefield in camoflague and then jump on enemies with swift and deadly attacks. For some reason I'm picturing this toy I used to have as a kid that was some kind of lion warrior or lion knight type dude. I had a bunch of other small knight action figures and I'd make them fight against the lion guy. I can't for the life of me remember what kind of set this was based on or what the lion guy might have actually been from. Was he from a cartoon? Something else? Totally original?

Anyway, I digress. Rengar is pretty cool but out of curiosity I decided to think about how he ranks compared to the other monsters in this batch. He's definitely not as great as Renekton, but I do like him more than Rek'Sai. Expect him to place between those two... and probably below any hot female characters within the range. He's definitely not cool enough to surpass the 'sex appeal' factor within his own tier.

(Hilariously, looking at the list: Kalista was right there...)

Riven


Riven the Exile is about one of the most "expected" names you could possibly give to a character with this design. Just... amazing. I have no idea if this was intentional tongue-in-cheek character design or an utterly clueless blunder.



Something about her base design reminds me a bit of Lightning, I think it's the plain white skirt with the belt wrapped around it. I've also been playing Final Fantasy XIII lately. Uh, it's kind of funny that she looks a bit like Lightning, though, because she also is clearly using a giant ass buster sword -- an item familiarly belonging to another character that looks quite a bit like Lightning.



Similar to Lightning, she's pretty hot, which means I don't care as much whether she's actually a cool character or not. That bunnygirl outfit alone secured her a LeBlanc tier placement...

Imagine being this shallow. In all seriousness, though, hot or not, I do think her design is pretty cool. I dunno, maybe I am influenced here, but apparently she's a badass warlord who tried to conquer the entire world or something, which is definitely something I relate to.

Haha, not gonna lie, I actually kinda like this little design quite a bit. Reminds me of Tort from Shining Force 2, with a bit of a chubby/cartoonized ninja turtles vibe. His Full metal Rammus skin looks legit. Definitely within the category of robots that I think are well designed and look awesome. His base design is good enough to secure him a high ranking as well. It's Tort!

Also he can curl up into a ball and roll around the battlefield. Enough said.

Rek'Sai


Yes, I did find out that Rek'Sai was female before I started this write up. Probably saved me some editing to go back and do later. Although I likely just wasted the exact same amount of effort typing up these three lines. She's a fast melee character who can jump in and attack targets directly while being durable enough to not die instantly.

By now you guys know how I feel about cool ass monster designs. This one is fairly cool but not among the best shown so far. Solid middle ranking, maybe a bit on the higher end once I start comparing her directly to some of the mid tier guys.

Renekton


Giant crocodile dude who hangs around in sand for some reason. I'm not gonna question that last part, but crocs are basically dinosaurs, and dinosaurs are awesome as hell. Lizardmen aren't my favorite type of monsters, but Renekton is honestly at or even ABOVE the max level of what I think a good lizardman design would look like, so I really have no complaints there. Another high ranking mid tier character.

His weapon is literally a giant hacksaw. Though it'd be even cooler if he just grabbed enemies, crushed them, and smashed them to pieces in his powerful dinosaur-tier jaws.

Quinn


Quinn is a some kind of ranger or hunter, and the only character on this list whose name starts with Q. She is just a normal human but she has a pet eagle that assists her in the field. Eagles are one of the more badass raptors, and raptors are among the most badass categories of animals period. Honestly I like her appearance and her design quite a bit. I didn't think we'd get any more purely human characters that were high tier, especially since they were pretty rare early on and then we had a decent number of them all at once. But, even still, I do feel like Quinn is good enough to rank with the best of them.

Rakan


A guy who likes to walk around shirtless most of the time, blasting it bare-chested as often as legally allowed to do so. He's apparently some kind of made up furry race that I don't feel very familiar with. Also confusing that there's actually a second character in his original splash art. Feels like the only one to have that so far, even if I've seen other alternate splashes that had a few characters in them.

His design is just pretty average, maybe somewhat cool. Slightly above average, I guess. One thing that I might have overlooked if I didn't check into him a little bit more are the cool visual effects that seem to be related to him using his powers and abilities. Honestly I think those are enough to make me like him even just a little bit more, I think they have a really neat style to them.

Just put on a shirt already, would you?

I basically hate it. driving on long open roads isn't too bad but the more traffic there is the more anxious I get. and I'm the type of person who doesn't get anxious very often or very easily so it's difficult for me to deal with it in cases like this when I do rarely experience that.

A half dwarf half goat dude who can apparently forge his own gear anywhere on the battlefield or something. I have no idea what are the benefits of this playstyle but it does sound pretty impressive. His overall design is cool; very stout, very strong, awesome horns, insane beard -- good beard, not a hipster beard. Good stuff.

Pantheon


Definitely just a regular dude pretending to be a more badass spirit of war or something else. I bet if he took if his helmet you'd find out he's just sort of ugly underneath there. The spear + shield fighting style is something that is effective, but boring. Eh, not a fan. Lower section of the list.

Poppy


Okay I look at Poppy's design and it does not scream "keeper of the hammer" to me. Looks like another Yordle, but definitely among the less offensive ones. A character using a giant badass hammer bigger than their body is pretty inherently cool. Of course this runs into issues with the fact that she's just tiny and the hammer is normal size. Oh, they just took the 'character with giant hammer' cliche and made it into a little animal person. She's the same as every other Yordle, isn't she?

Before someone brings it up: Yes I have seen what I think must be her classic design and oh man does it look ATROCIOUS. Actually I generally look up all of the splash arts and designs for the characters, so I'm not sure why people keep assuming that I haven't seen the older arts, but normally I have unless I don't care about the character at all and I just gloss over them. This has nothing to do with Poppy, but, fun fact, I guess!

Pyke the ripper. Cool design, cool concept, him being undead just adds to his coolness. I have no complaints here, and he'll probably rank high tier, but I don't have much else to say behind that. I just really love the aesthetics of his whole theme and gear. It feels very cohesive and it works really well.

Nunu & Willump


Another character that is actually two characters together. Apparently Nunu & Willump is literally some young dude riding around on a yeti. I... have no problems with that. Honestly the monster design on the yeti is actually pretty sick despite being more on the cartoony side of things. I don't know if these characters have really gotten better or if I've just been in a better mood lately but this is another good one.

Olaf


Olaf the Berserker is about as basic of a name as you can possibly give to a character. Like holy shit even if I didn't look at his splash art, I could read that name and know EXACTLY what this character is and probably predict his design with about 80% accuracy at worst. Not as bad as some of the other really cliche character designs, such as Gangplank, I actually find this guy to be a little bit cool in spite of what I said above. Solid mid tier.

Orianna


A steampunk style robot, which is on the lower end of my favored types of robots. Although I do like robots quite a bit so that's still a somewhat positive angle. Unlike some previous characters I've ranked I will say that she benefits a bit from her skins that try to make her look more human. I think some of her other designs, where she looks robotic, just rely too much on an overall clunk physiology and build. Like, the structure of her body, is just clunky and unappealing to me. Covering more of that up is a nice trade off for giving her a more human looking face.

The overall character concept is somewhat cool, but I think there's much better things they could have done with it.

Using an anchor as a weapon is badass. It's hard to tell how giant this "titan" is really supposed to be since the characters mostly look the same size in game. Uh, definitely the coolest robot so far, and I say that as someone who likes robots quite a bit but hasn't liked any of the ones featured on the list before now.

Neeko


Hey, look, I said I'd remember to rank Neeko and I did! Anyway I think her design is pretty cool and her concept are pretty cool. I almost wish I DIDN'T watch her reveal trailer because it does give me more info than I got on many of the others... but on the other hand I can also say I found her voice acting to be especially hammy and bad, which did end up ranking against her.

Probably the most interesting thing about Neeko is that I don't find her attractive or ugly, just kind of whatever. So she's probably one of the few female characters where her attractiveness doesn't influence her ranking at all -- although her "looks" do in the sense that I think she has a cool design. Amphibians are some of my favorite types of animals and so an amphibian based monster-humanoid is awesome.

Nidalee


Not going to lie, I liked Nidalee a lot more before I knew she was a panther or whatever. She's one of the characters I knew a little bit about (well, mostly just her design) before I started this topic and I had her pegged as one of the higher ranking characters. While that's still mostly true, I think finding out she was secretly a furry in disguise 'somewhat' hurt her rankings.

That being said this entire batch of characters all placed extremely well and so honestly saying that her ranking was hurt really just means she's not at the absolute top. And, hey, not everyone can be up there!

A lot of her skins are also pretty whatever, most of them being strictly worse than just her base concept and design.

Nocturne


This guys title is literally THE ETERNAL NIGHTMARE. One of the best I've seen since Aatrox. But can we talk about how goofy and unimposing his ingame model looks? His head is just a round orb, lol. ORB!

That being said he looks like pretty fucking badass. Nocture rounds out the trend of this last batch of characters being incredibly high quality. Man we haven't had a TRULY bad one since the letter 'G' and we're all the way on 'N' now.
