Thompson's obituary for Richard Nixon and holy shit he throws it down. Some people will say that words like scum and rotten are wrong for Objective Journalism -- which is true, but they miss the point. It was the built-in blind spots of the Objective rules and dogma that allowed Nixon to slither into the White House in the first place. He looked so good on paper that you could almost vote for him sight unseen. He seemed so all-American, so much like Horatio Alger, that he was able to slip through the cracks of Objective Journalism. You had to get Subjective to see Nixon clearly, and the shock of recognition was often painful. Seems applicable today...! I applied to 5-10 schools both for undergrad and for my PhD and never once had to do an interview. They're a thing (or at least were a thing 10 years ago when I applied?) for undergrad at the top private schools. I didn't have to interview for the one public school to which I applied. For grad school I'm under the impression that it varies by field. Honestly though there's a ton of subjective bullshit in college admissions that has nothing to do with race, though. For example, admissions essays are typically weighted very heavily (which is what I think sunk my apps to the top tier schools; looking back on them they were not great). There's also a lot of emphasis in many colleges on "building a class" where they want a diversity of interests, etc. --- Congrats to BKSheikah for winning the BYIG Guru Challenge! |
