Yep it is sounding like Wagner will continue on as a PMC (Russian government wanted to make them part of the army from July on) with full legal immunity for everything. Also sounds like Defence Minister Shoigu and Military Chief of Staff Gerasimov are out. In other words they gave Wagner everything they wanted lol.

And Prigozhin says they are turning back (they had effectively reached the outskirts of Moscow). Sounds like they made a de-escalation deal, or in other words Putin capitulated. Also while all this was happening Ukraine crossed the Dnipro.

Looks like Ukraine has taken areas outside Krasnohorivka held by Russia since 2014. Big movements thanks to the Wagner rebellion.

Speaking of which it sounds like they will be in Moscow in a couple of hours. The mayor just advised no travel and suspended all events for a week. Hard to imagine them not getting there now.

Wagner have also reportedly taken all military sites in Voronezh, about 300 miles/500 kilometres from Moscow outside of which MoD forces are setting up defensive lines. Additionally there is footage of civilians helping Wagner troops.

Guess its time to revive this topic.

First of all we need to mention the Russian invasion of Russia, when Russian rebels sympathetic to Ukraine invaded Belgorod. Ukraine have also made strikes into Russia now as well.

More importantly the counter-offensive has begun and Ukraine seem to be advancing.

Russia has continued to advance in Bakhmut but at a very slow pace. One of the Russian generals who was fired has now returned indicating yet another shakeup in command and ongoing tensions there. Also there was a big prisoner exchange for Orthodox Easter. That about covers it.

Bakhmut has all but ground to a halt, though Russia are now attacking Avdiivka, a town in Donetsk very close to where the initial 2014 frontline is. Apparently Ukraine are buying time for their next big counteroffensive in the spring. That is basically the extent of it.

Amazing show, one of the best of the year.

I just watched the latest episode and only want to say that this show is still great.

B2EMO bummed me out here.

The argument for it being a Ukrainian missile is that it is an air defence missile that misfired. Remember, this is just 8km from the border. Whoever is behind it (most likely Russia) this was certainly an accident.

Ukraine are winning.

Ukraine have retaken Kherson. Hugely important as it was the only regional capital Russia have taken since invading.

It might not necessarily be Star Wars-related, it could be for Willow or Indiana Jones. Although I do doubt well see anything from Indiana Jones until that movie finally releases next year, Willow is possible as that series is coming out. However, its probably for Visions season 2.

Anyway, incredible episode of Andor, the best yet. My partner who had been cooler on the series until now got really into the prison break then was completely distraught at the reveal that Kino couldnt swim.

I was briefly with the same local talent agency as Dean-Charles Chapman when he was getting started and grew up in the same town. I never met him but everybody was super proud of him there.

I think releasing it in batches (1-3,4-6,7,8-10,11-12) would make sense as the story arcs are clearly paced that way. However I think each episode has a tonne to chew on. Definitely more than the typical episode of a genre show.

Anyway, that episode was great, best mid-arc episode of the lot. The Bix scene near the start has to be the darkest live action Star Wars moment ever. I was genuinely upset.

New episode day bump. I wont be able to watch it until tomorrow though.

So it turns out that reviewers have now seen ip to episode 10. Apparently episode 10 is as good as 6 which A) is awesome and B) reinforces my theory that episode 10 will be the prison break. Exciteddd

All caught up on Andor.

This show is great! So much depth to every moment and the acting is top-notch. I loved the Saw moment where he just lists all the different competing rebel ideologies, it added a lot in a little. I also loved the Yularen scene discussing PORD, all the nasty things you know the Empire had been waiting to implement but just needed an excuse.

I think next episode is more prison stuff, episode 10 is the prison break and episodes 11 and 12 will concern the various factions trying to kill Andor which will end up with him joining the rebels.

Finished episode 6, I absolutely loved that.

Finally started watching this, up to episode 4 and absolutely loving it. I can see how somebody who was very into the prior Star Wars series might not as it is very, very different. Not everything will vibe for everybody and thats totally okay. The last thing anybody should want is for Star Wars to become like Star Trek where despite having this vast canvas to tell all different sorts of stories, fans only demand a very particular style. That willingness to be different was a strength of The Last Jedi, one of the best Star Wars films, but that still ultimately hewed to Star Wars traditions, this goes much, much further outside the box than that film ever did.

Anyway, on the show itself. I really liked the first three, but it was episode four that sold me fully on the show. All the Coruscant scenes are some of the best worldbuilding - and character development - in this entire franchise. I especially loved the ISB scenes of internal political careerism and backstabbing. I think my favourite scene so far though is in episode 1, where the older corpo tells Karn exactly what to do and why. Of course Karn ignores him and we see things go exactly as his superior sats they would. The great irony being that Karn wanted the Empire to have a stronger presence and thats exactly what he got, at the cost of his job and several lives.

My favourite parts of Rogue One were not the battle scenes (though those were pretty great) but instead the glimpses we got at the inner workings of the Empire, the brief scenes of family life, the officers congratulating each other on the Death Star, the jostling for power. Andor is basically that as a series. Its great, though if youre after the more heroic myth side of Star Wars it is a very different show.

Well, for some reason swing voters still exist in the US despite the fact that its a binary choice between a catch-all liberal party and a religious fascist party which you would not expect to have much overlap. I think this scandal is more for them.

Also it must really be emphasised how lax American animal testing regulations are. Thanks to Bush there are enormous sweeping exceptions in the law for the vast majority of species tested on, leaving them more or less without standards of care at a federal level. That Oz still managed to violate an act that is extremely difficult to encounter by design (I believe because he was using dogs) is shocking. That is why it is notable in a US context really.

With that said, even just animal testing in this context should be scandalous because the US has next to no nationwide protections for animals. What Oz was doing even aside from the AWA violations would be scandalous in most democracies. So when you hear about animal testing you shouldnt just default to thinking its normal because it can get pretty messed up in America especially.

Just because something is done for a reason doesnt mean its good or acceptable! Oz is a crackpot also so I would be highly sceptical of any of his products.

I also work in public health and yeah, the idea of animal testing itself, while deeply unpleasant and very much open to ethical debate is common for medical research BUT it is worth noting that not only is the story as Giggs says about the malpractice, American animal protections are pretty weak as far as I am aware. So even by the standards of animal testing this is very bad!

Somewhat? It is going to be a visual dream, I saw the trailer in the cinema and it was gorgeous even though I never cared for the story. Frankly people here are seriously underestimating how wide the appeal of Avatar is outside the cynical online 30-something box. However I do have to agree with the cinema porn label which is not necessarily a flaw.

Russia was talking about joining NATO in the 90s and 2000s. That would have been a fascinating timeline.

Anyway, no way Ukraines application is accepted. NATO do not accept applicants currently at war, see Georgia and Moldova. This will however further humiliate Putin, he was offered Ukraine staying out of NATO at the start of the war and he refused it, now he is facing a Ukraine that is a NATO and EU candidate, as well as Sweden and Finland in NATO. He achieved the opposite of his stated goals.

It does seem unusually exploitative in a way that something like Mindhunter doesnt. I dont think True Crime is always bad, some of the better instances have brought killers to justice or set innocent people free. However, it should always bd done in a respectful way.

You know, this is kind of a shame. I got Cyberpunk on there A) because it worked unlike most other ways to play that game at launch B) because it came with a controller and Chromecast Ultra for free and C) it was already cheaper than elsewhere. Honestly, I had a great time with it using my month of the premium service, I played a lot of games, it worked well, and the controller is great. I got a lot of use out that in particular even when I stopped using Stadia itself. They got that service to a good place in terms of tech and actual experience. Its just a shame they tanked themselves through wanton mismanagement and Google never committing to anything.

From the sounds of it that is right - which means Putin is now committed to capturing the rest of the regions (going to be extremely difficult if not impossible) and basically pledging to be at war with Ukraine in the very long term. Ultimately the real goal of the sham referendums was internal, just removing the blocks to allow further mobilisation including of people from these regions of Ukraine and martial law. So this tracks with that, its just a way of keeping the conflict going.

So Russia has announced that it will annex Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson and Zaporzhzhia tomorrow afternoon. I have a question about this.

Russia is far from fully controlling any of these provinces. They hold about 95% of Luhansk, 80% of Kherson, and only about half of Donetsk and Zaporzhzhia. There is also a major counterattack underway in Donetsk and Luhansk and Russia are rapidly losing territory. However, it seems that theyre claiming the entire provinces anyway, despite the fact that theres no way the entirety of these regions could have possibly voted in the so-called referendums to begin with. Is that right?
