I've gotta say, I love how in chapter 5, Trails FC begins building up to a seemingly happy ending. Joshua actually bursts out laughing at something Estelle says and promises to tell her everything about his past once this is all over, as well as Estelle promising to tell Joshua how she really feels about him. It seems like Joshua's finally starting to come out of his shell a bit and then BAM. It just makes the moment that much more effective.

Well, the combat was improved to the point that you didn't have to be all that stealthy because Ezio could solo an entire battalion due to the countering system, so there was a lot more leeway not to have to be perfect. But then they also added different types of missions so that you actually had opportunities to use those new skills they kept giving you.

68. Viewtiful Joe (kateee)
5CLMYIi

Viewtiful Joe is basically the video game version of Last Action Hero, a guilty pleasure movie from my childhood. Joe is just an Average Joe who gets sucked into a movie and becomes Viewtiful Joe. I like the art style because it goes for a comic book look combined with action movie stereotypes, and it pulls it off really well. The concept of the game is very cool because Joe's powers involve speeding up and slowing down time, which you have to use not only in combat but also to get past many of the obstacles as you progress through the levels. You absolutely have to learn how to use those abilities well if you want to beat this game because it doesn't take it easy on you. You won't beat it with button mashing and dumb luck, especially against some of these bosses. It can be frustrating, but it's also a really satisfying challenge because you feel like you've earned it when you finally break through. My personal favorite boss from this game is Another Joe. That one was a lot of fun because I enjoy when games force you to fight doppelgangers of yourself.

Viewtiful Joe also has a lot of cheese and charm, as you would expect from a comic book/action movie hybrid. Perhaps the most famous is Joe's catchphrase, "Henshin a-go-go," but I have a great personal fondness for "DAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAVIDSON IS IN THE HOUSE! HULK DAVIDSON IS BORN TO BE WILD!" Davidson also makes the "What, you think you're some kind Mega Man or something?" line, so yeah, that dude is pretty great. Although perhaps the best one to me is Alastor's, "Come on! Help a brother out!" I still find myself saying that line in appropriate situations from time to time to this day. I never played the sequel or the PS2 version with Dante though. Not sure if those were any good, but the first game is a fun time.

Bonus Question: What was your favorite Viewtiful Joe boss fight?

69. Four Square (Pirateking2000)
Kxn6ILW

This was one of the biggest playground games back in elementary school. Don't get me wrong. Kickball was the king, but Four Square got a lot of play, too. I don't want to hear anyone trying to throw Dodgeball into the mix here because that was a gym game, not a playground game. Keep your facts straight! Anyway, Four Square is such serious business that it has its own blog (squarefour.org if you're interested) with just about all the information you could ever possibly want about the game, including the "official" set of rules they use for leagues and tournaments. You can play it a bunch of different ways though, including with more than four squares, despite the name. It's very flexible, but the basic concept is always the same. In this game, your goal is to de-throne the person in the top spot and eventually become the king (or queen) yourself. If you get knocked out, you have to endure the shame of going to the back of the line and let rage fuel you until you can get back onto the court.

The secret to becoming a Four Square master is learning how to put spin on the ball because players expect the ball to bounce a certain way, and they often can't react fast enough to get it if it does something they aren't prepared for. I've been able to enjoy long reigns at the top square due to my mad spinning skills. The game becomes really frantic though once people start to catch on and figure out the key to Four Square, and it's super fun. It's one of those games that's easily accessible for anyone to play because you don't have to be athletic (although you do need to at least have some hand-eye coordination), and it can be fun even at a low skill level, but it can get really crazy if everyone playing it is good.

Bonus Question: What was your favorite playground game?

Conversely, the DS remake isnt great, but also gets overhated by its detractors.

Maybe KP won't like Lufia II, but I think it's a good game worth playing and it needs people to hype it up.

I actually liked how neat the Anton one was because you rarely see random NPCs used that way in a game.

The one I'd have never gotten is the previous one that you can only get during the stealth mission (which I "successfully" did without getting caught thanks to abusing saves) because I wouldn't have guessed there was something to get during that segment.

then I've got good news for you

Lufia II has all enemies on the map and you can literally avoid all encounters if you wish because enemies only move when you do

the game also gives you abilities to "stun" enemies so you can move past them without triggering a fight

70. Assassins Creed: Brotherhood (Johnbobb)
zrbGupb

First of all, I really liked the Assassin's Creed games I've played, even the original, which from what I can tell isn't well regarded. A large part of the appeal for me is all the parkour, climbing everything in sight, synching with the environment around you, using Eagle Vision to spot enemies, and stealth killing targets. The Ezio trilogy was great because I'm a big fan of Ezio himself. I think he's a really fascinating character because you get three games with him at different phases of his life. You follow him literally from birth to death, and it's a satisfying journey across those three games. I haven't played an Assassin's Creed game since then though because I got burned out with four games in four years. I already own 3 and 4, so I just need to motivate myself to play them.

That being said, Brotherhood is probably my least favorite of the three, perhaps mostly because they put less emphasis on the story in favor of recruiting assassins and exploring Rome. I didn't care much about all the recruitment stuff, other than being able to sic them on people so you don't have to get your hands dirty, which was great. Rome was a cool location, which goes without saying. Getting to scale famous landmarks like the Colosseum is a really neat experience. While the story wasn't as good in Brotherhood as it was in the other two Ezio games, it does have one great moment in particular at the very end. I'm not going to spoil it, but you know what it is if you've played it because the shock value of it all was excellent. Unfortunately, Revelations mostly ignored the implications of it and didn't really follow up on it. I assume later games at least do SOMETHING with all of that, but I have no idea because I'm usually pretty good at keeping myself from getting spoiled.

Perhaps my favorite aspect of the Ezio games is the Assassin Tombs. Those things are a blast. I love trying to figure out how to solve them. It's an oddly fulfilling combination of puzzles, parkour, and platforming. They were called Lairs of Romulus in Brotherhood, but for all intents and purposes, they're the same thing. I don't know if the later games have these, but I will sorely miss them and I doubt I'll like them as much as the Ezio games if they don't. They're that much fun to me.

Bonus Question: What is your favorite Assassin's Creed game?

71. Super Mario 64 (Pirateking2000)
k3DKMAZ

Like Mario 1, the revolutionary effect of Mario 64 has been discussed to death and is unquestioned, so I won't spend time talking about that. It's easy to say that if you played this game at the time it came out, there was nothing like it (which is true). The weird thing for me is that I actually didn't own Mario 64 until several years after its release. My cousin next door owned the game, so if I ever wanted to play it, I'd go over there or I'd borrow it and bring it home. I remember he specifically invited me over to help him beat the final Bowser fight because he couldn't do it (I was 10 and he was 8 or 9, for the record). I was so nervous I was literally shaking when it got down to the last hit because you couldn't just cheese it anymore by luring Bowser to the edge right in front of a bomb, somersault over him, grab him, and just let go. You actually had to throw him and land a precision hit. I messed up the first few tries because I didn't throw him far enough, so I eventually just spun him around literally as fast as I could rotate the stick. However, I accidentally released him in the wrong direction...only for him to hit the bomb on the exact opposite end of the arena, and that's how I beat Mario 64 for the first time. I'll never forget that moment.

Anyway, as far as the levels go, my absolute favorite is Tick Tock Clock. This is the closest Mario 64 feels to a pure platformer, especially if you don't enter at the right time to freeze all the clockwork. It can get crazy, and I love it. Other favorites include Lethal Lava Land, Cool, Cool Mountain, and Tall, Tall Mountain (Mario 64 is fond of repeating adjectives for naming its mountains, I guess). The two mountains have slides, and I love the slide Stars in this game. The inside of the volcano in Lethal Lava Land is really fun, too. The worst level is Shifting Sand Land, hands down. Whether it's that friggin' buzzard or the overabundance of quicksand, this place sucks. It's probably the only level I outright dislike (not a fan of Tiny-Huge Island either, but it's not terrible), so Mario 64's average quality is pretty solid.

Bonus Question: What's your favorite and least favorite level in Mario 64?
