You can check it as much as you want but by nature the short-term fluctuations are completely pointless to worry about or obsess over unless you're approaching retirement age. If you're 30 years old and the principle of your investment is down then you have 30 years for it to go back up. In fact, in theory you should prefer it being down earlier in your career so that you buy in at lower prices.

With that being said, I've heard horror stories of people who have no idea what they're invested in and never looked at their 401k for years or decades and discover it was sitting in a money market account the whole time, missing decades of compounding growth. So you should at least check it enough that you don't do something like that.

I'm not sure everyone understood the ramifications of Scalia's Supreme Court seat being on the ballot. At the very least it would've been a 5-4 Democrat majority for the first time in years. Kennedy might or might not have resigned still, possibly making it 6-3 in Democrats favor. Ginsburg would've likely resigned under a Clinton administration, making it an even longer-term 6-3 majority. And women's and LGBT rights would've been more secure for the foreseeable decade or two. That can be the difference between one presidential election.

To be honest, I'm not sure most Americans understand how the SC works in general, which is a terrifying thing.

The incompetence of the Browns as a franchise is almost outlandish. And the sadder thing is that despite the consistently terrible decision-making, I'm reluctant to think of them as like a "lovable loser" type of franchise either. Like at least Lions fans always know how fucked up their team is. Browns organization and Browns fans have this weird thing where they defend the incompetence as long as they can, which then acts like a feedback loop causing them to double-down on their incompetence.

There were, and even now still are, people trying to defend the team on Watson. It's wavered over time as more allegations come in but for a while Browns fans were reluctant to admit the organization made one of football's worst ever trade decisions. And even before Watson it's been confusing how cultish Cleveland was on Mayfield, an objectively "okay" quarterback. To the point they'd rather blame receivers like fucking OBJ for dragging Mayfield down before accepting that Mayfield isn't really particularly great. It's like the entire city of Cleveland insists on dying upon the hill of mediocrity.

Someone needs to teach her about loan consolidation and deferment

Derwood posted...
Hence my comment about loan consolidation
Loan consolidation doesn't lower the interest you'll pay. Loan refinancing does. Loan consolidation is just bundling your student loans into one loan so that you have one payment to make at one interest rate, which is weighted proportionally based on the loans you're consolidating. Loan refinancing is basically finding someone who will pay off your loan and give you a new one at a lower interest rate. But with that being said, there are still some more intangible drawbacks to loan refinancing too. Most borrowers have student loans that are at least partially, if not all, federal student loans. When you refinance a federal loan you're turning it into a private loan and losing the federal protections the loan had. Which means you no longer have access to federal loan forgiveness programs like PSLF or other income-driven repayment plans. Or for example, it means you wouldn't be get the interest freeze and payment deferral that the Biden administration keeps extending.

Pulling your investments out now when the market is down is literally the opposite of what you should be doing. If anything, you should put more money in right now. Stocks are effectively on sale.

The fundamental principle of investing is buy low / sell high, but this is mentally hard for people to do because it requires you buy when the rest of the market is selling and sell when the rest of the market is buying. There are horror stories of panicky people doing what you're suggesting in 2008-2009, selling off when their investments were plummeting and switching to safer bond investments. Then as the market recovered they watched as everyone else's portfolios rapidly grew upward while theirs stagnated and so switched to stocks again when the market was higher. That's literally buying high / selling low.

With all of that being said, if you are trying to time the market in any sense then you're playing a game assuming you know better than everyone else playing the game. And that's a difficult gamble to assume. So the best thing you should do is really just consistently contribute, not look at it, and calmly weather all of the highs and lows. This is especially true if you're still decades from retirement and pulling your investments out anyway. Broadly, the market will be higher in 20 or 30 years than it is now and it doesn't matter what ups and downs it had along the way.

I think that's the point. Large corporations jump over themselves to tell the world how much they agree with "largely popular opinion on ethical issue" and how they're fighting to end "largely unpopular opinion on ethical issue" but never take a stance until it's politically favorable. Like how in 2022 every corporation is happy to release a rainbow-themed product for you, the consumer, to buy and understand how progressive they are in supporting LGBT rights now that gay marriage is legal, but before it was legal they wouldn't be caught dead near it.

Similarly, every corporation apparently has 0 opinion on this extremely heated ethical issue. Until there's an overwhelmingly popular side to be on and then they'll say they're on that one.

GOP only had power for a couple years and were able to pack the Supreme Court and get abortion banned. But Dems cant even cancel student debt, universal healthcare or free community college.
To be clear on the Supreme Court, Republicans were able to pack it because they had the simple majority in the Senate when Scalia died and when Ginsburg died. Trump was president and Mitch controlled the Senate with a Republican majority at an exceptionally favorable time which can't be replicated unless you can find a way to induce early death in a few of the older SC judges right now.

Republicans also had the majority when Kennedy retired and could replace him with a younger conservative judge, but the same kind of thing goes for Biden replacing Breyers' more recent seat with the younger judge Jackson. The important takeaway is how powerful the executive branch's ability to nominate SC judges is, and in 2016 and even 2020 I think this was consistently understated by disillusioned voters who weren't understanding how monumental Trump winning the election could be

The Democrats have majorities in both chambers and a Democrat in the White House right now. If they wanted to, they could put those to use to legalize abortion access nationwide.
But, of course, they failed to do so every other chance they had to do this since 1973, why would they start doing something now?

Moreover, our very political system minimizes the importance of votes via gerrymandering: either via the biased drawing of House districts or already built-in, as in the Senate. Some states are so thoroughly gerrymandered it would take a supermajority of voters to kick out their Republican majorities!
So, no, I'm sorry, but voting hasn't solved this problem and it will almost certainly continue to not solve this problem. In all likelihood, it will only become less and less meaningful as the Republican supermajorities and the courts continue to undermine voting rights in carefree defiance of the popular will.
The majority the Democrats have now is so paper-thin they can't even get Manchin and Sinema to vote on routine spending bills. If you want to cast your vote aside for that reason then go ahead because you've clearly barely thought it out either way.

Again, objectively the Supreme Court would not have ruled this right now in a parallel universe where Hillary Clinton wins in 2016. Objectively, the makeup of the court would then be completely backwards and Republicans' assault on women's rights would be beaten back by decades. If you hear that, comprehend that, and still think "but there's still no point in voting though" then I think there's obviously no point in discussing it more with you either.

I'm surprised to see the sentiment being taken away from this that voting doesn't matter and it's all pointless. That's the exact opposite sentiment you should take away. Democratic voters' reluctance to vote when it matters keeps biting them, while Republican voters solidly show up to the polls every election. That reluctance is in part why Clinton just barely lost in 2016. There are other reasons she lost too, believe me. But in an alternate reality where Democrats solidly vote and Clinton wins, then Clinton chooses a judge to replace Scalia, a judge to replace Kennedy (most likely), and either Clinton or Biden chooses a judge to replace Ginsburg. Alongside Democrats replacing Breyer as Biden did. In that reality it's a very strong 6-3 majority of young Democratic judges in the SC and we'd be debating whether or not Republicans would ever take back the court in the next few decades. The important takeaway is how important every election at every level is, if you care about something like pro-choice or anything else.

Not exactly because most of Vanguard's funds are not actively managed. They automatically track an index. They buy and sell in proportion to a stock's market cap. I think it's more like Elon's buying tons of Twitter stock becoming Twitter's largest shareholder recently drove the stock upward, thus triggering index funds to automatically buy more of that stock. If Elon's threat, or whatever word you would use, to buy Twitter altogether sends the stock price upward then it would do the same thing too.

Yeah it's an abomination. Those articles like the ones on the right will always appear first on google searches too. Half the time they're not even complete or they're just all copy-pasting the same blocks of text from each other. But it's honestly confusing why they even exist.

I remember googling "Persona 5 accessories" hoping to see a full list of accessory equipment in the game and shitty articles like the right-one appear going through paragraphs of non-detail about what the game is about and then near the bottom of the article show a tiny table of accessories you can buy near the beginning of the game - clearly not having made it very far themselves and just rushing to push out these shitty advice pieces. Like I wonder if the authors of those are deluding even themselves that they're helping anyone or if they're 100% all-in on just trying to be clickbait on the first page of google searches.

His advice should be considered advice for debt addicts in the same way something like Alcoholics Anonymous or Gamblers Anonymous are for other addicts. A normal person can drink some wine or beer sometimes and it won't have any detrimental effects on their life. A former alcoholic has reason to exercise extreme caution. Similarly, someone who somehow keeps ending up under mountains of credit card debt should probably cut up credit cards until they figure out if there's a root cause spending problem. People can and do go on shopping binges the same way other addicts go on binges.

With that being said it is a little different I suppose because you can make the argument that those other addictions are vices that everyone can cut out without any problems. Debt however can be an extremely valuable tool when used correctly and in modern America it's kind of the only way you can do a lot of things. No normal person can actually buy a car or a house or go to college without taking on debt. And responsible use of credit cards leads to better credit scores which leads to better rates on those car and house loans and things. Not to mention credit card benefits and stuff. So all those Ramsey Proselytes who altogether believe that debt is the devil are spreading irresponsible nonsense but the advice is true for some subset of people who do need to be debt-averse.
