I'm pretty sure the GS version of Kanto is a fucking miracle, from a programming perspective.

I don't remember the specifics but the guy who pulled it off gets a fair bit of praise.

It's not like they weren't getting creative already though with red and blue. There's so much shared memory between assets such as the overworld map, items, and Pokemon that the game is incredibly easy to break in 100 different ways.
