Heavy emphasis on Bullet Time, jump-dogging, on top of being a solid all-around third-person shooter is what makes a Max Payne game and they more than nailed that with MP3. The change from tone/setting from the New York noir backdrop was done in a very natural, believable way in the context of the story that's being told (which is still very dark in gritty in itself) and the lack of dream sequence (which isn't a dealbreaker at all) makes sense to me seeing as, again, due to the context of the story -- MP3 is about Max trying to get his shit together in more ways than one. Hell, the major song for the game (that was already posted itt) is suppose to be from the perspective of Personally, it didn't seem like Max's narration was lacking. He was talking pretty frequently and I love the direction they took with him altogether. And as with the lack of graphic novel cutscenes, it's just a simple change in storytelling style. Some people might like it, some people might not, but it's definitely not something that makes a MP game a MP game. While there were some minor deviations from the first too games, it's not like it strayed so far into no longer being a Max Payne game. It's 100% a Max Payne game with a slightly different stylistic choice. --- |

The biggest changes are the setting -- which I'm totally fine with after two games telling a New York noir story, not to mention that they touch on it a bit in 3 and it serves as a nice transition to the game's new direction in terms of tone and setting, which I feel they pulled off incredibly well -- the weapon inventory system, which I can see why some might have an issue with considering you can hold all your guns in the previous game, and the lack of platforming sections which I sa good riddance to. Aside from those mostly small things, it's 100% a Max Payne game made with Rockstar's particular touch. --- |

But MP3 was just fucking outstanding. I hooked up my PS3 to play it again not too long ago. I loved almost everything about it -- the presentation, the change of setting and the tone, the amazing soundtrack, the more fluid controls, Max's growth as a character, the fact that they got rid of the unnecessary platforming sections (which already makes it better than the first two for me). My only real gripes with the game are the (mostly) unskippable cutscenes and the fact that they got rid of the Bullet Time Reload move from MP2. But other than that, it's easily the best of the three imo. I wonder if R* will ever bother making a new one, or at the very least, porting MP3 to current and last gen consoles. --- |
