I mean you'd think that with squeenix never being shy about returning to the well for another remaster or remake that they could at least remember that Ivalice exists.

The long graph. We've reached peak unoriginality, and the industry as an agregate has reached the point where there's very few new ideas and nostalgia has become its own genre even if they get it wrong 90% of the time because people will still buy into it. Think "fuck around and find out", but it's actually "remember this thing you liked?, Here's a soulless zombie of it, love me".

It's like "Sublime with Rome". I loved Sublime. Rome is admittedly amazing at aping Bradley. But it isn't and never will be Sublime.

Doesn't matter what time you eat or what you eat for that meal. Technically, the first thing you eat in a day is "breakfast" because that's when you've broken the fast. Grapefruit and cereal at 6:30am? That's breakfast. You didn't eat all day and have steak and potatoes at 10pm? Still breakfast.

Out of curiosity, why chopsticks?

In my case, I reject having the knife on this list because the knife is a tool that far exceeds just an eating utensil. Granted, eating with 2 knives in the pre-fork times was the height of sophistication, but we're like half a milenium past those days. 90% of foods I can think of off the top of my head can be eaten with chopsticks if prepared correctly. Soups, stews and cereals can simply be slurped from the bowl. Plus, chops are probably the easiest to make from scratch with a variety of simple materials.

Bamboo and wood are nearly ubiquitous, and if we've lost the technology to have knives, I worry about fire making as a technology, because how are you preparing the food you're eating in the first place at that point?

Socially/politically...for sure. But cellphones, soap, toothpaste, not going to the barber for surgery/dentistry, and refrigeration are pretty damn good.

Yes, betting on where the future can lead us just leads to kind of poor imaginings of what the future could be.
But, that's not what makes scifi interesting, the ability to teleport a missile onto another persons ship, or shoot a gauss rifle with flechette bullets to zip though someone, or the ability to have personal flying machines is interesting, but, that's not why I care about scifi settings. It's the fact that scifi is inherently a human question, it's the fact that we have the effective power of gods, but, not necessarily the morality to follow through with it. It amplifies and shows who we are and what we do, and how we justify it.

A lot of the "scifi greats" aren't about what technology is and what it can do, it's following through with the thought of so what. If humans had the ability to travel through space, but are still stuck in tribalism, so what do you get? Dune. If you have humans travel through space, but, hold themselves to an unbendable moral/ethical code, what do you get? Star Trek. Basically every Assimov short story and book is just about humans dealing with who they are, and the technology passes over.

The technology is just a gravy on top of a story about who humans are, and how far we go, in scifi greats.

I'm not disagreeing with you. The "Hero's Journey" is one of the oldest tropes for a reason. All I'm saying is that the set pieces in sci-fi work very differently than they do in fantasy settings.

I mean to be fair, a lot of my times in a lot of games, especially RPGs are artificially inflated from napping/sleeping/passing out while grinding.

I got home from work, played a bit, my girl texted me, I forgot about the game running, went to bed...boom, the next morning I got up, forgot about the game entirely, went to work...by the time that game even occurred to me again, 12-20 hours went by while it was just sitting on a menu.

You obviously get my point though. A sword cleaving an orc in twain is never "cringe worthy". Watching Picard struggle to carry 2 dozen "tablets" to his desk to perform a simple administrative task is hard to look at when I'm literally sitting within 3 feet of 2 cellphones, a tablet, a Chromebook, a laptop, and a desktop and all of them are more than capable of multitasking whilst light speed or multiple factors of lightspeed still elude us completely.

It's sort of ironic how badly a lot of elements of sci-fi age so poorly given Clarke's great quote about "any sufficiently advanced technology being indistinguishable from magic" when some of the absolute units of sci-fi have anachronistic tech whereas things like airships in fantasy can just be handwaved as "magitech".

I'm not saying it wasn't. That being said, if I had to choose between other awesome grave robbings for nostalgia... Psychonauts 2? Meh. Mighty #9? Meh. Like, at least Bloodstained was true to form instead of a zombified imping of what made the source material great.

Clarke and Asimov are absolute units. Heinlein is hit or miss. Niven was great at giant set pieces but wrote dialog like Sheldon Cooper would. He really shines when he lets others write humans being humans, and in Lucifer's Hammer you can literally see when each author tags out. Ringworld has an amazing setting and the most...robotic dialog.

Scifi in general has one major drawback to me that really breaks the immersion in a way that fantasy can't.

Fantasy never ages. Swords are always swords. Magic fireballs are always whoosh burn.

In sci-fi, it always has the stink of when it was written. I'm not shitting on classic sci-fi, but centuries in the future, people are still being couriered "holotapes". Picard sits at his desk doing personell reviews with 2 dozen PADDs on his desk because in 1986 one tablet multitasking with multiple windows was inconceivable.

Scifi is great, but it ages like milk and fish in a way fantasy just doesn't.

Yet another unoriginal pull from the nostalgia well nobody asked for.

I mean, I love the magic rectangle in my pocket that gives me access to most of humanity's sum total knowledge. On the other hand, I'm glad my awkward teenage years aren't chronicled in full on the internet forever.

That being said, "the past" is big. I'd probably draw the line at pre-antibiotics, indoor plumbing, and electricity. I have no problem practicing "voluntary homelessness" when I go camping. But I like knowing I have a warm bed, a real toilet, and Advil to come home to. I'd love to see ancient times as a fly on the wall, but if we're going much further back than Shakespeare, I'm a modern, native English speaker and I'd barely be understood in Shakespeare's time, and if I pulled my zippo out to light a cigarette I'd end my day burnt as a witch if anyone saw what I was up to. I can't even imagine any ADOS wanting to go back in time further than 1968, despite having their own bathrooms to themselves.

You're gonna have a hard time finding rigs that'll have the balls to try it. Admittedly, it would be chaos but if I were Hochul I'd be shitting bricks worrying about a NY Honkening. It would not just fizzle out in a "free speech zone" the way Occupy did.

I'm pretty sure Hochul just lifted the mask mandate in NY because someone sat her down and explained how a dozen truckers could pretty much bring Manhattan to it's knees in 3 days and the only voter block in New York that matters to anybody is Manhattan.

ANON on Netflix. Interesting premise, but between the pacing, and the ridiculous plot hook going into the second act I was annoyed. No antagonist that is that savvy should also be that oblivious unless they had the attention span of a goldfish. Especially if the whole McGuffin relies on how fastidious the antagonist is about details.
