What was your GOTY for 2018?

It was a tough year, without question. There is basically a Big 6 (IMO) that you can't really argue the technical merits of. God of War, Spider-Man, Red Dead Redemption 2, Smash Bros Ultimate, Celeste, and Monster Hunter World.

If I'm just picking the game I played the most, Monster Hunter World would be it. Awesome creature design, fun fights, the grind is not nearly as bad as in previous games, and playing it on a powerful system for the first time was awesome. But, also, a lot of that fun is based off other people playing it with me. Once my friends were not available, my fun factor went down.

Same goes with Smash Bros.

So then we go to God of War, Spider-Man, RDR 2, and Celeste.

Spider-Man is fun, but nothing about it again was innovative. It was exactly what I wanted, which isn't a bad thing, but it doesn't make it GOTY. Not with the others.

So then you had 3. God of War was magnificent, telling a personal story about the last character I'd have ever thought I'd care to hear a "personal story" about. Humanizing Kratos from basically being a rage monster hell bent on destroying the gods to what happened in GOW 4 was impressive. Damned impressive.

Red Dead 2 being almost as much a simulator as it was a "Rockstar" game is somewhat unexpected. I wasn't expecting a more core Wild West sim from the likes of "SHARK CARDS!!!" Rockstar. It was appreciated despite the odd controls at times.

Celeste is a very good platformer with an affecting storyline that hit me harder than I was expecting. It's unexpected that in a genre that is mostly dominated by "Get to the end of the level because that's how the game works/rescue the person in distress/get the macguffin" is an amazing story about the effects of depression and anxiety on a person, and learning to accept those issues with yourself.

I think my GOTY is Red Dead 2, overall.

I can understand why it would be a GOTY for some individuals. Perhaps you could argue best "Bang For Your Buck" in terms of amount of gameplay versus the cost, but comparing it to something like Monster Hunter World seems... unlikely.

Just got done with my first run. Got the first 3 islands completed, but abandoned after 2 of my pilots died, since I wanted to bring back at least one good pilot for the next run.

Sticking with the original "team" you can have, but did unlock the next set.

Feels different from FTL but just as fun.

Depending on ass size it can be a bit tough too.

Girl with a great ass? That can oddly get in the way when it comes to vaginal penetration from behind. She ends up having to arch her back a lot to get into a position that makes it work well.

I feel pretty ambivalent towards the gory stuff, but you can tell there sre alot of intentional gratuity that yeah, makes the scenes a little tasteless.

Its not they should take out the rape scenes. But i dunno, find a better way to do it, maybe in other angles or whatever. Also away with the obvious fan services like all the bouncy tit shots, that imo, cheapen the show quality.

Honestly, i dont know why or explain why, the fan services in reincarnated as a slime is also full of bouncy tits, yet it feels different. Like it is a harmless joke, that everyone including the girls laughed warmly after.

It's about tone and what the effect is going for. Slime is obviously a comedy, and as such body jokes come with the territory. Hell, even a major blockbuster comedy film like Liar Liar has boob jokes in it. It's just a part of humor.

The best I can offer for Goblin Slayer is that his childhood best friend feels comfortable enough around him to be unguarded in her physical appearance. Same thing with the Sword Maiden as she lets down her guard around him.

The mage female character I think is more a nod to how people play D&D. Heck, my wife played D&D as a voluptuous female spell caster, used her sexuality to get shit done.

I have completed Goblin Slayer's first season.

I haven't been as conflicted about an anime as I have been about this in quite a long time. I find the character design, audio design, OST, and general "feel" of the anime really high quality. I watched the sub and it is well acted. The battles and tactics really reflect a reflexive D&D thinker, and it is really refreshing to see an anime based in a Fantasy setting that is more about tactics and just "what works" over fancy techniques and abilities. Need to kill a large enemy? Lure it over a tripline, have it fall down, stab it in the back of the head. No need for some amazing STABBY DEATH move. Later on they do show some "advanced techniques", but beyond magic spells, it's all just movement and dodge type abilities, nothing outside the realistic vibe they are going for.

Yet, its overabundance of fanservice and the disappointing shock-value use of sexual assault is really disappointing. Especially since the first episode when it aired did not have a warning about it. My wife, who LOVES anime, was negatively affected by some of the imagery to the point she couldn't watch the rest of the series. It is "triggering" to those who have lived through sexual assault, and there was no warning, no indication that such content would be part of the series.Subsequent episodes did have a warning on screen about the graphic content, but as neither my wife or I wanted to spoil ourselves for the series, we didn't read the light novel or the manga.

It seems they learned their lesson, as nothing was as... exploitative throughout the rest of the season, but it was still disappointing. They do have fan-service in terms of boob shots with the childhood friend, but I think that's more about showing a genuine innocence in her feeling comfortable to look that way around him, as opposed to JUST being about "anime fans like boobs, do it!". But, I could be giving it far too much credit.

I will personally watch whatever they do next as I feel everyone deserves to learn from their mistakes. The quality is up there, and if you want a more gritty fantasy setting with an intriguing, oddly complex main protagonist, I'd definitely give it a shot. Just be warned, the first episode is VERY graphic. Like, Berserk 1990's level of graphic.

What do you think of Trudeau's handling of pipelines. I'm an American, but it seems like his approval of various projects in that regard is at odds with his stated views on climate change.

I think that you can both make pipelines that take advantage of the oil you have AND work towards initiatives that deal with climate change.

Canada is too large to convert everything to renewable currently. We might as well find effective, safe ways to ensure that the oil that is sold is moved safely and efficiently.

Should an average joe be allowed to purchase grenades, for example.

Good question. I think explosives like grenades and rocket launchers should be controlled, but fully automatic rifles should be legal.

Isn't the worry then escalation? Not to quote Batman Begins or anything, but if "everyone" has fully automatic rifles, and we agree criminals won't follow the law on guns to begin with, doesn't that give them license and the "need" to go even further than that?

I'm not suggesting a gun ban. That is ridiculous. No real change in gun ownership will affect much until you deal with black market sales of guns too, which (from what I've read) is somewhat high in the US.

Tackle that first. Before you worry about which weapons to "ban" or not, deal with groups of people who are illegally selling them.

Not when it interferes with a constitutional right. We started the American Revolution because we DIDN'T want to live in a police state. Liberals should move to the UK.

I'm a Canadian. We love our guns. We have a lot of guns per capita (I mean, not compared to the US because LOL), yet nowhere near the amount of gun violence.

Wouldn't that be accounted for by changes in political ideology and social policy as opposed to just a blanket, "Americans are more violent by nature" type argument?

Nope, they don't care about innocent people being robbed or killed. They think "nobody needs a gun."

I think the idea is you take care of the disenfranchised and people who have it bad, there is less crime and thus less need to carry semi-automatic weapons to protect yourself.

I don't know many well-off people who are mugging others and breaking into homes to steal a TV.

What about a sex offender who breaks into women's homes? Do you think his financial situation matters? You can't just end crime by giving government handouts. There are bad people out there.
