Please excuse the bump, but Champions of Zed arrived, and it is good. I also managed to get leads on the hard copies I mentioned above, but I have noticed that Swords & Wizardry Complete seems to be limited to PDF format, though Swords & Wizardry Core is not. *shrugs* Either way, it is cool to have all of these low-priced options for old school play.

I think the next series I pick up (next month, possibly) will be the Adventurer Conqueror King System, or ACKS for short. That one is neat because it is specifically tailored to the strongholds and followers that your characters acquire upon reaching certain levels, and it focuses on that aspect of the game, up to and including empire-building.

I noticed that several OSR fans consider 5E to be OSR in its own way, and the stripped-down approach does make sense from that standpoint, though recent 5E releases are gradually bulking the game back up again (... if one does not mind very expensive, oddly thin hardcovers for everything).

Several of my coworkers started a 5th Edition group that meets on Wednesday nights, and they invited me to join, so ... been doing that for a month or so. My first time playing 5th Edition, though I have had the books for a good while (five years, IIRC). Going from Pathfinder to that feels downright bizarre, especially considering how skills play. Example: My ranger, because he has a criminal background (and the bonuses that grants), is basically a rogue who is a crack shot with a bow, and, at first glance, that feels like it should not be possible with a vanilla class.

Thought it might be a good time to start up another one of these, since I have been picking up assorted retroclones and comparing / contrasting them.

Of the ones I have examined so far, White Box (not Swords & Wizardry Whitebox, though it is derived from that) and Basic Fantasy seem to be the most promising for the types of games I like to run, but the sheer number of choices is great, and almost all of the books involved are available either as free (and legal) PDFs or at-cost hard copies (e.g. the Basic Fantasy core book only set me back $3.80 U.S. before tax). Hoping to get hard copies of OSRIC and Labyrinth Lord (and possibly Swords & Wizardry Complete), but not yet. Champions of Zed is arriving in the mail soon, and I need to set that next to Iron Falcon and see if I am looking for more of a 1st Edition or Zero Edition feel.

There. Got that out of my system. Feel free to discuss anything tabletop-y here.

Figured I could pick up the ball, but I'm kind of homebrewing it, and I'm still deciding how I'd like to do it. More on that later, but you can enjoy your retirement. :-) Thank you for running these as long as you have.

Not a lot to report. Noticed that my Kindle still thinks Anime Strike exists, but it gives me error messages if I tap my finger on it. Need to hunt down anime the old-fashioned way on Amazon Prime again.

I like Haiti. Studied it at university. It has a very rich history, and a unique culture. Unfortunately, it is quite possibly the unluckiest country in the world, thanks to a record of piss-poor government (including at least one of the scariest dictators in world history), natural disaster, and repeated intervention from outside forces (especially the U.S. and the Dominican Republic).

As I have said in other posts here, I love the original Box (and still play it!), and I like the 360 (... despite getting the Red Ring of Death on my first one), but the Bone has nothing on it that I want to play, nor does it seem to have any noteworthy exclusives. Is it a bad system? No, just not the console for me.

Here. My wife has started playing both Fate / Grand Order and Fire Emblem Heroes, and that warms my heart. Very little anime grabbing my attention this season, but I am listening for recommendations in several places (here, the Crunchyroll forum, etc.). Violet Evergarden comes up consistently.

The Bone has no JRPGs. This means I have zero reason to play it, and this is unfortunate, since I enjoy both the 360 and (especially) the original Box.

I get that it's a SMT game, so I should have expected this difficulty, I just didn't realize that I was so dependent on cheats the first time through. >_>

The first playthrough of DS1 is always rough, IMO, but NG+ will let you have a much easier time seeing all the other routes and story content. I cheesed out and got the Yuzu ending on my first go in vanilla (original DS) DS1.

Amazon Prime has discontinued Anime Strike, though it looks like all of the prior Anime Strike exclusives have been folded into the Prime Video library. And Sentai Filmworks has defected from Amazon to Hidive, so it looks like I might get a Hidive subscription, after all. (Introductory rate is $3.99 U.S. per month.) Does not hurt that Hidive has stuff like Ideon and Xabungle. Makes me wonder if they picked up the remnants of the old licenses that Daisuki had before it failed.

No, Sony took care of that by abandoning it shortly after releasing it, but third-party developers took up the slack, so, if you enjoy JRPGs and VNs, it remains a choice system. ... But, as far as casual players are concerned, it never really existed.

That the most recent movie is generating record levels of butthurt in the fan base tells me that the director did exactly what he wanted to do: Deliver something different from what came before. I loved it, but others will feel differently, of course.

I keep getting e-mail from HIDIVE, since I used to have a subscription to The Anime Network. A little annoying, but ... they have Xabungle. *grumbles*

And I have Amazon gift cards. I suspect those are going to be used for Munchkin expansions, but I am tempted to get as much as of the Trinity Seven manga as I can.
