Does Darth Vader count? Technically before he was in a movie, he was in a screenplay.

Next up: coding and programming, alright. I don't think my old HTML skills apply perfectly with this Python-variant, but most of it makes sense early on. I'll need to remember these words:

var
func
String
bool

Operators, I think...?

Decided to check out a lesson or two on the making-an-RPG course early too, just to see what I catch -- very presentation'y day. I'm not ready for all of this one and it's stated early on. This teacher had a gameplan about this course's resources: have some pre-made ones on stand-by before making this video and new game (I think Godot's open-source assets?).

Dunno that everyone has to do it like this, but so far this RPG-course looks like it's going in the order of PROJECT/GAME --> NODE/SCENE --> RESOURCES/ASSETS --> CONTROLLER --> PLAYER --> ??? --> PROFIT. That helps me frame in my head a bit more about structuring what's ahead to get to what I think a game should look and play like.

The Humble Bundle intro videos are getting more into the 3D side of things now...I'm gonna watch the whole tutorial, but I'm more interested in the 2D genres. I'll keep tinkering aside from these videos, but it's easy to get stuck. I haven't seen how to make a game from its earliest nodes much, and don't know much about the transition from there to working on Godot's next steps. Fumbling in the meanwhile...!

Latest take-aways: resources are assets like textures, I see a lot of file management ahead, and there are indeed some one-button shortcuts. Nice.

Comparing the demo to my new file: I don't understand why I can't add an Exploration node to a new game like the JRPG Demo seems to be doing. One guess is the demo renamed the node for that file...but I don't know what the original node for that gameplay-type should be then, and that also seems confusing to do unannounced for the purpose of a demo. I'll cave in and Google it soon.

EGM > Tips & Tricks > Game Informer for magazines covering all consoles (shout-outs to Nintendo Power)

Things I remember about EGM:

Their preview for Perfect Dark might be the magazine article I most re-read.

War Gods was a real bad game, but goddamn they had a hot woman as Vallah in a two-page poster for it from when they covered the game.

Tekken 3 getting the first 10/10 in years with them felt like a big moment in the industry. Maybe that was just a kid's perspective though.

Their April Fools-pranks landed hard sometimes. Sheng Long in Street Fighter, All Bonds in Goldeneye, Sonic in Melee...some of this speaks to how gullible we were before the internet was prepared enough for such fact-checking, but also some of that spoke to how much EGM was trusted.

They had a reviewer named Shoe, and I thought they had another reviewer who was referred to as a ninja but it's hard to remember.

ONCE UPON A TIME one of my emails to them was included in the letters to the editor. I have no idea what I said to them anymore but I think it was a positive letter.

EGM was fantastic for a long time. There was a period in the 2003'ish(?) era were they were re-reviewibg and dissing some great games the previously reviewed real well -- think this included lowering of opinions on Banjo-Kazooie and Perfect Dark -- and I found that indicative of their lowering of quality in recent times at that time, so I dropped them...but for a long time, they were the best game magazine.

Quick note as I explore JRPG Demo: I did not see Player or Opponent in the node-section as expected, nor did I see any nodes with the silhouette of a person as its little icon like a tutorial video I have on in the background would indicate...

...until I take a break from typing this to bring back up Godot, and then here it is (no silhouete-icon included).

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/forum/5/5c123662.png

I don't understand why this just appears for me yet, but okay. I turned the enemy blue slime into something twice its size on the world map and then also made its sprite appear upside-down. Also, I noticed a glitch! Or at least what I'm calling a glitch for the moment. My current sprite for Player only stays and appears that way if I don't bump into a wall...but if I do, it will go to its shocked sprite and then revert to the original slime-sprite it was again. Interesting.

I hid most of the grass/flowers/pebbles with the eyeball-icon. That feels like Photoshop. It does appear based off this demo though that the flowers and grass in the non-walkable areas are stored elsewhere than the folder I first did this in for the walkable areas...probably just a personal choice of organization there.

Moved some bushes, whatever. Switching from Select Mode to Move Mode feels a little slow and clunky but I'm also still very new.

Also, zooming in and out with the middle mouse button makes sense, but I am not used to holding it to drag things around like my general view-point. I'll get used to it.....

Aaaaaaaand now my scene menu's changed back to how it first was again:

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/forum/a/a5e53b1e.png

Think this happened from when I clicked the script-logo beside one of the nodes. Good news though is that I now see what my disconnect was here: these are two different scenes I'm dealing with, a Game node scene and an Exploration node scene. Tricky!

Saving this deconstruction for later. Going back to the Humble Bumble overall training for awhile.

I'm all for seeing Donald lose. Also though, with both candidates having insane name recognition and Donald beating Hillary despite lower spending in 2016, I am cautious about cheering much at this yet. I also don't know how to coincide this information with reports earlier this campaign about how much more professionally Donald's campaigning now than how his 2016-campaign went. Did that change? Or am I conflating old news or different aspects here? Just happy about that news but worried about its potential lack of impact at the moment.

Did a few slides/videos from the Humble Bundle intro course. Nothing bad so far, even though looking at Godot continues to look initially overwhelming. Main takeaway so far: scenes are collections of nodes and nodes are like atoms.

So, here's the JRPG Demo that came with Godot. I played it. It's very simple.

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/forum/0/080b6d24.jpg
(there's supposed to be a key in the middle like the gameplay has -- basically here's a blue slime I can fight and a key that I can't pick up with some light dialogue and a battle screen)

I changed the Player node (yellow slime) in a few little ways like position on the map and the image, but they took a long time to figure out because this interface immediately felt like a lot when I first saw it and that has not changed yet. Not much was successfully done here, but I'm allowing myself time to be stuck and explore. Going forward, I will be deconstructing this demo through its other existing nodes later on. With any luck, I will one day not recognize it.

I began a new file so I can explore both sides of working on scenes, but am stuck pretty early. I have Node2D, Camera2D, TileMap, and Timer at the moment. I figure this keeps my viewpoint and genre locked down until I change them later. My next search is for Player like I saw in the JRPG Demo, but I don't see that node yet.

Ah well. I'm exploring both sides of scenes here. I will find that node soon enough.

Number one thing is trying to have fun while learning some basics as I stare blankly awhile, so I'm gonna push for what I hope is a realistic goal: make an RPG in Godot with.....

  • Two rooms
  • One fight
  • One non-default piece of artwork (don't have to make it but maybe for extra points)
  • One non-default song or sound effect (don't have to make it but maybe for extra points)
  • Dialogue
  • A beginning and an end
  • No money spent during this process

As a n00b, I feel like this is basic and achievable. We shall see.

All my game design experience comes from Starcraft's level creator, that pigeon Yamamura from Mario Maker 2, the demo from Game Maker Garage, and a lot of YouTube videos on design philosophies but without any of that pesky actually-take-action stuff that usually comes with making a game.

I also wrote David Perry from Earthworm Jim once about a game I had drawn out as a kid -- a platformer where you play as a T-Rex with lasers on the moon. He sent me a very nice postcard back with the Cat From Hell on it, trying to politely reach me the difference between a developer and a publisher (think I said Konami should develop it and Shiny Entertainment should publish) but to continue thinking about game design. I expect this childhood experience to carry me through this project.

I bought a Godot Humble Bundle awhile back...will look it up soon to see what I can use or learn from it.

This will likely be slow-paced and I might ask questions along the way, but mainly I intend to just stumble through and report back sometimes until I'm done or I quit.

Let's a-go.

I know C:SotN seems like a favorites-pick (which is partially true in my vote), but for what it's worth: it was a critical darling in video game magazines at the time in a way I don't think many of the other non-FF7/MGS/RE options being mentioned were (Tekken 3 was an exception to be fair and maybe Gran Turismo), it redefined what was already one of gaming's biggest series at that time and did so without taking the 3D turn in an era where people were afraid we were losing 2D games, it has its own notable spoiler, and it's now responsible for half the name of a popular genre. Also, as a personal opinion, while I first played it a decade late on Xbox 360 it was immediately excellent then...whereas I did not feel that way about any Crash, Spyro, or Tomb Raider game even at the time of their releases. They get mascot-credit -- which is worthy of noting here! -- but while they were good for marketing the PS1 none of them were as decisively THE PlayStation mascot as Mario or Sonic were for their systems, so I give them less credit on that point. Cloud and Solid Snake were arguably the face of that system too, and that's because Lara/Crash/Spyro didn't fill the gap a good game mascot needed to do then: have an *excellent* game.

Bias is here, but so is its clear impact. C:SotN is worthy of the conversation and vote. Maybe TR/Crash/Spyro deserve credit for being the games I played during that era, but C:SotN was received very well then too and was so good a decade later on a different system that I won't hold it against the game here.

Grand Theft Auto 3 (preferred GTA:SA but will respect the original 3D game-changer in the series)
Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater (my tiebreaker here was which MGS-game would look better on the mountain)
God of War
Silent Hill 2 (this system has SH2 and RE4 but both have so few votes here -- not sure I understand what dynamic's happening here but the genre arguably peaked this generation)

SMB1 (can't replace, though I almost tried with Duck Hunt)
SMB3 (the second-oldest "greatest game ever" contender I would still respect in a conversation and only behind...)
MM2 (...trickiest choice here, but this was the first game I was ever hyped for and the series had six mainline gameson the same system)
LoZ (#goldcartridge)

SBAllen was right about S3&K. We should have consolidated efforts into S&K -- people would have thought of its connectivity anyway.

Agreed. Sonic 1 gets "started the series" cred but is really rough while Sonic 2 is where it rightfully blew up. It's like OG Mega Man in that way.

I just want to respect for a moment: for the first time, ChatGPT sniped a good nomination that none of us mentioned. Judy Hopps isn't making my Rushmore personally but she was great.

We'll see if they have the same staff or the same rules next time since both seem to change each year. This is correct about them being haters last year though.
