This is the first gen where Ive ever really felt that nothing has happened. Like, if somebody asked me to name great games from any previous gen Ive been around to experience, it would be easy. For this one, Ive got nothing.

I wonder if some of these games just aren't for you as Baldur's Gate 3 was a huge deal and a very good game.

I think it can work if done properly, but (as a player) I typically look for games where all players get on and work together.

I've never come across a game where two (or more) players want to be hostile to each other. I've seen it where one player has decided this (and it's been shut down because that's not the game that we all want to play) and they tend to be the sort of people that I don't really want to play RPGs with.

Hostility being different to characters/players disagreeing about something or wanting to approach a problem in different ways.

I started The Quarry last night with a friend and I'd recommend that too. I can't imagine it being as fun, playing alone.

Only hope is to take em out at the knees. Combat sports don't generally allow for cheap tactics though but real world...

I'm talking straight attempting to break their leg at the knee.

How do you propose to try and break someone's knee? Plenty of combat sports allow strikes to the legs and knees, and plenty allow leg locks. It's not some sort of secret tactic that will win you a fight instantly. And it's not easy to try and break someone's knee, especially if they're a lot bigger than you. Obviously things are different if you've got some sort of weapon, but I'm not sure why you'd target the knee in particular if you've got a gun for example.

Ari Aster's Hereditary and Midsommar are both mediocre films carried by thematic shock value and stylistic details. Neither film explores the themes present (generational trauma and toxic codependency) especially well. The stylistic details aren't bad, but are a bit derivative because they don't express anything that isn't already obvious in the film's text. Neither film is bad, but their high praise only exists because the horror genre is mostly known for films of a general low quality.

I completely agree with this.

Yes if I'm understanding you. For anyone in employment, it will get deducted from your salary, alongside your taxes, by your employer. I'm not sure how it would work for anyone who is self-employed. But yeah, people that I know think of these deductions a lot more like a tax than a loan.

At least in the US student debt reduction/forgiveness has actually become a discussion on the table. In the UK, even if you suggested 1 of student loan forgiveness you'd be immediately shouted at and laughed out of the room.

I don't know if you would get laughed out of the room, but student loans are handled differently here in the UK.

It looks like new students aren't required to pay anything back until they're earning 25k (for reference, I think the median full-time salary in the UK was around 30k last time I looked into it). You pay 9% of your income about this threshold towards your loans, and anything unpaid is written off after 40 years. I'm not saying that this will have no impact on a student going to university now, but if they earned 30k/year they could pay 450 a year (38/month) for 40 years (18k in total, which is less than you'd borrow for tuition fees alone), and the remainder would be written off.

It's nowhere near the sort of hardship that people can fall into by taking out student loans in the US.

And just a note that we have loan forgiveness in place. It ranges from 25 - 40 years, depending on when you took out your loans, but I believe that the majority of people don't pay back their loans before they are written off. We do have it pretty good here, compared to the US.

I've much preferred a Kindle to a tablet for reading (though admittedly I've not used a tablet for reading ebooks in a few years). It feels like you're not reading on a computer screen, which is so much nicer when you're reading for a longer period of time. If you were looking to read things that would benefit from colour, a tablet might be better, but if you're just reading ebooks, I'd definitely go for an ereader.

The argument here is that a PC suitable for casual tasks + gaming console comes out to be about the same price a gaming PC.

Like you can spend 600 on a really fast casual PC and 400 on a gaming console or spend 1000 for one PC that does both.

I think this is where it becomes not worth it for a lot of people. Do you need a $600 PC for non gaming tasks? Some people obviously will, but I wonder how many. I've bought a console this year for the first time in a while and use that for gaming (I don't play a huge number of games, so a few a year will do for me), and I don't know that I've turned my PC on in 2024. My smartphone is great for anything that would have been casual PC usage, and I've got a laptop from my employer for work. Outside of PC gamers, a lot of people I know have a laptop or tablet or just a smartphone. I think there just isn't a need for PCs for most people in the way that there was.
