I'm not sure how you company is structured, but if you have separate PTO and sick time, use the sick time. I had my tonsils removed last year and had to take 2 weeks off and they just let me go into the negatives with sick time so I didn't have to use my PTO or floating holidays.

So from my understanding of various jobs who have had policies:

If you had to call in and say I am having emergency surgery and I'll miss today, sorry. That's a sick day.
If you then say "I'll also need Tuesday and Wednesday off" those would be vacation days since you're doing it ahead of time.

But each job can differ how they use them. My job now doesn't give a shit and probably likes it that I use sick days in place of vacation sometimes since I can carry over unlimited sick days each year and that lowers the amount.

Nobody here knows what your company's leave policy is. Ask your manager or HR.

Yeah this is how it is for my job. Sick leave hours are for unplanned absences and vacation/annual leave are for preplanned absences.

But I agree that you should check with your HR TC. As you've seen, different companies handle these differently, so you'll want to be sure
