The human mind is hardwired to make us gather into groups with the same opinions and make us concentrade our hate to other groups that are different or got different opinions, because that raises our probabilities to survive. Religions and war are the results of this. Homosexuality is natures way to prevent overpopulation. But since they are different than hetrosexuality, it is natural that some groups will concentrate their hate into homophobia. It is no joke, the nukes caused some heavy cultural changes in Japan that are still being echoed today. The Emperor had to give up his God status and the Government had to never use religion as a political tool, the Emperor only got a symbolic status like the UK royalties and the people got democracy, the male dominance in the family disappeared, they got free economy, etc. The nukes got a huge influence in the manga and anime industry, just look at the work of Osamu Tezuka and his successor, Hayao Miyazaki, which in turn inspired videogame developers, like Hideo Kojima. The answer is simple, it is the cultural difference that was born because of the nukes.
