It's one of the dumber villain deaths. I would have preferred the ending of the book where he gets eaten by barracudas.. It's still enjoyable in a campy way though.

LALD is one of the more goofier Bond movies that I like though.

In 1973, James Bond and Shaft traded places. It's a shame they didn't have a crossover a year later.

The compressed air capsule was introduced and displayed earlier, then used in the final fight. Chekov's Gun.

@scar_the_1

Yeah man.... Only reason I can think of is because they feel that the movies move too far from the source material. I don't think they realize... or care that most people wouldn't want to watch that shit in 2018 unless the whole thing was completely played for laughs in the most obvious way.

Camp is cool... for some material. Just not many.

The thing is, Bond doesn't work when it's too campy or too serious IMO.

It needs a fine balance.

That being said, campy Bond still ends up being much more fun.

Not really. The shark wasn't some detail mentioned, then put aside. It was the imminent threat that forced Bond to act quickly. Chekhov's gun is the principle that every element in the story must be necessary. The shark already served a purpose. The air bullet was stupid, but it would have been even more stupid to plant it earlier in the scene and then not use it.

So then Blofeld should've been killed by the radioactive lint from On Her Majesty's Secret Service.

The Bond series has subverted Chekov's gun multiple times. For Your Eyes Only stressed the capabilities of the Lotus, then blew it up in the next scene to show that this Bond film would be one where he relied on his wits rather than his gadgets.

I mean, ultimately, you do have to use that inflation gun to kill somebody. But it made the shark tank pointless unless they wanted to have Whisper get knocked into the tank and eaten instead.

I dunno, I didn't see that one.

The example doesn't describe subverting Chekhov's gun. And the shark tank wasn't pointless. It had a purpose. And that's what Chekohv's gun is about. That elements in a story should serve a purpose.

there were two guns in that scene. The suspense is then "which one will get fired?" The sharks are thirsting for Bond, who is actively bleeding. Bond has an instant-win button if he can overpower his foe.

It's pretty clever writing, even if it isnt executed perfectly.

Checkhovs Gun isn't absolute, in any case.

Yeah exactly, it's a principle. But you're absolutely right, it wasn't violated in this scene.
