Firstly, Black Panther is anti-globalist. Black Panthers moral coda is steeped in a strong nationalistic conviction that constantly places the wellbeing of his peoples history, culture, and identity over any external attempts at opening up the culture and economy of Wakanda, the fictional African country in the Marvel universe. Wakanda is a hierarchal society thats intentionally racially homogeneous, and its immigration policy is essentially isolationist. Other cultural influences are not permitted within Wakandan borders, as Black Panther believes them to be harmful to the wellbeing of his people. The Wakandan King enforces these policies through a culturally entrenched military, the Hatut Zerzae (a former secret police force turned mercenary group) & the Dora Milaje (the Kings all-female Praetorian Guard). In this sense, TChalla expresses strikingly neo-Nazi tendencies.

I think it'll hold and be one of their highest grossing films. The amount of hype is crazy and outside of the usual pre-release reviewer hype, it seems like the creative team really crafted something unique. I think the only thing that might hurt it is some reviewers are saying that the movie has trouble maintaining tone since it goes from political drama to spy thriller to action movie. I've seen it said that as a superhero movie it's kind of bad, but if you treat it more like a Borne or Bond movie it's actually much better.

I meant primarily from a visual perspective. They basically get to act like Guardians and can craft whatever world they want even though it technically takes place on earth because Wakanda is a hidden super society.

Oh and here is the HUGE difference. Wakanda is a nation where the ruling people have always been the ruling people. They are not immigrants, they have always been there. America is a nation of immigrants whose strength comes from our diversity. Not the same thing.

Pretty sure pre-sales were pushed more for this than the others for one thing, but no idea on the overall numbers.

I wanted to post in this for hours......

TC is actually right. all the people who "tore the agruement to shreds" I bet don't' even read the comics. Tchalla has always come off to me as a far right conservative in the comics. even long before I made any votes for Trump that you all point to as a sign of being a die hard republican even though I have voted for democrats more in my life. so I was not looking for what I wanted to see. not over a decade ago when I first got familiar with Tchalla. he ALWAYS seemed conservative. and his nation is conservative. so when people cheer this movie for liberals, it is so funny to me. they really do not understand the character at all.

He's sort of right. Peele said that a big part of his intention was to show the passive or "benign" racism of lots of white liberals that basically makes us feel good about not being "as racist" as the hillbillies and hicks who are more often seen as overtly racist.

He's wrong about the "true racists" part because that implies that only one side is racist when Peele was trying to demonstrate that racism is racism is racism and that being a white liberal with good intentions doesn't exempt you from being a racist just the same as the "others" with pitchforks in Alabama or wherever.

Not having seen the movie, I'm not going to assume what happens during it, but just as a thought experiment, what if one of the movie's themes or morals is about T'Challa learning that perhaps being so isolated and secretive is not necessarily the best policy?

Also *ahem* there's the little matter that Wakanda is an advanced society largely due to the vibranium it controls, not because it's so isolated, single-raced, or secretive.

Y'know, kinda how a certain real-life young country fell bass-ackwards into a large resource rich land some centuries back, and that's what launched it into prominence on the world stage.

this would be weird because why didn't he learn this lesson decades ago in the comic? he's been keeping his nation isolated still to this day, from the 60's to 2018. but one movie comes out, and suddenly he learns the lesson? it would annoy me.
