I heard that the entire population of the world could reasonably be condensed and fit in an area the size of Texas. It astounds me how sparsely populated any area anywhere looks on Google maps. Overpopulation is a thing that could start to happen, but right now it's not a global issue and it shouldn't factor into decisions about having kids. I agree with Maria completely.

That's completely fair; I don't think you have to be a parent to have a positive influence on the world. In fact, that's not what I'm even fighting for in this thread. It's the concept that you can check out of life because you can land a cushy finishing sequence on that retirement plan while doing nothing else of significance that bothers me. When you equate kids to cash, that's when you lose me. You can teach the younger generation to be better people without being fiscally responsible for them. I guess that would be tabii's argument, since she's a teacher (I think).

But I think that not feeling an obligation to better society (even in a minute way) is what the last couple of generations pretty much embody. And that has led to a variety of crises that I think were ultimately avoidable.

I didn't actually see most of prof's posts, so I can only assume he probably said some shitty things.

for me at least, everything is give and take. I do not allow myself to feel obligation at all. however, the five and take always applies and I try to be balanced. if I won 7-9 digits in the lottery, I most certainly would not just check out. yes I would secure my future, but there would be plenty left for good causes and other enriching experiences that would benefit me and offer chances to contribute in others' lives. the better things are for me, the better I'm going to want to be in terms of others, society and the world as a whole, but it works the other way too. If I'm apathetic and indifferent about society, it isn't displaying value and therefore I'll just continue to feel apathetic and indifferent. I just don't hold society on a pedestal above myself. It is on equal ground.

unfortunately I'm late to the topic so I don't know exactly how contradictory to this outlook prof was being. Seems like he shifted the subject of the conversation a bit lol, not that there's anything wrong with the conversation now as opposed to when it was strictly about wanting/not wanting kids.

I guess I live in a Gilbert and Sullivan world because I don't know how you can NOT feel a certain sense of duty to society. Maybe I'm just hardwired for a desire to make the world better. I mean yeah, I'd ideally like to make the world better. I have to question whether it deserves it though. I'm sure if I had some grand scheme that could improve the world, I'd just bite the bullet and go for it, but I don't at this point. I do see the merit in teaching the younger generation to be better people and I agree with that ideology, but I don't want to be responsible for anyone but myself. for example, if my nieces and/or nephew contribute positively to society/the world and cite me as a positive influence, I'd take pride in that... however, I don't have duties to them and they don't depend on me to put food on the table or a roof over their heads. I prefer it this way and thus don't want to be in the position of being a parent.

I'm sure there are shitty people in that group, who do and say shitty things, and you can definitely be offended by them when they are being offensive. As someone who is religious I am acutely aware that there are other religious people who present the ideology very poorly, and who are very terrible examples of Christ to the world. And it saddens me when that happens, but there are going to be terrible people in every grouping of people.

But the ones who hold that belief and keep to themselves about it? You are offended by the EXISTENCE of those people? That's pretty extreme.

It's not equating the two things, merely equating the blind disdain towards groups of people.

You indicated blind disdain and disregard towards PeopleGroupA.
Often in the past the gay community has received similar treatment.

And you don't have to be gay yourself to be offended on their behalf. It's the derision towards the group that is being equated, not the particulars of the group itself.

you are completely correct about it being a personal problem, yes. I wouldn't say so much that I'm offended by the types of people who would keep it to themselves, but the mere fact that they would hold such beliefs which are contradictory to reality is disappointing to the least, though I acknowledge that if they were raised in ignorance, they shouldn't be expected to know any better, but that in and of itself doesn't bring me any solace.

my disdain is far from blind. you did clear it up, but it seems like sep was so drastically oversimplifying it that I couldn't see his angle at all. I was trying to figure out how gay people could have been roped in with the other groups without having any reason to be.

It's more selfish to have children just to fulfill some sort of social requirement when you honestly don't have the resources to raise them, than it is to not have children. When all you have is nasty rocky clay for soil, you don't plant seeds in that soil just so you can say you grew a plant and made the world a better place - you prepare rich, fertile soil that the plants can thrive in. And if you don't have access to that soil, you don't fucking plant seeds.

Besides, people out there are raising their children to be racists and even self-proclaimed neo-Nazis - or on the other side of the fence, they're raising them to be the next wave of Greenpeace and PETA. These people aren't bettering the world, they're making it worse. It seems obvious that having children doesn't make the world better, it's instructing the next generation to be better that makes the world better, and you can do that without having kids of your own.

absolutely not. my nieces and nephew are awesome and I like the role of fun, crazy uncle, but when I think about the idea of being a parent and think of the pros and cons, all of the cons are tangible things that I want nothing to do with, while all the pros are abstract concepts that are just based on what people with kids tell me and I don't trust for a second that I'd feel the same way if I was in their situation.
