Not intelligence, wealth or being a "good" person. The ability to hold off on small short term benefits for greater long term benefits is king. Sadly it seems to be something this generation lacks in any great capacity. I think one of the most striking and important example of this "mindset" (or lack thereof) is the modern attitude towards the intimate connection between a man and a woman. Pre-marital sex is a textbook example of what I mean by going for a small benefit out of a want for self control. What is really sad about it is, unlike many other examples where the person will later realize their mistake, this kind of behavior is just accepted as normal these days. The men think they're somehow the top dogs for sleeping around (even when the average woman, at no prior point in history, had as many sexual partners as now) and the women think it is """empowering""" or some such nonsense. Mind you, I am not saying people should not have the right to act as such, in fact it is a useful tool for determining who is acceptable to associate with, but society has fallen quite far to go as far as to defend such acts. A society that champions lust and other base animal instincts over reason and restraint is one sick with a fatal illness. Truly, my co-workers have mentioned to me more than once that I need to go out and "get some" and look at me with the baffled faces of brute beasts when I try to explain my points to them, which are essentially facts. I plan on speaking to HR if the subject is brought up again (not because it bothers me, but it really is not an appropriate conversation topic for work) but I know it would ultimately do no good. If I had any political power I'd put laws into effect that would heavily fine anyone who produced a child without a marriage license and make said licenses legal contracts that would actually be enforceable (for example, cheaters would be jailed and divorce would be illegal).

Oh well, that'll never happen. No politician would do anything to displease such a large percentage of the masses, even if it was for the kind term benefit of the country, and we are back to square one.

Nope. One, I'm not a loser, and even if I was it would just be because I got a bad hand in life, that's all.

Given that they have no choice in the matter and will likely remain ignorant of the true nature of reality for the rest of their lives.

The fact that I'm fated to feel sad for them eases the feeling though, I mean it's not up to me after all.

What's your basis for pulling these choices? Wicca recognizes water, earth, air, and fire, and Chinese tradition follows the same, thought with metal added.

Fire, Water, Air, Earth is Greek, and probably even older than that. The other four are "cousins" to the first four.

Fire to Lightning since they can contribute to the generation of the other and have high heats.
Water to Ice for obvious reasons.
Air to Holy since Aether (upper air) calls to mind Heaven, or at least a path towards it.
Earth to Darkness for the reverse reason as above and towards Hell/Hades.

All of that I just made up obviously though.

I've been thinking about this a lot lately and it dawned on me that my element is definitely Ice.

I'm sharp and clear minded, yet people often see me as "cold" because of this. I can freeze people in their tracks with a single look (I try to keep this to a minimum since it only really works once or twice on any given person, kinda like a Geass). I'm tougher than I look because of my crystalline will. I also hate the heat. There is a notable amount of Darkness and Lightning in my personality, but Ice is the dominate one for sure.

Anyways I was going to put an Other option, but knowing this place I would just get a bunch of joke posts, so you'll have to pick from those ones up there.

At least I'm not very good at any of those things and I'm tired of trying to do it myself. I have money though, so I figure I can just get someone to do it for me.

A maid would be easier and faster to find than a girl willing to do those things for me but the cost would probably be higher in the long run. Then again, a girl friend would expect me to like talk to her and stuff which would get annoying since I'm a solitary person, a maid would be much more impersonal. I wonder if maids go shopping for their masters these days though, I feel like a normal girl would be better at that, but there's no guarantee, I mean it's not like all woman are good at cooking/cleaning/shopping it would be sexist to say something like that.

And what do you think about somebody who carries a sword around in a sword-free zone? What is an appropriate punishment?

In most areas that would fall under knife laws regarding maximum length which from what I understand is considered pretty serious. That being said, I'm no judge, I have no idea what is appropriate since it's all arbitrary in the first place.

Not just in my head. You think any country in the world has enough policemen, prosecutors etc, to prevent, investigate and prosecute every crime that occurs there?

Of course not, but does that mean it's acceptable to break "minor" laws? No. If a cop is chasing a guy who just killed someone and he comes across a guy with a broken tail light, he should prioritize the crime that will net the larger punishment, but that doesn't mean the second guy isn't in the wrong too.

Jaywalkers should be fined/imprisoned based on what their local laws stipulate, as should any criminal.

And going 1 mph above the speed limit means jailtime?

Not necessarily, but they should be punished with a ticket at the very least.

Also it isn't that jaywalker or illegal immigrants are good or bad, it doesn't matter, the only thing that does is if they broke a law or not.

And then you have people who do know they may have broken the law, want a path to citizenship or renewing a visa, but feel they have nowhere to turn to since they fear making things worse by drawing attention to their immigration status.

Utterly irrelevant.

Because it's a complex, nuanced issue. There are a wide variety of reasons why somebody might become an illegal immigrant. Too many of the "but they broke the law" arguments imply some sort of malicious intent and serve to demonize these people and lump them all together with the legitimately bad ones.

It's as simple as a thing could be. They broke the law. People who break the law should be punished. End of story. I'm implying nothing about intent because it's irrelevant to the issue, as is why they felt the need to break our laws.

Regardless of if ones thinks the current laws are fair or whatever, I don't see how one could argue that people breaking the law shouldn't be arrested, do they think we should all be able to pick and choose to follow only the laws that we like or something? I mean I don't really care, but it's genuinely confusing to see politicians and other influential people take such a ridiculous stance.

Say there's a guy who is tired of getting his drinks stolen out of his company's refrigerator, and one day he puts something poisonous, or otherwise unpleasant, in a drink that he clearly marks as his own with a warning not for anyone else to drink it, and say someone steals it anyways and poisons themselves, would the guy be held accountable? I mean if he put a big warning on the bottle I wouldn't think there'd be much that could be done to him, you know?
