Also note: White going first means it typically has the "initiative." White has the ability to make moves that dictate the flow of the game to a certain extent. It's just one 'tempo' though in an equal position, so White's advantage is sometimes summarized to "half a pawn" or 0.5 points.

Grandmasters do not just play memorized moves until they run out of memory and lose. There is a metagame to this, actually. You want the full point to do better in the tournament, and you're aware that rote opening play leads to equalized positions, so you must decide how to throw off your opponent. Choosing a less theoretical variation, deciding the right time or right way to surprise them.

And often, well studied openings do lead to positions considered equal, but you may be way more comfortable than your opponent. Very rarely do they lead to a clearly DRAWN game rather than an equal or slight advantage to white game, and by no means do you have to take the game there if you don't want to. Grandmasters still think, lol.

There's WAAAAAAY too many branching paths. We could solve checkers because every piece has the same power and moves are extremely rigid.

When talking about solving chess we have to ask: how does a computer solve board games? Well, a crude possibility is mapping every sequence. But this can't be done with chess. Move 1 has 20 choices for White and another 20 for black. Which is 400 variations. On turn 1. And each of those variations will have way more potential moves on turn 2. Eg if you play any pawn that frees a bishop or the queen, now all of their spaces are factored into this. The number of moves becomes larger than the amount of atoms in the universe I'm pretty sure.

So the other way to solve is to assign point values. Winning a certain amount of material makes checkmate way easier, and mate itself you value at a billion points. Then you also help the computer see what squares are desirable to control, eg the center and long diagonals and half-open files.

This starts to get you somewhere, but still, the level of possibilities is astronomical with slight differences in square choice or even move order having profound impacts on the best strategy.

There was a PSAT passage a couple years ago that became a meme. It talked about how the volatile organic compounds and sugars in tomatoes don't increase in number if you breed bigger tomatoes, they just spread out more. So despite our industrially farmed tomatoes being larger, they have lost much of their flavor.

Now, sadly, I'm spoiled on the identities of each case's murderer, but despite that I've enjoyed unraveling the mysteries. Case 3 was definitely the best one so far. I never thought Gregory's last case would be so wacky, but it was at least a fittingly dense mystery.

Also, I'm extremely suspicious of the two kids mentioned. I mean, they casually mentioned that one disappeared permanently without doing anything to resolve that? It's gotta be Horace and Simon, somehow.

Well I didn't really like VRAINS so I'm kinda stuck in arc v era lol

I dunno, frankly I'm actually pretty bad at intuitively recognizing the flow of modern decks so I need something to at least spell out the basics, but I don't really engage with yugitubers besides people doing weird gimmicks

I also prefer archetypal theme over max utility to some extent, eg I got really bored of every deck without a normal summon running Magical Meltdown Invocation >_> I like decks where 70%+ of the cards show up through one keyword search

If you have fun playing the deck and it's in your budget and you have people to play with I think that's worth a buy

Part of the reqs/perks is to do overseas study... alternatively you can do an internship but overseas study sounds really cool.

But that's assuming travel is normalized again somewhat in 2021 when I'd go... I would like to go to Japan. I'd study Japanese more if I knew I could go. Things are so uncertain now obviously, I'd only go if COVID was effectively over.
