Yes, it is 2020. And yet, nearly half of all people (half of Republicans and a quarter of Democrats) still don't think I should be legally able to get married (as of last summer's Pew Research Attitudes on Same-Sex Marriage). And those people play in group sports leagues.

No, strangers are strangers, I'm not going to feel more comfortable around them just because they like to cross swords. It's such an arbitrary status that it has no binding nature to it. Similarly I don't go "That guy is white and male? we must have so much in common!", these things are not determinant of a persons character.

Liking the same sport is a more binding shared interest but that doesn't mean I like everybody who plays the same sport as me.

Maybe the group doesn't make a difference to you. If only that were true for everyone. The gays historically would prefer to associate with LGBT leagues, when the alternative is to risk literally being beat, shot, or lynched for their sexual preference or gender identity.

That's not even the crux of the issue. He clearly thinks that "protected class" means that it only protects minorities.

If you're fired because you're white, that's also a violation of title VII.

When the law says that an employer can't discriminate based on sex, race, color, or religion, it means those qualities are protected. If your employer fires you because you're Christian, Muslim, male, female, Black, White, Jewish, Arab, Hindu... that's illegal.

Whether the group is a majority or minority doesn't matter.

If someone is that off-base about a basic civil rights fact, they're too uninformed contribute anything of value to the discussion.

It's not equal, though. It's a protection for minority-groups, it doesn't offer protection to people discriminated against who are in the perceived "dominant" groups. And even when whites do someday become the third or fourth-largest minority, the law likely still won't protect them without a special ruling of some sort.

The Supreme Court ruled Monday that federal anti-discrimination laws protect gay and transgender employees, a major gay rights ruling written by one of the courts most conservative justices.

Justice Neil M. Gorsuch and Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr. joined the courts liberals in the 6 to 3 ruling. They said Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which prohibits discrimination because of sex, includes LGBTQ employees.

Agree completely. I don't have money to just waste on ingredients that I can just keep without any foreseeable plan to use them. If I'm buying stuff to make food, I'll make it within the day or two. I'm not made of money to just buy stuff and let it sit, and possibly spoil.

The federal government should only be dealing with keeping a national army abd making sure the states aren't breaking laws, that's all its meant for.

So yes, bombs are something they should be doing and not healthcare, or just about anything else they are doing, that should be up to the states

Why do you think this makes sense? We're a single cooperative country. States have different demographics, different cost of living, different tax revenue, different spending needs.

If one state brings in more tax revenue than it needs... and another state brings in less than it needs, but quality of life would increase with it, why doesn't it make sense to distribute that money to the state in need?

The alternative, assuming you let people change their state residence, is to require people to move in order to gain state benefits. This not only inefficient (it's more efficient to move money to a state in need, than it is to expect all the people to move)... It's a prohibitive barrier to entry for the people who would need it most.

Makes most sense to me to have most medications either be over the counter or by prescription with a reasonable copay for each monthly supply, under a single payer system. Combine that what at least a minimal UBI and you've solved medication pricing while preventing people from hording 'free meds.'

In order for 1%, 2%, or whole milk (3.25%) to be consistent, first all milkfat is separated.

Then, you have a big vat of skim.

Skim milk stops here.

Other milk has the appropriate amount of milkfat added back in.

Edit: here I'm describing this in a specific scientific context of modeling where two physical properties are combined to get one final edge value. Often weight is used alone without reference to length

I'm pretty certain the original article (which Rowling essentially laughed at) was the one being inclusive and using specific language.

The article was talking about how access to hygienic facilities and sanitary products continues despite the pandemic. This effects people who menstruate. The only inclusive and specific language to use here is "people who menstruate."

It would be incorrect to say "women" or "females" in this context. Not all women menstruate. Every if you want to be a trans-person denialist, not all people assigned female at birth menstruate. i.e. those who have not reached puberty, those in menopause, or those with amenorrhea.

JK was mocking the use of specific and intentional language. Her suggestion of saying "women" instead of "people who menstruate" was, at best, medically or scientifically exclusionary and inaccurate. At worst, she was intentionally casting aside transpersons from being part of the discussion.

I don't accrue vacation days. There's a flexible guideline that two weeks of fun time off, plus a week around December holidays. It's not tracked in any official way.

Sick days aren't a thing either. If I'm not well or have appointments, I just let my PI know and I take the day off. My yearly stipend is the same regardless of how much I'm off.
