I have no idea which of these two is a more favorable opponent for Cloud. It's looking likely that Samus is indirectly stronger, but I can't help thinking Mario is more likely to gather the troops in a close Ninty/Square slugfest.

Though I guess "rally the troops" may mean"porn rallies" these days, so Samus could be stronger in both respects!

Best surprise birthday/Christmas gift I can remember getting since... can't even say how long. I was pretty speechless when he gave it to me and was about to get mad at him for splurging so much, but I decided to keep my mouth shut and accept his wonderful generosity. Much better than the gift itself is knowing that he's successful enough now to do this for me in the first place - BUT THE GIFT ITSELF IS PRETTY DAMN GOOD.

Yeah, I'm not ready to write off that possibility. If we take Zelda as an example, it's not ridiculous to wonder if Link may have also received his biggest boost since 2004 (if not ever). Even ignoring BotW's popularity as a game, Link's own redesign was super popular, and marked the first time the character's look was notably changed since 2003.

I've made this point over and over, but I think it's folly to think of multway polls in such a binary way.

If Luigi/Boss/Ness is 43/43/14 in a 3way, that does not mean that a 1v1 between the two strong entrants begins at 43/43, with only Ness's 14% remaining to divvy up. It's an entirely different match. Anything can happen, including an easy Luigi win or a Big Boss win.

I'm willing to give Zelda the benefit of the doubt against Sonic and say that she underperformed slightly due to a bad picture mismatch. If she didn't - which suggests Snake might be a hair stronger indirectly and she just ripped some Nintendo support away from him - it suggests good things for her against Samus and possibly even Mario.

So expand my last post regarding Zelda a bit...

I think the matches she has coming up - Mario and then likely Samus - are the most interesting ones she can get. She's already faced Snake, Sonic, and two Square near-elites (and the results of those suggest she'd clobber Tifa, Sephiroth, Crono, and Mega Man). I'd rather see where she actually ranks among the A-Team Nintendo hierarchy than see a direct match against Cloud, though we could still plausibly see both.

There's a good likelihood she goes up against Mario and Samus directly, and if she loses to both, I'd say at that point the only question mark is Cloud. She loses to Link/Mario/Samus and beats everyone else (though Snake can give her a fight).

Samus is the heavy favorite (she was an underdog before the contest), but I still think it's premature to call it a 100% guarantee. Snake lost against Zelda, but she's received one of the biggest boosts ever and has shown her insane strength in every single match. Losing a 50/50 to Zelda, as Snake did, is shockingly no guarantee that he still can't go toe-to-toe with any Noble 9er apart from Link.

It's probably useful for telling how much of their popularity comes from Smash Bros. Samus doing disproportionally well there isn't surprising because she stood out in the Smash Bros roster imo. When I first touched the game at a friend's house I ended up picking Samus despite having no idea who she was because of her design lol

I'm trying to remember what made Samus particularly memorable. Link is Link, and Kirby was the "top tier" character for casual play, but Samus wasn't particularly good for casual or high-level play. I'm guessing she's doing well at least partially because Smash served as her introduction to many gamers.

I think we've forgotten that she may still be the biggest "Smash boost" character there is.

Zelda is already 2/2 against the Noble 9 in this contest. The Snake rematch really isn't interesting to me. Zelda/Cloud could be, but I'd actually rather see if the Nintendo SFF order has been shaken up even more than we've seen. I mean, she'll get her chance next round regardless, so we'll see if the crumples to a 60/40 or can actually make it interesting.

Also, I again reference Zelda's picture disadvantage, which is the first time she's had to deal with one all contest (and I think it's kinda severe considering it's a sprite many don't recognize against classic Sonic). She's doing quite well given the circumstance.

It would certainly be the more interesting match. Mario/Sonic would have been a HUGE match before 2002-2005 when it looked like Sonic actually had the chops to make it epic. Once Mario rolled through the 2005 bracket, it was over (and the disparity between them has probably just grown over time). I disagree with it even as a historical clash of 90s icons because it will immediately fall flat once Mario stabilizes at the 63ish percent we all figure he'll get.

Zelda/Samus is actually very interesting. Hell, Zelda/Mario too.

Zelda is, from what we've seen, essentially equal to Snake. If she holds 55% here despite a clear picture disadvantage (her first of the contest), then I don't think that's a result that needs to be "explained away." It's not a bad result at all. If Sonic can actually make it close, then yeah, time to go through the book of excuses.

Sonic's trying his all to save face. He's certainly looking better now than 15 minutes ago, though he's got a pretty big picture advantage, so pretty much any loss will be seen as sheer disrespect from Zelda.

In the other match, Mario is looking somewhat safe now, but no way will he approach 2005's 60% win. Good on Samus.

I think Mario is lower on the hierarchy now. It's a theory I've held for a while, but 10+ years ago, he was pretty much the sole face of the company (Pikachu being perhaps the lone exception). Mario was the only character they used when promoting things on a Nintendo-wide scale.

That isn't the case anymore. Nintendo has branched out and is using many of their formerly overlooked characters in their marketing. This was evident with projects like the "Year of Luigi" and with Mario's significantly lessened role in marketing Ultimate. He was hardly prominent in any of those trailers.

Cloud might have enough to get there despite dominant performances from Nintendo's big 3. There's a good chance he'll need to fight through both Samus and Mario to get there, though... and man, he'll have earned it if he can get through that murderer's row.

Link/LoZ has historically been one of the worst options to stop a rally (0-3 against them). He and OoT are probably the biggest test those rally entries have run up against, but they are also at absolutely their most determined when they face him.

Regarding this match... no matter how pathetic it sounds, this beatdown from my boy against one of my lesser liked characters is one of the best birthday gifts I could ever hope to receive. Thing of BEAUTY watching the Hyrule Hammer in good form, though for those who missed it, it's still incomparable to the old days when he'd put up EIGHTY ONE PERCENT against Yoshi.

If Link marches through this bracket in his sleep, which he is looking likely to do, I'd be in favor of retiring him completely from the next CB, save for the final bonus poll against the bracket champ (it doesn't even need to count for points, though it can). I also think we can have a much smaller tournament of champions by excluding only Mario, Samus, and Cloud - akin to 2005. Everyone else should be in the main bracket because they are clearly fair game, though I suppose the idea of Zelda being a top threat to win a contest might be unpalatable to many.
