3 to 5 games total

or I guess you could list a 3 games per console or per gen and why you would suggest them

but how would you introduce gaming, as it is, or its history, or both, to someone who was never into games?

I think SMB3 is needed, yes. Its kind of the first super iconic game with polish

I agree on FFX yeah. I think similarly I would include Gears of War 2, It was the first game I looked at like fuck this is beautiful

Detroit seems like something that would be cool to show it more as an art thing and just how advance games can be

I came in thinking Galaxy as the Mario game. It's currently the top-reviewed game of all time on Game Rankings, and sort of combines hardcore with casual play, and depending on what they like about it you can sort of take their next step in either direction.

If I were to show them an artsy narrative game I'd pick Life is Strange assuming I think they can handle the content.

Skyrim, World of Warcraft, Overwatch (though I hate it myself), a Mario game (probably Odyssey), and I'm not sure on #5.

I've started introducing my daughters to gaming.

Super Mario Bros is a good start. After all, that's where I started.

it depends. is this a person who you think is reasonably likely to immediately "get" games as a medium?

because my first thought was if you're talking about someone who has, like, gone their whole adult life without playing games because they're averse to platforming/combat/etc, then I'd start them with Life is Strange.

Also, Rhythm Heaven Fever.

for more traditional, maybe Final Fantasy X or Dragon Quest XI. And something like Galaxy or another 3D Mario game.

Actually stuff like Braid or Lumines could work too as simple puzzle games

Super Mario Bros, Pokemon RBY, Goldeneye 007, Super Smash Bros Brawl, and Mario Kart 8. A nice sampler of different genres. Then I'd recommend them other games based on their feedback.

Metroid Prime
Metal Gear Solid 3
Super Mario Odyssey
Breath of the Wild

I considered Skyrim but I never recommend Bethesda games unless the other person knows how to mod their games to avoid all of the issues Beth games have.

You need games with very simple controls.

Something like Skyrim or Witcher 3 is going to be very hard to play for someone not used to using controllers. My wife tried going from LEGO to Skyrim and just could not get the controls.

Btw, a LEGO game based on something they enjoy is a great starter if you are just trying to make them like playing games.

Bioshock
Journey
Life is Strange
Assassin's Creed II
Kirby's Return to Dreamland

Feel like that's a bit of a range of genres and emotional experiences (and obviously all games I care a lot about)

I'm going to assume this person at least knows what games are, so if I'm going to try and introduce them to gaming I don't think it should be with game that are 20-30 years old at this point

My #1 is still Super Mario Galaxy, for the reasons I mentioned earlier. From there, depending on their specific opinions on the game, I could go...

Ocarina of Time (hardcore)
Wii Sports (casual)
Life is Strange (artistic)

And then from there I'd probably throw an RPG at them, just to show them what that is like. Golden Sun is fairly simplistic and easy, and about medium length, so why not that.
