Ehh... that's fair. Although I think you're under-emphasizing the importance of "sabotage" in classification, since ANY classification algorithm that uses DL or NN would be susceptible to abuse. I was speaking more from experience where its getting harder to sell customers on ML as a solution because of stories like those, and if the money dries up so does the research in that area.

I just don't think your concern about "feminism in ML" is well founded. We have laws against certain types of discrimination in this country, so it makes sense that we don't give companies carte blanche to say "I'm not being discriminatory, the blind algorithm is!" for making decisions that we wouldn't let a human make.

I don't think it really applies to the detriment of Uber here. I'm just saying, if your takeaway from this is "See, I guess there isn't structural bias in our society" but if the reason women are working less is because of societal pressures to be the person who "gives up their career" to take care of children or if they are leaving the service because of sexual harassment by customers, that doesn't erase bias, it just means it isn't at the feet of a sexist boss.

The very last thing we need is "feminism in machine learning." ML is already on the verge of collapse (again) after like a 30 year hiatus. Having to weave politics into it will nuke it entirely for another few decades.

What are you talking about.

Machine learning is not on the verge of collapse.

A number of companies, but primarily google, have shown that through some simple tricks you can abuse the fundamental structure of neural networks to trick them into classifying things to whatever answer you want (among those it provides). It's a huge blow to ML because it touches on the foundation of the theory and casts serious doubts as to whether it can be "patched" or whether ML for classification is a dead end.

https://gizmodo.com/this-simple-sticker-can-trick-neural-networks-into-thin-1821735479

I think you're vastly oversimplifying the field to think that all or even most of machine learning is in image recognition or on data sets where such "sabotage" is a concern.

I don't think that Uber needs to change anything about their payment plan. As far as the company is concerned, the interesting question for them might be "Why do more women choose to stop driving for us?". My friend is a part-time Lyft driver, and if I were in her shoes, I definitely would have stopped driving based on how terrible some of her customers sound.

I think this does indicate something that's important to me especially with regards to blind algorithms or machine learning, which is that an algorithm is only as blind as the data that goes into it.

I'm not disagreeing with your general premise (chess has more depth than things listed in OP), but there are more than Shannon's number (~1.2*10^176) singleton 60 card MTG decks, let alone if we allow for other deck configurations. Even if you fix two decks, there are 10^163 ways for those decks to be ordered.

That doesn't mean there's more depth though, because we can make rough equivalences between decks, games, etc. and human tendencies that limits the space of actual play. Chess isn't deep because there are lots of possible sequences of moves. It's deep because of the topology of the sequences of moves: At any given time there are lots of LEGITIMATE choices available.

Eh, I suppose. Although I wouldn't say someone is rich or well off just because they can make out retirement accounts.

I'd define well off as not needing to invest into retirement funds to begin with.

I'm not saying it's rich. I'm just saying that starting your argument with "Look, after those things I don't have much money left" is already removing things that your average person doesn't have. While being more fiscally responsible than saying "Greens fees: _____", it's still not part of your cost of living.

Personally, I put well off below rich/wealthy, and I would say that any upper middle class/upper class person is well off.

This has more to do with expectations than reality though. You're in the 62ndish percentile of household income in Minneapolis from just one income. Like, I wouldn't call $72k a year rich by any means (or $66k in your case), but a majority of people in your city get by with more than $10k less.

I think part of the problem with people in this topic and the earlier one today is that:

1. Having (or being) a non-working spouse is a luxury.
2. Being able to max out your retirement contributions is a luxury.
etc.

These might be things that are personal goals for you and the second is advisable if you can manage it, but they are luxuries.

You're in the 90th percentile or higher for HOUSEHOLD income in Mississippi as an individual.

Well there's Bill Nye's "Sex Junk" episode where he argues that gender is on a spectrum. He actually goes beyond the binary which is critical in justifying things like gender neutral pronouns.

More fundamentally, in the countries where they're trying to get using the wrong pronoun listed as a hate crime, you need to prove "material harm" to justify its status as a crime and they suicide rate in the LGBT[A-Z]* community is used as evidence that words cause physical harm, and so intentionally using the wrong pronoun is tantamount to assault.

I don't think you understand the request. Your first example is someone giving scientific evidence for transgenderism. The second is about misgendering, which is distinctly different than "We should refer to everyone by gender neutral pronouns".

We're comparing this to someone trying to claim that Mendelian inheritance shows we should clean our room.

I stopped playing during TBC, so this is mostly motivated by my own experiences, but I think it has a lot to do with the pre-max level grind getting less interesting/quicker. That just means that anyone left behind by raiding at any point ends up having little to do in the game.

I tried out Vanilla WoW recently, and there's only so many times you can run some of those dungeons for pre-raid gear without actually wanting to commit to a raiding schedule.

The problem is you can also make the same "just because it feels right doesn't mean it is" argument against any argument for social change. When it comes to things like, say, gender neutral pronouns, the narrative is "It'll be good for everyone just trust us" and that argument holds as much objective weight as any other. The only evidence used in these cases is historical evidence, because it would be unethical to screw around with people just to test a hypothesis.

Sometimes historical evidence is all you have to work with, because it's impossible to test a hypothesis at all in society outside of letting it happen organically without making it happen and hoping it doesn't screw everything up.

But the people who push for gender neutral pronouns don't pretend like they are giving a scientific argument for it.
