The reason he got arrested was also kind of bullshit tbh.
The road was blocked of because there was an accident where SOMEONE DIED.

He then tried to drive on the shoulder to circumvent the traffic.

An officer attempted to step in front of his car. Instead of stopping to explain who he was/why he was trying to go around, he kept driving WITH THE COP ON HIS CAR.

That seems like a good reason to be detained, no?

I can't believe this place has be defending the decisions of police officers 2 days in a row.

https://www.espn.com/golf/story/_/id/40162983/scottie-scheffler-detained-police-prior-start-pga-championship

According to ESPN reporter Jeff Darlington, who witnessed the incident, Scheffler was trying to drive around the crash scene on a median. A police officer instructed Scheffler to stop, but Scheffler continued to drive about 10 to 20 yards toward the entrance.

At one point, an officer attached himself to the side of Scheffler's car. Scheffler stopped his car as he turned into the entrance of Valhalla Golf Club.

After about 20 to 30 seconds, Scheffler rolled down his window to talk to the officer. The officer grabbed Scheffler's arm to pull him out of the vehicle, according to Darlington. The officer reached inside the vehicle to open the door, and once Scheffler was pulled out, he was pushed against the car and placed in handcuffs.

I'm open to the possibility that the cops told the truth and I would like proof before I actually believe it. It's perfectly reasonable to have this position. Frankly after how often cops have been caught in lies it's a bit ridiculous to just believe them by default. They've long since lost that trust.
Compared to the thousands and thousands of tickets issued that the offender pleads guilty to, or pleads not guilty despite actually being guilty, but negotiates the infraction to something that wont put points on their license.

One word that best describes this movie: pretentious. It's basically the Juno of 1999, winning a bunch of awards and being lauded as one of the best movies ever made, but upon rewatch you realize how it was just a product of its time.

I don't know if pretentious is the right word, although you may be right.

Upon rewatch, like Juno, it's definitely a movie that thinks it's more "clever" than other movies.

I always said that about Gilmore Girls whenever I watched it.

Under the bill, if a person is arrested for protesting while masked, it would elevate the classification of a persons crime, either a misdemeanor or felony, to one class higher.

So, hes just outwardly saying the law is being made to dump extra charges on protesters they dont like.

It just seems silly to see someone then tail them for minutes then pull them over and expect them to actually know why they're being pulled over.
This is assuming thats what happened, as opposed to the officer having his lights on the whole time and the teen not noticing it was for him because he was on his phone.

Again, this is all speculation on all of our parts. And in reality, I doubt any of us will follow up on this story to ever find out what ends up happening

Who do you think the department gets their statement from? If they say the kid was being issued a ticket due to what he did on the road rather than the drive through then it's the cop who told the department that.

Exactly. And I'll reiterate, you do know that procedure for making a traffic stop isn't to pull the person over at the exact spot the violation takes place and to do it in an area where it is safe for the driver to pull over, right?

Like the statement said, the officer began the process in the road, and the driver then pulled into the drive through (again, assuming the RCMP statement is true). And the violation was given for using the phone on the road, not in the drive through.

Cops tackling the REAL serious crimes.

In 2022, 3,308 people were killed in motor vehicle crashes involving distracted drivers. Distracted driving accounts for one in every six deadly vehicle accidents.

Yes. I get that a kid pulling up the McDonald's app while in the drive through (assuming he's telling the truth and wasn't also using it while on the road) sounds like a silly thing for a cop to go on a "power trip" about, but let's not pretend that cell phone usage while driving isn't a major problem, or that there's at least a *slight* chance that kid was driving around on the app, placing his order as he was driving to the McDonalds, and that's what the officer observed and ultimately pulled him over for.

Sorry if this kid gets zero sympathy from me and it sounds very "bootlicker" of me to side with the cop, but a friend of my lost their grandfather to a car accident where the person that struck him was distracted by their cell phone.

bigblu89
05/16/24 10:06:42 AM

They fell off for one of two reasons, depending on who you vote for.

If you vote Republican, it's becasue Trump was SO tough on them for his four years, they're too afraid to come over anymore.

If you vote Democrat, they were never a problem in the US to begin with, and it was just redcap fear mongering.

Living on Long Island, there is still a pretty heavy gang problem in certain areas, so I feel like it's a mix of the two.

This was from only 3 months ago...

https://www.cbsnews.com/newyork/news/bloodhound-brims-gang-arrests-long-island/

The Bloods, Crips, Latin Kings and MS-13 gangs are still active on Long Island, but less so since the tragic murders of two teenage girls from Brentwood whose parents went to Capitol Hill in 2018 to raise awareness of the growing threat gangs pose to young innocent lives.

Undercovers based across Long Island are arresting alleged gangsters who are armed with machetes, baseball bats, clubs and axes as tools for drug trafficking, extortion, home invasions and robberies.

"We are committed to assist our state and local partners with apprehending the most violent individuals who commit the most violent crimes," U.S. Marshal Vincent DeMarco said.

And if the cop had said that was the moment he decided to ticket the kid I'd be a hell of a lot more sympathetic since that's actually provable based on what the kid themselves said, however that's not why the cop gave the ticket according to the cop.

The cop didn't say anything. All we have is the statement that was made by the department.

"RCMP can confirm that on May 13, 2024 the individual was observed driving a vehicle on a public roadway while using a cellphone. A Combined Traffic Services Saskatchewan RCMP officer initiated a traffic stop with the individual. The individual then pulled in the McDonalds parking lot, where the traffic violation was issued," the statement said.

But if the statement is true, that's exactly what happened. Whether or not the teen was or was not using his phone prior to pulling into the drive thru is something the cop will now have to prove in court, should the teen plea not guilty (assuming the process in Canada is the same as the US).

The procedures of pulling an individual over for a traffic violation vary, but it's usually not a situation like you see in the movies where an officer will turn his lights the second he sees someone make a violation. They'll usually follow the vehicle and not turn their light on until they feel they're in an area where the person can safely pull over. This could have been one of those situations, as there really isn't a ton of information about exactly what happened.

Whether the stop was initiated on the road, like the RCMP statement claims, or if the officer's lights weren't turned on until the teen was in the drive-thru, that will be proven by dash cam footage, assuming they have it.

I know we live in an ACAB society, especially here on CE, but "That cop is an asshole for giving someone a ticket for doing something that is illegal" is a wild take for the majority to have.

If you were in the drive through and that same kid rear ended you becasue he was on his phone and idle rolled into you bumper, I'm sure you'd be all "Well, the code does time out, so I understand. I wouldn't want you to lose your free meal, after all."

On one hand, this sounds like corporate BS, but on the other hand, not selling items in places that know it won't sell, and (fuck 'em becasue they shouldn't want their business anyway, but I digress) know it will cause you to lose customers, does seem like a sound business decision.

It does kinda suck though that large companies that actually CAN make a difference choose not to just becasue the bottom line may get an insignificant dent in it.
