And Sony says PS5 is in the second half of its life cycle. Kinda feels like we're not gonna see the "true potential" of the PS5 until halfway through the PS6's life cycle lol

I honestly don't see the point beyond faster loading times. Those 4-5 games temporarily exclusive to PS5 aren't going to get me to spend 500$. Might as well simply save that and invest in a decent PC at this point.

As long as the games keep coming that is all that matters to the vast majority of gamers out there.

Like you got those PC gamers that will go on and on about how consoles will become irrelevant since more games are being ported over and how PCs are capable of doing so much more so convert to PC gaming yadda yadda, or PS5/series X owners will tell you how this game must be unplayable on previous gen consoles or the switch, but nah......none of this stuff matters. It never mattered, lol. Only the available games matter, and said games will be played with 10 second load times and frequent drops to sub 20 fps as long as the game is available, lol. Better believe PS4 owners hopped on that RE4 remake because fuck it its available.

Hell I truly believe had the PS2 been getting most of the major releases (besides the sports titles it was getting for years I mean) all the way into like 2011 people would have keep gaming on that.

It was unavailable for too long. People lost interest.

Half the appeal of consoles is multiplayer and if nobody else has a certain console there's much less incentive for you to upgrade.

PS5 is basically only going to become must-buy with GTA 6 lol.

I've held off on getting a couple of games that are available on ps4 just to be able to justify my eventual ps5 purchase. Since I do want to play games like gow 2 and sm 2, I thought might as well wait for ps5 "pro" before I get the new console.

Plus I still have like, a couple more games on ps4. Might as well completely finish my backlog so I can shelve ps4. Running out of room after all.

Tbh don't know what features a Pro version of the PS5 will benefit from when the software being made now isn't even close to fully taking advantage of the OG PS5.

Nintendo gets a lot of flack for making underpowered consoles but at least we get a few years of them taking advantage of every aspect of their specs.

The only way I can see a PS5 pro being a very appealing option/leaning more into "must have" territory is if 1. You just get guaranteed 4K 60fps with every single game and then certain games get patched to have 120fps options, and 2. That thing for whatever reason has a PS1+PS2+PS3 built into it, and also with the ability to download previous psp and vita purchases to play on it. Number 1 is kind of pointless at the moment because like you said the PS5 already handles the vast majority of games "good enough" as is and there isn't too many games that is pushing this hardware like that since we still got a generous amount of cross gen PS4/xbox one/switch stuff. Having a lot of 8K stuff is no time soon since even 4K isn't too widely adopted yet with consumers so thats out.....still a lot of people chilling with their old 1080p TV setups.

Number 2......that actually might have people going crazy to get their hands on one (mainly to scalp that sucker), but I doubt sony has it in them to pull this one off.

Sony will never support true backwards compatibility for PS1-3 at this point. I also don't think we'll see 8K for like 4 or 5 more gens if it ever even happens. We've had 8K+ cameras for years and the film industry has shown no interest in delivering in 8K. Great for post production tho.

Its outpacing the PS4 sales so I dont see what the deal is. Those 117 million units sold from the PS4 didnt happen overnight and PS5 is at 60 mill+ with less than 4 years. Will probably get a boost when price drops. Now I can agree there isnt that much incentive to get new gen consoles.

been a loyal playstation owner since the PS1 and i have exactly zero interest in a PS5. Sony sold me a PS4 with Bloodborne, but there haven't been any exclusives compelling enough to justify a $500 console.

Im in the same boat. Except my backlog could easily take me to the PS6 release.

Lots of PS4s belong to their second owners now that the original owner has a PS5.

You know what though?.........I tend to look at the positives when it comes to older consoles, or the more under powered ones like switch sticking around for this long.

Sure, there isn't nowhere near the amount of those "graphical set-piece" like games that is all the rage like they were throughout the previous generations. Those "must have" games that makes people want to buy the newest thing like right the hell now to play this very talked about game.

But....

Game budgets have been getting out of hand for awhile now. Companies put so much money into these type of AAA blockbusters that even if they still sell well on paper they won't make the budget back. It is time this kind of thing is dialed back a bit, and can be seen as a good thing that many releases are still shared with the PS4, xbox one, and/or the switch. Having these old consoles around this long helps recoup costs, and another thing.......bigger budget games being so expensive=risk taking with original ideas and video game concepts from "the bigger guys" (the capcoms, bandai-namcos, the activision-blizzards, etc. etc.) becomes that much rarer. It can get boring at times when the companies with the most money just constantly want to play it safe. Usually we have to depend on indie games for the most originality these days, but it wouldn't hurt to get some of these bigger guys out of their comfort zone and take risks too like they did in the past. (Seriously, something like viewtiful joe probably wouldn't have been attempted in the modern day like it was on the gamecube and then PS2 back then. PS1 games were known to be pretty cheap to make, and so that console hada game library by the ass-load).

It also works out for performance reasons.....older consoles being around=better performance for the PS5/xbox series X and S gamers and easier to reach benchmarks for the PC gamers. Older console users still get to play majority of the latest games since they deal with the performance they get and just like being able to play the recent talked about game in general, those using the latest gen consoles can get the smoother performance and prettier looking light beams. PC gamers get that much more juice out of older CPUs and GPUs since these games are meant to run on the lowest common denominator. Everyone theoretically benefits in the end, imo anyway.

They sent me one of those invites to purchase one from them directly a few years ago, so I thought why not? I got to play the Demon's Souls remake, at least. Plus, as someone who barely games on PC, the improved performance/visuals was a bigger deal for me. But even with that and a small handful of other exclusives, it was totally not necessary.

Yeah it was pretty much entirely a quality of life purchase.

Although I'd say the overall experience is indeed a significant upgrade from the PS4

Part of the problem was nobody being able to get one easily until only the last year or so.

I probably would have bought one in 2020 if I had a chance, but because of supply chain problems, I just stopped caring entirely about consoles.

I've had my PS4 6 and a half years and I still play it all the time, don't see any reason to get a PS5 just to be able to play a few more games and have slightly better load times.

I think itw because of Covid. Covid stunted this generation right when it was starting. And it just never really recovered. I bet if we could see a timeline where Covid never happened, this generation of xbox and playstation would look very different

Part of it is that there's no point in a 2% graphics improvement. Part of it is that people gave up when it had supply issues for however the hell long it had supply issues (maybe still does? I don't even know). Part of it is exclusives are (finally) becoming a thing of the past.

The gimmick triggers sound kinda cool but that's about it.

i guarantee you'll get 90% suggestions that are just ps4 games
and the other 10% will be ps3 or older games

Back when the 3 came out they had it right but did the revision. I had money in hand ready to buy the OG 60gb. It got pulled and couldn't find one. I bought a 360 and never looked back.

You mean the console that has done very well, and has mostly been dunked on for bad joycons and having inferior specs? The same specs that many players don't actually care about much past their word as seen by the fact that half the Sony fanbase hasn't bothered to upgrade theirs?

I'm thinking Nintendo actually lucked out by ending up with lower specs due to their hybrid thing. Because clearly diminishing returns is actually a thing in the gamers' market. As well as having actual good games you can't get elsewhere and such of course.

Covid screwed over development hard and probably slowed it down from getting any true killer app titles for a while since most of the big releases were on both PS4 and PS5 for a few years

Also the supply issues with the chip shortage not helping things

and the cost of living increases also kind of screw it over as well since people will have alot less disposable income
