This one has to be my favorite lol.

I'd say the issue isn't so much generating revenue as it is the ludicrously-high costs that are currently being covered by investors.

I expect it to burst at some point (or at least some major players will lose investment and go bust), but it absolutely does and can make money. Investment is getting to the point where a burst would probably destroy major tech companies, and the US government, no matter who is in, can't allow that to happen.

Plus white collar industries love being able to lay most of their employees off for moderately worse and somewhat cheaper options. It has so many uses that, even if it's shit, people will find some kind of novelty from it, or niche use cases where they can squeeze some value out. There are thousands of slop apps which are getting hundreds of thousands or millions of users monthly without having to do the bulk of the work expected from app makers just five years back, and that makes a shitton in ad revenue. It's an advertiser's dream - it makes generic slop which is built specifically to be as appealing as possible to as many people as possible, without needing (much) human oversight or pay.

And honestly, it's just kind of useful for people who don't know how to use a search browser, or have poor language skills (particularly English). That goes for the majority of the population of developed countries too, because the education systems in the most populous countries is still dogshit.

LLMs are close to being universal translators for pretty much every language that's relevant to advertisers. India has a massively growing middle class and with an education system that pushes English above all other Western languages, no chance AI is going away, it makes literally billions of customers easier to access.

Was on my way to get food and NPR was airing an interview where the interviewee's main point was basically "chat gpt is an embarrassment and every word out of AI companies' mouths is bullshit or worse". The interviewer seemed completely flabbergasted the entire time. Might have been among the most satisfying 15 minutes of my life.

I can only hope this is a sign of things changing and fully expect to be disappointed.
