The thing about SMB3 having no bad levels is honestly true - I was thinking about doing a ranking of every SMB3 level and the candidates for the bottom ranking aren't even bad, they're just sort of boring/not executed in a very exciting way (5-7 and 6-F1 are examples that come to mind)

It's the Herlock Sholmes show! That's... basically it. I kinda like the cramped nature of this mystery being in one tiny little corridor on a boat, and again, it's great development for both Ryunosuke and Susato and a good way to introduce them to each other. But yeah, it's really the Herlock Sholmes show, and... well, honestly, he alone does kind of make this case worth it, imo? It has TWO dances of deduction! Kinda like divination seances, those always provide major added value because they're just so good. Even though this case has no trial segments and the murder is, frankly, stupid, I feel I can't justify giving this worse than a 5/10 because of the interactions of the main cast alone. Both Susato and Sholmes are in peak form in their debuts (yeah I know Susato is in the first case but not really).

GAAC is a weird game in general for me in that the game feels greater than the sum of its parts - like, the overall presentation, the character animations, etc are just of a completely different class compared to every other AA game and that's a big part of the game's appeal, but none of either game's cases make it into my top ten based on their actual content (one of them is my #11 case but still).

Mega Man 3 is such a weird game. It clearly has bigger polish problems than the games surrounding it, but the fundamentals of the game are just so strong that it doesn't even matter a lot of the time. It could have been a GOAT game if a few of the remaining issues were ironed out.

It's a really solid intro case that loses a point for me for the fact that the final act, with the whole plate swapping thing, is one of the worst segments ever. I knew what happened immediately and thought it was going to take one contradiction to point out but no, we had to bring the witnesses back in and everything for it and it just got interminable. Up to that point it was a solid 7/10! But no.

Other than that, like, this case is remarkably good up until then imo, sincerely bordering on "best case in the game" material. Like, the murder mystery is pretty cool and has some interesting tricks, Jezaille Brett is a fun villain, and Ryunosuke is SO MUCH FUN here and his development is great. Ryunosuke really makes the first game.

Out of all the things about an Ace Attorney case that can be good or bad, the quality of that case's specific cast has probably the closest correlation to whether or not I like a case. There's a few exceptions but yeah. Like, G1-4 also has a terrible cast and I hate that case lol, but Soseki did grow on me a bit so it's not the worst.

I wonder if people will retroactively become more okay with this if we ever get AA7
It's possible I'll soften on this case slightly in the future. I don't think anything will ever stop it from being the most forgettable case in the series, and the fact that it's the most forgettable case in the series WHILE ALSO BEING THE MOST RECENT is its greatest sin, so maybe when it fades into the background more it'll be less of a big deal - but honestly, no, this case genuinely has my least favorite cast in the series, so I think it's always going to be at or near the bottom

I just realized that the current top 5 cases are the SAME as my top 5, and #6-10 are the SAME as my #6-10! Not in exactly the same order, but EXTREMELY close. It's not that much of a shock that the cases I think are the best are also the ones that everyone else thinks is the best (and my own votes do affect the outcomes) but I didn't expect THAT level of uniformity. I do think this'll change when we get to G2-3 and G2-5 though (my #11 and #13 favorite cases respectively, yeah GAA sadly just missed cracking my top 10 as a duology)

12 Miltank
7 Clawitzer

-7 Farigiraf
-9 Kleavor

21 Talonflame
7 Heliolisk
3 Salazzle
2 Marshadow
0 Bronzong
-14 Quaquaval
-20 Lileep
-26 Foongus
-37 Probopass

Star of the Day: Lumineon
Oh sure, it got eliminated, but it managed to not take last place or even second to last place! (Nothing had a performance today that I find notable. Okay fine whatever give it to Garchomp)

Dud of the Day: Farigiraf

Piplup had no negative votes btw, yay.

That's it for round 1! Honestly, round 1 is easily my favorite round, so I'm sad that it's over, especially since I think all of my remaining favorites will probably eat shit in the next round. I'll miss filling out these +/- ballots for everyone!

1/10

The more I think about this case the more it pisses me off, lol. It's a very strong contender with 4-4 and G1-4 for my least favorite case in the series. It's especially disappointing given that the previous game's DLC case was a 10/10 for me, and the previous case in this game was a 10/10 - they just couldn't be further apart in my rankings. Literally two of my top 4 there and then one of my bottom 3.

It just feels like it was written by amateurs. The cast is so terrible and flat that it's completely unworthy of the series. Ellen Wyatt, Sorin Sprocket, and Pierce Nichody all probably make my bottom 10 AA characters list - each one of them is a complete black hole of charisma in a way that's frankly shocking. Larry's return is also depressing - he hasn't changed a bit, in a bad way. He's only become more flanderized since the way he was in AA1. At the beginning of the case I thought maybe he actually found someone he liked who liked him back, good for him! Instead he's just more insane than ever. I hate Larry in this case, and I've never hated him before. It sucks.

The murder is mindnumbingly boring and forgettable. They were really trying to make the 'time travel' twist work but they had to force it super hard with the whole two ceremonies thing - I GUESS this could have been an interesting idea but it just... wasn't? It's super convoluted and doesn't really make sense as a way to trick Sorin at the end of the day. The airship could have been a cool location for a murder I guess but it's somehow not interesting and the steampunk vibes of this case are just bizarre.

The only redeeming quality of this case WOULD be the return of Maya as the sidekick and Edgeworth as the prosecutor but it's honestly just depressing. Like, THIS is what they returned for? This godawful, boring case? Again, it's unworthy of them. Edgeworth has never been the prosecutor of a more boring, lower-stakes case. Maya feels like she's just tagging along here for old time's sake. There's a real sense of the death of the series here, for me - like, oh, we're just reminiscing about how things used to be, but they can't go back to being that way anymore. Everyone feels old here. It's such a depressing vibe after the rest of the game ACTUALLY revives the old magic of the series. I hate it.

The more I rant about this case the more I realize it's easily my least favorite! Every other bad case has some redeeming quality to it that I really like. This has nothing. It just makes me sad.

Mega Man 5 has always been the definitive Mega Man of the 4-6 trilogy to me. It plays incredibly smoothly, the music is some of the best in the series, and the level designs are just top notch - all of this stuff is markedly better than in 4 or 6 imo. Every time I play MM5 it feels fresh all over again. I think it might be the most polished and well designed Mega Man ever - it really feels like they knew what they were doing at every step in the process after making four of these things. Just an incredibly fun and accessible game. I think it's a little too easy, especially the bosses, but that's a fairly minor complaint.

My favorite fun fact about Super Mario Bros 2 is that is ACTUALLY DID begin its development as a Mario sequel before getting reskinned to Doki Doki Panic and then reskinned back into a Mario game. So instead of "did you know SMB2 was originally a game called Doki Doki Panic?" it's actually "did you know Doki Doki Panic was originally a Mario game?"
